So yesterday, I took a break from code and decided to spend much of it with Sam going over the plot. Our goal was to finalize the endings, and outline the first level in excruciating detail…including diagrams of what the levels should look like. They aren’t yet done, but the schematics are drawn out, and just waiting for placement of the set-pieces, a term described in the guide I used to design the level on paper. It was extremely helpful and the designs came out, if I do say so myself, pretty darn awesome for a first sketch. 

Today, I’ll be redoing them with more attention to scale this time. I’ll probably do as the tutorial does, make each small square the equivalent of 2x2 in-game squares. We have 100x100 sized squares. What will likely happen before deciding the exact size of each square is that we’ll use placeholders to program the art in, and test how long it takes at our current game speed for the character to walk around in it. It may be that we need to make the scale larger, or that there are just too many or too few squares for this to make sense given the allotted time scheme we wanted this level to take up, approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

I blocked out some things so it doesn’t get too spoilers, but some bits from our first set of sketches on level 1!

Just to point out something from some readers’ reaction to the fact that Go Get a Roomie has a majority of white characters (which is absolutely true): 

Like I said in the last post, part of it has to come from my own circle of family and friends (probably 90% white), but mostly from me creating a good chunk of the characters years ago when I wasn’t fully conscious about certain representations. Most of them happened to be created as a “default” white people (including myself at the time) unconsciously went for. Which is darn silly (and harmful!), but thankfully medias (and myself) are starting to learn what diversity really means, and how much enriching it is to include it in your creations!

The way I know I have changed in this matter is looking at my other webcomic, Headless Bliss.

(note that this webcomic is mainly set in a fantasy world where skin colors can go from green to blue-ish white)

Created one year ago, but pondered on for years before it first appeared online, the characters went through different designs before reaching their “final forms”. And only one remained peach-skinned… the one that happens to be a story from the human world (which now that I think about it, is beautifully ironic).

Annùn’s design went for an Indian feel to her character, which I am so glad I changed. Now that she’s been growing in the comic for a year, I couldn’t imagine her otherwise. It’s part of her, and for the better.

The twins are designed to be of South American indigenous descent (father’s side). Even though everything human-related isn’t what this fantasy comic is about (or perhaps, it’s *all* it’s about?), the fact that they’re based in another setting than most white&western culture adds a richness to the characters I couldn’t have brought out otherwise if I had instead made them as white as my queer butt.

The other main character would be Diov, but she’s just an evil demon queen who thinks she’s sassy. The fact that she’s whiter than white (to a blue-ish hue), is far from being any form of political stab however. It’s rather her inner wish to be “pure”.  (readers will know it’s not the case)

 (though it is still enjoyable to have a villain being all white than all black)

The real sassiness Diov wishes she could rival comes from Mama Josie. A secondary character that I have come to love a bit too fast, and we haven’t seen her nearly as much as I’d like.

So there you go. Instead of working on tomorrow’s Headless Bliss update like I should be, I wanted to do a little recap on characters’ ethnicity, and how I deeply appreciate diversity in all its forms (not just sexualities), the more I learn to include it in my own comics. 

If you’re a white artist, or know of one, and you feel they could go more diverse, give them time and encouragement (not hate!). Believe me, once they get a taste of how enriching it is to include characters from various backgrounds and tastes and thoughts, they’ll never go back :)

(And don’t forget we’re all humans, and mistakes happen. If you find that someone has written a character in an offensive way, they might not be aware of it and simply needs explaining. Heck if I haven’t made (and still do) mistakes in my comics!! It’s all about learning and growing in an accepting and open-minded way.)
