"I've come to ask for your discernment." "Is that so?" "Do not look so pleased."
Eloise Bridgerton & Theo Sharpe | BRIDGERTON (2020 -)
Also, as an aside, I side-eye the anti-Theloise crowd who act like the idea that a woman might care for someone enough to give up privilege and glamour for a man who is kind to her and whom she likes is absolutely unthinkable… meanwhile, it’s totally understandable—and romantic—when Benedict does it for Sophie.
I’ve long grown suspicious of the side of historical romance enjoyers who seem to delight in finding new ways to say and imply and enforce this idea that women are only allowed to marry within their class—and that if they go outside of it, they must marry up. Or, if they marry down, then that man must still be wealthy, own land, and be “worthy” of her.
Fuck the poor. Fuck the thoughtful. Fuck the nice to her. Fuck the being delighted by her. Fuck the respecting her upon meeting her. Eloise needs a man who will make her struggle to become worthy of his respect. Eloise needs a man will force her to grow into a shape she never wanted to be in because the growth she has been capable of on her own is unimportant because it comes unattached to the dick of the most boring guy you’ve ever read about. Eloise needs to fall out of love with feminist scholars because the idea that she could ever join them, become their peer, or become anything like them is apparently stupid.
Eloise needs a man whose idea of supporting her is ignoring her when he isn’t sleeping with her and allowing her to do things like read and study. Don’t you know! There are some men who don’t let their wives do that. Really this is the best-case scenario for her and you should all stop complaining about it. (Do you hear Eloise complaining about it anymore? Don't worry all that bite has been trained out of her. It's hard to dig one's teeth into the hand that's drowning you when they've stolen them.)
People will call Eloise self-centered and egotistical, but for me the first word that comes to mind when I think of her is loyal. She is just completely loyal to her family. I'm not saying she isn't flawled, but every time I see people talking about how she only thinks of herself and is not a girl's girl, and all the bullshit anti-Eloise propaganda people love to spread I'm like "Please! Are we watching the same show? Are we watching the same character?" She is completely devoted to that family, just because she doesn't share the same interests as them doesn't mean she only care about herself. That's why it warms my heart watching the cast react to the show and hear Luke say this:
Because that's who Eloise is. She is witty, and opinioned, and out spoken, but she's also a good sister, she cares, and she tries to connect with them. She is always reaching out, she is always sacrificing her own interests to keep them safe and happy. She abandoned her search for knowledge in season 2 because she didn't want her association with "political radicals" to stain the reputation of her family. She always puts her family first, even over friends she loves very much. Her not wanting to discuss balls, dinner organization, suitors, and the placement of cutlery or whatever else women were expected to care about in that time does not make her a bad sister. Her having different interests than her sisters does not make her a bad sister.
Yes, sometimes she hyperfocus on something and is blinded to other people's struggles, but that doesn't make her egotistical or a horrible person. She is capable of sympathizing with others, and she always sincerely apologizes and tries to do amends when she realizes or thinks she wronged someone or was inconsiderate of something. She might sometimes dismiss "girly" things, but that's not because she hates women, that's because this type of thing is shoved down her throat all the fucking time and she just doesn't enjoy it. I will never understand or subscribe to the Eloise hate. She's such an endearing and charming character. She's so funny and decided, and true to herself. I swear, Eloise Bridgerton, they could never make me hate you!

Bridgerton Season 4 (2026) Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
Update: Cressida is back and I am living.
I'm torn on what I want for season 5 of Bridgerton. On one hand, I think we need another season before Francesca's. We need time for both her and Micheala to grieve (and yearn), and I feel like having their season fall only a year after John died would damage their relationship writing wise, and ruin the beautiful relationships they had with him in season 4. Don't get me wrong, I am desperate for Fran and Micheala's story- I just want it to be done right. (Also, sapphic yearning)
On the other hand, I am so so so worried that they are going to commit grave crimes against my beloved Eloise. I don't necessarily mind the idea of her falling in love, but between what I know about her book and how the show has treated her, I am terrified that they are going to commit character assignation.
BRIDGERTON 4.06 – The Passing Winter
gotta hate how they needed to have an arc of eloise "maturing" and accepting marriage had "good aspects" as if her entire complaint with it wasn't that it's COMPULSORY and it's a flaw in the system and there's basically no guarantee that you end up with someone who's nice to you. that even if your husband is nice to you, you're still his property.
marriage isnt exactly equivalent to love and even in universe love matches are established as rare. eloise wasn't against love, she was against an institution that treated women as breeders and property. but sure go off i guess. the only character that seemed to understand the structural problems within their fucked up society has now been humbled. we must rejoice.

what if it was their plan from day 0, to make eloise this "angry feminist without any power with just big words and no action" and then tire her out, break her spirit, isolate her, just to tame her into being an emotional and sexual support to an awful man who would rather fuck peas
absolutely diabolical
Everything went to shit when they changed the showrunner 😭
Any clip of Eloise in Bridgerton: I do not want to be courted by some lord. I don’t really like children and I have a traumatic association with childbirth. I feel suffocated in the ton and bored out of my mind in the country. Polite society is exhausting and I want to make my own way in the world.
The comments every single time: OMGGGG JUST WAIT FOR PLANT DADDY 🤤🌳🌱 YOU’RE GONNA LOVE RAISING HIS KIDS AWAY FROM EVERYONE YOU’VE EVER LOVED!!!ELOISE DOESNT REALIZE YET THAT ALL SHE NEEDS IS FOR HER LITERAL WORST NIGHTMARE TO HAPPEN AND THEN SHE’LL LOOOOVVVVVVEEEE BEING A PERFECT LITTLE STEPFORD WIFE
i can't properly articulate this right now, but phillip crane could be the sweetest, most understanding and intellectually interesting man on earth, and it would still be a defeat.
"but what if they truly love each other- " no. eloise would still be conforming to those rules she was rightfully seeking to escape.
no matter how unconventional - not too much, obviously - they would try to make their relationship, how supportive phillip would be of her intellectual pursuits. in the end, eloise would still become the wife to a lord from the ton, conforming the way society has always wanted her to.
it would turn out eloise didn't actually know what she wanted, she just had to 'find the right gentleman' who would Allow Her to study and talk as much as she likes, safe within the limits of the golden cage that had always suffcated her - but that, really, she just had to learn to love.
i cannot overstate how much this is, like, the opposite of whatever girls supporting girls stuff bridgerton claims to be about.
Eloise, get behind me, these trad wives are trying to kill you
Whenever people try to justify the show's treatment of Eloise through "choice feminism", it's a failure of an argument for three reasons. First one, choice feminism is garbage. Second, Eloise is a fictional character without freewill and incapable of making choices. Third, because the arc the show is sending her down doesn't even respect women's choics.
So many people go on about how Eloise's arc is about "respecting women's choices" and yet the narrative makes it clear that Eloise's choices are not to be respected. All the while she is penalised for not respecting her sisters' "choices" to be wives and mothers (roles that they were groomed for since birth), the narrative is making it loud and clear that Eloise's own choices, not to marry, not to have children, not to conform to convention, to have the ability to have the experiences her brothers take for granted, are signs of her immaturity, which she most grow out of, faults and grievances cured by the miracle of "love".
The narrative then isn't supporting women's right to choose. It's about supporting women's right to choose to get married, settle down and have children. That is the only choice the female leads in Bridgerton are allowed to make.
Of course, women should not be forced into doing those things, they should choose it! But at the same time, they really should choose it.
