The Weird Kid by redditor Benny2485
Darren was a little weird, but I didnāt realize how weird until it was too late. He came to our school at the beginning of fourth grade. The minute I met him, I knew he was going to have it tough in school. He always wore a suit to school. He would often be found dancing as he walked. And he loved quoting old movies, like Casablanca. Seeing as most fourth graders had never seen the films he liked to quote, he would often be met with confused stares and muffled laughter. Nobody wanted anything to do with him, for obvious reasons. But, thanks to my mom, I ended up getting to know him better than I ever wanted to. āYouāre going to go have a playdate with him after school. I already set it up with his father,ā my mom, the school secretary, told me. āNo mom,ā I groaned. āHeās weird!ā āHeās lonely, he has no friends. And honestly, his parents arenāt around a lot, when I spoke with his father on the phone he told me they are very busy with work. So please Ben, just go hang out with him after school. He lives just a few blocks from here, you can walk home with him and Iāll pick you up after my meeting tonight? Okay?ā There wasnāt much I could do to get out of it. In retrospect, I wish I had tried something. Anything. I walked home with Darren after school. The whole way he would randomly break out into dance and start quoting some movie I had never heard of. āDo you like sparkling cider?ā he asked me as we neared his house. āUmm, not really,ā I said. āMore for me then!ā he laughed as he skipped the rest of the way. The house was immaculately clean. Not a speck of dust could be seen. As I stepped into the front living room, I noticed an elderly woman asleep on a chair, a breathing machine was attached to her face. āThis lovely specimen is my grandmother, isnāt she gorgeous?!ā he said, petting her head. I waved awkwardly. āFollow me, Iāll get us a snack!ā he said as he skipped into the kitchen. As I walked past the grandmother, I noticed some metal bands wrapped around her wrists. As I stepped closer, Darren came out of the kitchen. āHey,ā he said, his voice sounded deep. āWhat are you doing?ā āNothing!ā I yelped. āJust, uhā¦ā āAdmiring her beauty? Of course, who wouldnāt! Now come on silly pants!ā he laughed. We sat at the dinner table as he handed me a small plate of lady fingers. At the time, I had no idea what they were and their name sounded less than appealing, so I passed. āMore for me!ā he laughed again. After he ate, he gave me a tour of his house. Every single room was as clean as the last. It was almostā¦too clean. āWould you like to meet my father?ā Darren asked. āIā¦uh, sure,ā I said. Darren took me to the end of a long hallway and opened the door at the end. It was a large office with fancy furniture. āFather dear, Iām home,ā Darren said, skipping to the office chair which was turned away from us. Darren reached over and hugged his father. āFather, this is my friend, Benjamin,ā Darren said, pushing the chair around. Seated in the chair was aā¦mannequin, dressed in a suit. āSay hi Benjamin,ā Darren said, his voice sounding deep again. āHi,ā I said nervously. āFather is very busy, he has to get back to work. Love you father!ā Darren said as he kissed the mannequin on the cheek. Darren led me out of the office and took me towards the garage. āNow we can meet mother,ā he said. He opened the garage door and standing near the washing machine was another mannequin. āOh mother! Itās me, your snooky poo!ā he laughed as he ran to the mannequin. He turned it around to face me. āIs she not the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?ā he asked. āIā¦uhh,ā I stammered. āDonāt be rude Benjamin,ā he said, his voice deep yet again. āYes, itā¦she is,ā I said. He hugged the mannequin and ran back towards me. āLetās go watch movies!ā he said, grabbing me by my arm. The next two hours were spent watching a black and white movie. Darren laughed hysterically through the whole thing as I sat on the far end of the couch, praying to God for time to go by faster. Finally, I heard the doorbell ring. I sprinted down the hall and threw the door open. āMom!ā I said, hugging her tightly. āYou okay?ā she asked. Darren appeared behind us, a creepy smile on his face. āIt was a true pleasure maām, having your son here. I hope that he can visit again,ā Darren smiled. āCertainly,ā my mom said. āAre your parents home? Iād love to meet them.ā āOh, sadly no. They are both at work. Arenāt they Benjamin?ā he said, his smile vanishing. āYes, they arenāt here,ā I said. āYou two havenāt been alone this whole time, have you?ā she asked. āNo, my dear sweet grandmother is here, sheās napping though, so we need to be quiet.ā āOf course,ā my mother smiled. āWell, Iāll see you at school tomorrow Darren.