Impulse

Gar spared a second to rub at his nose as Bart zipped off to the kitchen. He glared at the spot where the speedster had stood, then padded off towards his bedroom. The three minute timer was more because the underground base was huge, he was in street clothes instead of a biosuit, which prevented him from shifting. So he was stuck walking the entire way.

Gar had needed the entire three minutes, but when he finally got back to the sofa Bart had not disappointed. Green eyes darted across the spread, which way more than what he’d asked for. Gar whistled appreciatively “Not baaaad. What’s with the bananas?” Gar flopped down on the sofa and draped the blanket over him. He pulled out his phone, which he’d long since programmed to sync with the TV, and flicked on the movie. A green hand patted the seat beside him.

“Perfect timing, the helicopters are just hitting the island.”

The speedster is already perched onto the couch comfortably with a bag of chips open and on his lap. No surprise that he couldn’t wait for Gar to get here before digging into some of this. Patience was still and never will be one of his strong suits. He tilts his head when he spots the other in the room again and smiles widely at him. “What, you don’t like bananas? I figure they could be good as dessert, I guess.” A shrug if given before he moves from his spot over to sit himself right against Gar, playing the bag of chips to the side.

“Awesome! Oh wait -- the lights!”

Bart jumps up again and darts over to where the light switch is, flipping it off before leaping back onto the couch and beneath the blanket. His arm hooks nonchalantly around Gar’s from beneath it as his free hand moves in for a few chips to munch on. This was the perfect way for them to spend the night. “How many times have you seen this one?” He casually asks as he watches the helicopters and bends his knees while huddling closer. A firm, but quick kiss is planted right on Gar’s cheek suddenly. Like a quiet thanks for getting the blanket and everything else.

That was a lot easier than Gar had expected it to be. Who knew speedsters got excited over dinosaur movies? He filed that little tidbit away in the back of his mind. The question caused him to reach down and fiddle his phone free from his jeans pocket. A couple of swipes later.

“Looks like the first movie started about 10 minutes ago. So if we hurry we can tune in just in time to get to the park and skip all the boring character introductions.” The suggestion of grabbing a blanket because it got cold got an arched eyebrow in response. Gar always ran warm and he’d never heard anyone suggest that the rec room got cold. Still he shrugged against Bart’s legs.

“Team effort then–you hit up the kitchen. Popcorn, sodas, chips, and any candy you can find. You can do that in the time it takes me to go grab a blanket. Meet here in 3 minutes?” Gar was already moving to sit up.

Maybe it was just an excuse to cuddle up closer without it being as awkward, but a blanket just seemed like a good idea for a movie time. He furrows his brows and gives a sheepish grin to Gar’s response before nodding. “Alright, yeah... Not a fan of the very beginning slow stuff anyway. It won’t take long to get everything ready though.” Bart chuckles and waits for the other to sit up and off of his lap finally before sliding off of the couch.

“Snacks. Lots of snacks. Three minutes is an exaggeration, but yeah. Meet you back here.”

He playfully flicks at the end of Gar’s nose and is gone before he can retaliate or fuss about it. Bart arrives inside the kitchen in seconds and he squints around at the pantry and cabinets as he mentally goes through what they needed. “Chips, pizza bites, popcorn, sodas andddd... yeah, why not.” He moves to grab the bananas and set them on the counter before moving to fetch the rest of the food. It takes two trips to and back from the other room, but soon enough everything is set out on the coffee table for them. “There!”

When his cheeks were squished, Gar flicked his head to the side, attempting to nip at the attacking fingers. He reached behind his head to pull out the comic Bart had been reading. Fingering through a few pages, he folded it and set it aside.

“It’s your obligation because no one’s better equipped to handle it. You’re the guy for the job.” Gar grinned as he turned over the options. “Food does sound good. We could grab something to eat and find a good movie to watch. Apparently they’re playing a marathon of those Jurassic Park movies to celebrate that new one that came out out. That could be fun.”

And full of terrible raptor sounds…

The little nipping of teeth is easily avoided with his quick jerk away from Gar’s mouth. He snickers and leans back as he releases him altogether despite wanting to keep his face stuck that way. At least they had the place to themselves -- they could do whatever they wanted. “I guess you’re right. I am pretty damn good at entertaining.” He nods and glances around the room briefly before perking up at the mention of Jurassic Park.

“Oh wow, really!? Yeah, we gotta watch that together. I only seen the first one, actually. What times does this marathon start?” When it comes to making snacks, it was probably going to be more than just popcorn. Between the both of them a lot of food could be put away. “We’ll get a blanket too. It gets kind of cold in here when the lights go off.”

A smile forms when Bart informs him that he won’t brag much too much when he sees Wally next.

“Good. He’s trying his best – and that’s what matters most.”

He pauses to rub the back of his neck.

“Uh – I don’t know about going on a mission, but I probably should go patrol the cities a bit. Would you like to join me?”

