okay the weird thing about Children's Show Defenders is that they're always appealing to "complex" or "deep" themes handled by their favorite show and you look inside and you see kind of shallow themes treated in a not particularly complex way. Like there's this aura of seriousness that's supposed to be produced by Having Themes which basically boils down to "Can this be interpreted as having the Right Position on some object of contemporary political discourse?"

I enjoyed watching Bluey with my niece and nephews. It's a very cute show and there's a lot to like. Someone that age probably could get a lot from those themes. But I just feel those themes are not complex or interesting when you're thirty; it's just kind of sweet. It's good and fine to take pleasure in something being kind of sweet. But at a certain point you need to be serious and understand you're not having encounters with profound and serious art and there's something you're fundamentally missing by not rounding out your diet with something at an adult speed.

People do this with Avatar: The Last Air Bender a lot. And yes, I loved that show a lot as a kid and I still rather like it. But I wouldn't say it's particularly complex. "Oh, it tackles complex adult themes like fascism." Well, does it? Does it do this in a particularly complex or insightful way? Not really! And that's fine. It's a kid's show. It's geared to kid complexity.

I’ve been trying to put my finger on why Hades being depicted as a villain is so annoying in other media but works so well in Hadestown, and I think I’ve figured out why: Hadestown Hades isn’t the bad guy because he’s the god of the DEAD; instead, he’s the bad guy because he’s the god of WEALTH. Usually, whenever Hades appears in a movie or video game, he has some stupid motivation like “ughh I’m tired of being lord of the underworld I wanna be lord of everything” or “I’m the Greek mythology version of the western concept of Satan, fear me!!” but Hadestown really said screw that and made his motivation “I love my wife so much but we have a shitty marriage arrangement and her long absence combined with my severe self-doubt has lead me down the hellish road to corruption by all the riches under the ground.”