ā āYes, I look forward to it,ā he said, smiling. Sadly, that would not be the last time I would find myself in Darrenās house. "Okay...okay. Iām going to try to get this all out calmy. Iām at my Universityās library right now, and the atmosphere is...well, itās not helping me stay calm right now. Everyone is pretty much freaking out and some are openly Skyping with their parents right now, talking in frantic voices, trying to figure out how to get home before another snowstorm hits us. One mom is crying, she keeps saying the name of one of the dead girls. God, this is terrible. Please, somebody create a mirror of this just in case. I want there to be proof that this happened to me. I go to a University in the midwest. Iām honestly scared to say which specific one right because I donāt know who could be reading this. I probably shouldnāt have even said Iām at the library right right now, but it seems like the whole University is here so I think Iāll be okay. This morning, three girls were found dead, hanging from three different trees in our downtown about a hundred feet from each other. I actually saw the swarms of police, first responders, and onlookers as I rode past on our University cambus Now, normally I shouldnāt be on this six thirty am bus downtown, as I donāt have class until later and Iām not one for an early morning workout. However, this morning, like a couple of other mornings in the past few weeks, I was woken up by a nightmare. The other times, this nightmare was murky-I just knew I was running from something and I always woke up by the sounds of my screams in the dream. But this morning, it was clear. It started with me at my job at the local movie theater. Now, I spend a lot of time at this place so itās not entirely weird that Iām dreaming about it. We are playing a special showing of a horror movie, in honor of Valentineās Day for some twisted reason. This movie is chronicling the murder and torture of forty different University girls, all found dead-you guessed it-and hanging from a tree in the city. Then my dream cuts to me standing downtown, next to a University building Iām always at. Itās night. There are other small groups of college students standing around, and we are all scared because a body has just been found hanging from a tree. Some students band together to take the body down, and to take a video. Iām too scared to be apart of this boisterous group of students, and run into the building. I run up all the stairs until Iām at the top, until I hear a crashing noise. It sounds as if someone has entered the hallway, and they are mad. Theyāre fuming. The only identifying thing I can pick out is a high pitched male voice, his murmurs are piercing my ears, his quick breaths are surrounding me like a tornado. I quickly jumped into the closest, and while Iām in there I realize Iāve found the hiding spot of the murderer. As soon as this dawns on me, I get out my phone to text somebody for help, and thatās when Iām found by this murdering psycho, he's still bloody and smells absolutely rancid, and my screams start again. The last thing I saw in my dream was his jacket, that had braids of hair tapped onto it. Three braids. So I wake up. Itās four forty five. I do what I usually do in these situations-turn on all the lights in my apartment and get a knife out (I know itās ridiculous, but it makes me feel safer. Itās something I have always done when I wake up in the middle of the night). I make sure my door is locked. I browse Reddit. But thatās when the absolute freakiest thing happens-I hear someone trying to get into my apartment. The sounds rang out to me in my silent apartment, their body pressing against the door, shoulders knocking against it, the doorknob jingling, and sound of the lock being fiddled with. Part of the reason why I got a cat is so I could attribute strange night time noises to him, but this was unmistakable. Someone was trying to get into my apartment. I felt like those noises were speaking to me, kind of in the same way orchestra music or jazz seems to reveal its secrets to magicians. The shoulder against the door sound frustrated, the doorknob turning sounded like crying, the lockās jingling sounded like screaming. The footsteps walking away sounded determined and hateful. The noises didnāt last long though, and it seemed like whoever it was, they were trying to be covert. Still, I wasnāt able to fall back asleep and I definitely wasnāt able to get out of my bed until one of my roommates got up early to finish a paper. While they wrote, I took a shower, eager to leave the house and at least try to get some reading done since I was awake so early. Hence my early morning bus ride to my favorite coffee shop. But after I realized what was happening, I knew nothing about this day was going to be productive. Iāve been a mess ever since, too afraid to leave the library and presence of other students. The police have hardly released any information, just a harshly worded email telling students NOT TO WALK HOME ALONE. Which is what I usually doā¦.Iām considering spending the night here. I donāt know how my dream, the person trying to break in last night, and these murders, are connected, but I know that Iām not safe. Not at all. Please, please, please, someone save this so if something happens you can let the police know." how about calling her mother from her phone and watching her till she came to pick her up instead of picking up an unconscious girl throwing her in your car and driving to the āaddress you found in her phone (yet Iāve never in my life heard of someone keeping an address in their phone?)ā
also how about not making up stories for yikyak
Good point. I didnāt even realise this when I first read it, that taking her home is still kind of creepy.
Just like tumblr, someone goes out of their way to do something nice and gets bashed for it.
1. Anyone that thinks this person really did this needs to ask themselves how they found their address in their phone or why they were going through their phone in the first place with the intention of finding their address when.. No one saves their own address in their phone.. Especially not a female that spends her whole life going out of her way to not get followed
The only way they could have then found her address is to go through all of her text messages looking for a text where she may have given her address to a friend..
