Unpopular Opinion: People Frequently Completely Miss What’s Terrifying About Azula as An Antagonist
Azula can be mean, Azula can be cruel, Azula can be manipulative, Azula can be self-interested, Azula can make mean and biting comments. But’s she’s far from the only antagonist who can be all of those things, who does all of those things. Zuko can be all of those things, Mai can be all of those things, Ty Lee can be all of those things, Zhao can be all of those things, Ozai can be all of those things, Long Feng can be all of those things. Many of the minor antagonists we encounter can be all of those things.
What makes Azula unique, what makes her so terrifying as an antagonist, is her utter dedication and loyalty to the Fire Nation and her father, her willingness to kill and die for them, the fact she’ll do anything to fulfill her duty and accomplish her mission, no matter the cost to herself or others. At her worst, she’ll burn away everything and everyone, no matter how much she loves them, not for herself or her ambition, but for her duty and responsibility to an awful cause. This is what makes Azula unique among ATLA antagonists, and what makes her uniquely terrifying.
“My life I give to my country. With my hands I fight for Fire Lord Ozai and our forefathers before him. With my mind I seek ways to better my country. And with my feet may our March of Civilization continue.” -This is a terrifying oath, and Azula is the one who attempts to personify it.
Azula’s not scary because she’s mean or evil. She’s scary because every facet of her life is given over to the Fire Nation. At some point, it’s hard to tell who the actual Azula is and what the indoctrination is.
I’m glad someone brought this up because it’s an aspect of Azula that’s rarely discussed. Many might be confused by her actions in the comics, but what she does makes sense because, after years of indoctrination, she believes that an ideal ruler for the Fire Nation should embody the values she was taught: someone with control and power over others who also uses fear to keep them in check, that’s why she encouraged Ozai to take Azulon’s place and why un the comics she wants Zuko to become like Ozai.
While many argue that Zuko was also subjected to the same propaganda, it’s important to remember that he spent more time with Ursa and Iroh because Ozai dedicated his time to training Azula, whom he saw as his heir and, above all, as his best general in the future. Furthermore, Zuko was exiled from the Fire Nation, where he was not only shielded from the Fire Nation’s constant propaganda but also forced to live alongside other cultures that had fallen victim to the Fire Nation. Azula, on the other hand, didn’t experience this because she only went out on missions, dedicated to completing them, and immediately returned to the Fire Nation once they were finished.
Moreover, the reason Azula takes loyalty seriously is because loyalty (especially loyalty to her country) is one of the values she was taught. Therefore, she took Mai and Ty Lee’s betrayal very badly, it wasn’t just a betrayal that caused her to lose the control she had over them as friends, but by betraying her, the princess of the Fire Nation, they were also betraying the Fire Nation itself.
If we consider Ozai’s conversation with Azula before leaving to conquer the world, in which he entrusts her with the Fire Nation, it suggests they likely had similar conversations combined with Azula’s statement to Long Feng that power is innate, not acquired, it implies that she probably had conversations with Ozai where he emphasized that, as not only a talented firebender but also his heir and the princess of the Fire Nation, she bore a greater responsibility and commitment to the nation’s well-being than the average soldier, making her incapable of seeing herself outside of that role. It’s like Uncle Ben said in Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility,” but executed in an extreme and toxic way for the convenience of a war regime.
Azula is not just a girl who had toxic tendencies that were encouraged by her father and his inner circle and redirected those tendencies towards a political cause, but she is also something much more terrifying: a child soldier who gives everything for her country, a true patriot.
Let´s make this clear
-People that are NOT responsible for Azula´s breakdown
-People who ARE
It's kind of fascinating how Azulon is blamed, even though he died when Azula was young and never seems to have had much interaction with her, while Iroh is supposedly not responsible, even though he was evil overlord #2 until Azulon's death, and remains present in Azula's life (while blatantly playing favorites against her) long after that.
Same for Ursa. Whatever else, she seems to have been present in Azula's life much more than Azulon was, so absolving her completely of blame seems weird.
Anyways, (and this isn't a moralistic judgement at all), the person who is most clearly narratively responsible for Azula's breakdown is Zuko. Within the confines of the show's narrative, his agency and his actions are what most directly lead to it and which trigger it. Obviously he's not "solely responsible" or whatever but if it weren't for his actions it never would have taken place. He and Iroh also stand out as the only two characters who essentially wanted Azula's breakdown. They might not have precisely thought in terms of a mental breakdown, but they wanted Azula defeated, humiliated, and brought low.
People feel uncomfortable when Azula stares at them, as if the sun itself were staring at them, so she avoids staring at people, although she takes advantage of this with her enemies or incompetent subordinates.
Meanwhile, Mai and Ty Lee look at her like this:
People feel uncomfortable when Azula stares at them, as if the sun itself were staring at them, so she avoids staring at people, although she takes advantage of this with her enemies or incompetent subordinates.
I can buy that Azula loved Zuko in a very twisted, very broken, but very deep way and that she always sort of will, and I think that shows in the series well enough. I don't think Zuko ever really loved Azula in any way whatsoever and I don't think he ever will and I think that shows very clearly in the series and especially in the comics, I think he hates and blames her in a way that he can't even fully bring himself to do with Ozai.
I know Azula deeply loved both Ozai and Ursa. I know Zuko desperately, sincerely loved both Ozai and Ursa.
I know Ursa absolutely loved Zuko and I can sort of buy that she felt that she owed a bit of obligatory love to Azula but couldn't bring herself to feel much more positively than that for her daughter even if she had tried. I don't think Ozai ever loved Azula or Zuko or saw them as anything beyond tools.
That's the read I get on that family dynamic.