It easily brings a smile to Bart’s own face when he sees the other’s, but he would simply nod in agreement to the words. Trying really was important and he had to give it to Wally for trying harder all the time to keep up. Still doesn’t make it any less amusing when he gets grumpy about being slow, though.

He tilts his head curiously as he waits for an answer and moves to the other side of the older Speedster as he peers at him. The hopefulness in his face is all too painfully apparent here. The kid was almost vibrating in excitement at just the thought of doing any missions with him. “Patrol? I can do patrol, yes! That would be sooo awesome! Just the two of us.” Bart grins and bounces on his feet a little.

Gar dropped his head into Bart's lap, folding his arms behind his head as he looked up at his speedster pillow. "The entire Team is out, so it's now your duty to entertain me by any means necessary. This is your mission, whether or not you choose to accept it, actually."

Bart jerks in surprise when his lap is suddenly filled with Gar’s head, easily covering up the comic book he had been reading. “Heey-- Oh yeah? Why is this my obligation, exactly?” He smirks down at him and suddenly moves both hands down to squish Gar’s cheeks together, snickering at the amusing fish lips. “Anything you feel like doing? A movie, games... I’ll let you borrow my comic? Oh, we could eat snacks. That is always a good plan.”

Well, okay. He hadn’t really expected Bart to agree with the cute thing. The comment was mostly a fake boast, something to ease his nerves over the conversation. Instead, here he was, staring across at Bart trying to decide if he was being made fun of or complimented. Not that he knew how he’d react in either situation.

This was uncharted territory.

“It is hard to believe,” Gar decided, eyes crossing to glare at the finger that poked at his nose. He tried his best to flick his tongue out and lick it, but it retreated too fast. Maybe it was a little bit weird to try to lick the guy you’re talking about kissing with, but Bart had been his friend for so long now that it was hard to break years worth of comfort just for one awkward conversation. “You’re the kind of guy kids in school love, dude. Outgoing, you’re funny, and you–”

Annnnnd you just suggested that we kiss. Gar finished in his head, blinking in surprise. His instinct was to assume Bart was screwing with him, but the way the speedster stumbled with it and tried to recover with a quick ‘I don’t know’ made him reconsider. Green eyes studied Bart for several seconds while he struggled to decide how he wanted to handle this.

The silence held for several seconds before he finally shrugged, seeming to make up his mind. It was his idea after all–he’d brought kissing up in the first place. Fine, he could see how far Bart would go with it before backing down. A game of chicken. It was easier to think of it as a game anyways. Gar scooted closer and leaned in, studying Bart’s face as it inched nearer and nearer. Game though it may be right now, the shape-shifter’s heart was still hammering in his chest.

This was the dumbest idea ever, he realized, but now he was too close to back down. His nose brushed the side of Bart’s, but Gar came to a stop there, just close enough to share breath with the speedster. This was a strategy too; playing off Bart’s impatience. The ball was in the speedster’s court. Would he cave and go for it or back away? And it wasn’t too late to back away and laugh this off. They could go about their lives as if this conversation never happened. He was going to say that much, but his mouth had other ideas.

“If we kiss now, you’re still not off the hook for having to do what I tell you to–juuuust sayin’.”

The compliments that Gar gave him easily brought a smile to Bart’s face, because he rarely hears anything like that from others. He did have some friends in school, but they can barely keep up with him. Not many people can, though.”You think I’m all those things? I mean, you’re awesome yourself and super funny! I’m sure you’d be out-going if you could go out more.” Gar is no doubt one of his favorite friends to hang out with and there’s rarely a dull moment when they’re together.

Bart wasn’t sure if his suggestion was too forward or unwanted by the other’s facial expression, but what’s been said has been said. No taking that back now. He offers a sheepish smile when Gar stares at him in silence, feeling this wave of tension and anxiety roll over them like a thick blanket. His own heart seemed to speed up in his chest when Gar scoots up closer to him suddenly and that distance is further removed. He didn’t realize just how nervous he was until they were really damn close.

Of course, he was not the type to back down during a challenge and this is definitely a challenge. He shifts a little and leans on one of his hands as his foot begins to tap the side of the bed in his expected impatience. Bart swallows and lifts his eyes from Gar’s lips to squint at him. “Yeah, yeah... I know. Shut up.” That being the last thing he says before he takes a deep breath in and leans in to close off the space between them; free hand gripping for his friend’s shirt as he unceremoniously smashes their lips together in a kiss.

Barry rolls his eyes but smiles at Bart’s cockiness.

“Yeah, Wally can make vortexes too. It took him a little longer than it took me for him to learn though.”

Bart just seems to beam with more excitement at Barry’s words and he releases a snicker. “Really? That’s awesome! I’ll try not to brag too much when I see him.” He knew that his cousin already gets annoyed at him super easily, so he rather not increase it if he can help it.

“So, are you up to anything fun? Like, a mission or something? I could help out!”
