this is a blog for sports. i follow a lot of sports and a lot of leagues, and i am always in one season or another. I don't watch teams that aren't listed here unless their play will affect my team in the standings, and even then, it's more following the results. my ask is open. we talk about a lot of pwhl but you can ask about any of my sports. sometimes i will watch the end of close games not involving my team for fun

i *think* expansion teams can sign players on their entl and players not on their entl but this is their last chance for those on the entl

Interesting that during this phase expansion teams can sign 3 players but they have to be on their ENTL. Detroit and Hamilton may be able to sign someone but it seemed like San Jose and Las Vegas had trouble getting 5 from their list so I'm not sure how they'd get anyone else.

I don’t think this is true. Based on my read of the manual, if an expansion team wants to sign a free agent who is on the entl, it has to be done now, and it cannot be done at a later date. I don’t think all the free agents that expansion teams sign in this phase have to be on entls

I am going off the document. I have not watched the video.

I am choosing to believe that the red sox are in their 2025 dallas wings era (and that we will get baseball in 2027)

the fact that we won the cup definitely made people more willing to move. we would have lost gosling even if we lost but i don't think we would have lost ambrose and maybe even scamurra.

It does feel like teams mostly put signed players on their entl’s unless players out of contract specifically told them they’d be interested in a move

i mean that's how it works in a perfect world. it's just unfortunate that players on some teams were more willing to bend than others

This is interesting. No one offered Lee Stecklein anything worth 80k at all? Feels like there was a missed opportunity from the expansion teams to “play the game” so the depth goes unprotected through phase 3.

If they did, it wasn’t reported as an FPO

honestly i think minnesota veterans (and vancouver) basically got together within their front offices and said we don’t want to leave unless they force our hand.

And i’m sure intermediate parties were informed and it cooled off the process, especially when there are players who were willing to leave

PWHL awards: who's winning what in your opinion

(For those of you who are newer to sports, here is a reminder that league awards are for the regular season only, and that votes are typically tabulated before the first playoff game so that playoff performance has no impact on voting.)

FORWARD OF THE YEAR

Will win: Kelley Pannek led the league in goals and points.

Should win: Although her counting stats aren't as impressive, the Charge won when Brianne Jenner scored and lost when she didn't!

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

Will win: "Defender of the Year," in any league, always ends up becoming the "which goalie recorded the most points" award, and this year that was Megan Keller. Jaques may end up taking this one if Keller and Winn split the vote, however, as she led the Goldeneyes in points.

Should win: Lee Stecklein, who wasn't even nominated. Justice for stay-at-home defenders.

GOALIE OF THE YEAR

Will win: Flip a coin and it'll be either ARD or Frankel. I would love to see the voting margins on this one.

Should win: Frankel, probably. Eight shutouts is insane, and she stole a good number of 1-0 wins for her team. (Gwyn is goalie of the year in my heart.)

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Will win: Haley Winn. She was given top-pair minutes on a playoff team and looked like a veteran.

Should win: Casey O'Brien. I'm not elaborating on this one.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Will win: Kori Cheverie. Although this is a rgular-season award, she led the Victoire to a top seed, and Montreal had an eye-popping .844 win % at home.

Should win: I'd be happy with any of these finalists. Carla has the feel-good story of coaching through cancer treatments, and Sparre showed up and got shit done.

BILLIE JEAN KING MVP AWARD

Will win: Whichever goaltender takes home that award. Sorry, Pannek.

Should win: As I mentioned above, Frankel stole a lot of wins for her team. I'm a staunch textualist when it comes to "MVP" as a concept. I think it's possible to be the best player in a league without being the most valuable (e.g. Mike Trout leading MLB in Wins Above Replacement the year the Angels finished fourth place in their division). The Fleet would have been fucked with anyone else in net.

#i have to go with ard GOTY and mvp because we had 2 shootout wins entirely on her back [abstreiter had one as well]#and we don't get first place without those- they help us win the tiebreaker but if we lose either shootout we don't even tie boston #and if we don't tie boston we get ottawa and we're out in round 1 again or we beat ottawa and lose to boston in the finals #and those shootouts were won 1-0 and 2-1 #so it's not like the skaters were giving ard any margin of error #and we can say shootouts don't count re “pure hockey” but ard's GAA and sv% are better and she had more wins in fewer games #also even as a mtl i might give coty to kris... i think he definitely did more with less in the regular season

Unless they really backload Harvey's contract she's not signing for more than one year if they don't give her 90k. She's already top 2 defender in the world and Kaltounkova was definitely not that when it came to forwards.

so they'll do the fillier thing.... sign for a year and hold her rights so they can sign her for a longer contract with more money when they have that kind of flexibility

maschmeyer and vanisova only have a year left and honestly we don't know what the rest of these contracts look like. we only have information for last year.