hey so that person who responded to your katara ask was kind of weird about how they approached you?? it was kind of aggressive. and i just wanted to say, as someone who knows how difficult translating from spanish to english is (even though i'm a native english speaker), your post didn't sound racist at all when i read it!
sorry you got interrogated. your english sounded fine. ❤️ have a great day!
Was it aggressive? I didn't feel that way. I think it was even great that he called me out on it; it's good that no one tolerates racism (even though it was never my intention).
I think it's because he doesn't know my way of expressing myself; maybe I didn't give him enough context in my post and that's why he thought that.
But thank you for caring! 💕
What do you think about maitara? (Mai x katara)
Personally, I don't like it, but I think it's because I only pair Katara with Aang or Azula. I don't think Katara is a character who looks good with everyone.
I don’t usually step in like this, but your post [in the public tags] doesn't feel right to just scroll past without asking for clarification.
I don’t want to assume what you meant, but the wording comes across as racist. Could you explain what you meant by Katara doesn’t look good with everyone? I’m hoping this might just be a language mix-up. Maybe you meant she doesn’t work well with everyone?
NOOOOOOO, I DIDN'T MEAN TO SOUND RACIST. 😭
I wanted to say that, for me, she doesn't look good with the others because the only pairings I like of her are Aang and Azula.
It must be because of the translation; I don't speak English and I use a translator to change it from Spanish to English.
I'm sorry if I sounded like that. :(
Ok. I can understand a mistranslation. That's why I asked for clarification. Did you mean it as in the ship doesn't work good in your opinion? This wasn't about Katara's physical self?
It's clearly not because of Katara's looks! I love her, she's my girl. 😭
Same goes for Mai! I can only imagine her with Azula and Ty Lee, I was just talking about my tastes.
I would never even think of mentioning anything racist, unless it was to criticize racists. I'm Latino, I know how it feels.

I’m going to ask something you might not have thought about in a while. How would your Leper Princess AU start off and where would it progress? Because I am getting massive “Kingdom of Heaven” vibes from the piece of art we have.
I based it on two AUs from that movie! One about Azula with tuberculosis and another about Azula as a leper.
I was thinking about the idea that Azula was born with leprosy, a disease that wiped out almost her entire family, which is why she starts ruling so young. Perhaps she begins experiencing symptoms at fourteen, so she has to rush to conquer the world before she dies so that her younger brother (Zuko is indeed younger here) won't have any trouble ruling.
Zuko would be lucky enough not to have leprosy (because Azula sent him away from the nation) so Azula began to prepare him to marry and be a good ruler, although none of her councilors liked him.
In the end, Azula dies at the age of twenty-four from her illness, after having completely conquered the world.
I really like Baldwin's elegant and majestic look in the film, so I think Azula would look like that to her people, someone powerful and beautiful, even with that horrible disease.
Headcanons of Alpha Azula being absolutely violent and tough but with her omega she becomes a puppy (maybe Omega!Katara)
Maybe later? I'm rusty at this.

Alright, Au question. Ty Lee doesn’t betray Azula at the boiling rock. How does Azula’s story change. Does she even have her breakdown? Does Tyzula happen?
I think Azula would still become somewhat paranoid, and I even think Ty Lee would become depressed by Mal's betrayal. Even so, I don't think Ty Lee is a character who can comfort anyone; she might not help Azula much, and might even make things worse by trying to get her to ignore her. I think they'll separate. Azula wouldn't be willing to let someone else betray her, so she'd send Ty Lee away, and Ty Lee would accept it because she'd feel uncomfortable and completely lost in the situation.
But don't mind me, I haven't seen the series in a long time, so I'm left with the expectations of my old ideas.
Would you ever want Azula to return to her family and reconcile with them?
Personally? No, I wouldn't want her to go back to her family. She has every right to cut ties with her family and go far away.
But, in her character it is shown that she is someone loyal to her family, so maybe they only talk through letters, but she would still stay away from them.
I like the found family trope, so that would be a good ending for Azula.