At this point.. Already fucking creepy
2. After doing all of that work, they then put a female into their car that did not know them..without their permission
3. Wouldnāt it have been way easier to search contacts for āmomā or ādadā and call them to pick her up?? Yes.
So 4. This story is either completely made up or
5. They were not being honest at all about their intentions for finding this poor girlās address and putting her into their car
Can I play devilās advocate here? The lock screen on my phone has my address and work phone number on it. This is in case I lose the phone somewhere - people canāt unlock it, but they can still contact me. Also, in my address book, the very first entry is mine and is labelled āMy Profileā and it also has my address and contact info.
Can we please not be so jaded to think that maybe, just maybe, something mostly good was done here?
But Joe⦠Youāre a male. A smart female does not put her address on the lock screen of her phone because she does not want someone that would be willing to steal a phone.. To also have her home address as well
Women and men treat these situations very differently because weāre raised in the defense mode our entire lives.
How about we all just be happy that someone did a nice thing instead of looking for something else to get upset about. Ā Holy crap, people. Ā Even after a guy stands up and does the right thing, someone has to call him out on his āintentions.ā Ā No good deed goes unpunishedā¦
you really missed the point didnāt you
This dude probably didnāt expect her mom to be home.
hello tumblr. i am the person who posted that yak 3 days ago after i went to a party with some friends. let me tell you what happened so you can stop spinning tales about what you believe happened, because all of you are honestly way out of the ballpark. leave it to tumblr to assume the worst and attack people for literally everything.
i had been at this place for about 2 hours or so. i usually donāt like going out, especially to parties, but my friend sam was going to be there and she told me that there was going to be some craft beer and locally-made cheese, stuff like that. she and i went to culinary school together, so weāre always talking about stuff like this. i agreed to go just for the food and shit.
anyway, sam and my other friend brian eventually had to leave because of home obligations, but i stuck around to watch a bunch of half-drunk people play sm4sh. eventually, the party began to break up and everyone was leaving. i was getting my coat from the hallway when i noticed this chick propped up against the wall in the bathroom. i went in there to check on her and she was mildly receptive to me. she mumbled a few things but i couldnāt tell what she was saying. i asked the owner of the house if he knew her, and he said no, but he said that she āwas always welcome to sleep upstairs after everyone was gone until she woke upā and that just didnāt sound right to me. i told him that iād drive her home and he just sort of laughed and made mild insinuations that iād be doing something else.Ā
i picked up her phone to see if i could call her mom first, before i decided to drive anywhere with her. her phone, like mine, isnāt passcoded. i donāt use a passcode on my phone because iām a lazy piece of shit. i donāt know why herās wasnāt either. i went through her contacts looking for āmomā or anything related to it, but i was unable to find her mom or any people in there with family-oriented titles. i guessed that her phone, like mine, was synced with her facebook, and all of her contacts had their facebook names instead of contact names. however, at the top, she had her own contact info, along with her address. i tried then searching for people with her last name, but pulled up nothing. i could then only assume that she didnāt have family, or that she was an only child with remarried parents. i didnāt know what to do then.
the house owner was looking a little irritated that i was still there, and again asked me if i wanted to take her upstairs, and i refused. feeling slightly worried for both her and myself, i just patted her face and asked her if i could drive her home. she just slurred and rolled her head to the side, and that was as good as i was going to get. i just wanted to get her out of there. i didnāt want to call the police and start something with the home owner; he was already getting pissy. her address was only about 20 minutes away from where i was at, so i carried her out to my car, put all my junk in the front seat and laid her in the back, putting my coat and stuff under her head in case she threw up.Ā
and i drove to her house. she didnāt wake up while i was driving. i parked in front of her house and knocked on the front door. her mom answered it right away; i could only assume that sheād been waiting up for her daughter.Ā
i then explained that her daughter had a little too much to drink and iād found her passed out in the bathroom. immediately her mother put a hand to her mouth and looked incredibly worried. i told her that everything was fine, and that her daughter was in my car resting in the backseat, and that i had brought her back because i didnāt feel comfortable leaving her at the house.
it was then that her mother started crying and she hugged me. she called me a precious young lady, which i didnāt even bother correcting because it really didnāt matter at that point, and we both helped her daughter inside. her mom tried to offer me money, which i refused, because i donāt see why i needed to be rewarded or anything. i just told her to make sure that her daughter was okay, and i drove home. no more, no less.

this is exactly what happens when people on tumblr see something good that happened. you guys assume that because an implored male posted that yak, that he immediately had wrong intentions about the situation. someone had the opportunity to take advantage of a girl, but instead he takes her home like any decent human should do, and then tumblr decides to dissect the entire thing piece by piece, and call him creepy for looking through her phone to find contacts or an address.
iām so fucking ashamed to be a part of a website that lives and breathes feminism and rights for women and speaking out against rape culture, and then you attack people that tried to get a girl home safe by looking through her phone and then driving her home because it wasnāt safe to leave her alone.
thank you, tumblr. thank you a lot

Oh but darling, donāt you see? Itās you, it has always been about you.
