Hanji was the Sun. Levi was the Moon.
(or Sorry I was in my levihan feels)
Stars burn to nonexistence, with an explosion as its last farewell.
And the sun will be no different.
Levi only wished that his sun burned for longer than it did.
You see, Hanji Zoe was that sun- with an effect on his life that's larger than any star and larger than life itself. Except, she didn't explode despite falling like a comet- much faster than Levi can comprehend because deep down, perhaps he didn't want to believe it...
The sun is bright- all stars are -they are bright. She can be too bright, too overbearing, too strong or too much and on those days, when he can't deal with her, he'd turn away- hiding from the heat, but she always finds him at the end of the day, once her brightness has dimmed down. Unfortunately, she can also be too dim on days where she's hidden in the safety of clouds made up of papers, chemicals and barely-touched dinners. It surprised him the first time he willingly looked for her...
How rare does one see a sky where the moon moves in chase of the sun?
He realizes now, that it's because he was cold.
The moon reflects from the sun, Levi -she had told him.
It reflects light, and Hanji's light is warmth. It is warmth and joy, life and change, it's an ear-splitting scream of excitement or a giddy battle-cry. It's an infectious happiness-
and an infectious sadness.
With only a hint of a frown, he knows if she's sad, mad, or disappointed. With only a second's-worth of emotion in her eyes, he could pin-point exactly what she's realized is wrong. Despite doing right, she would always believe that it had been her fault and it pains him that she thinks that way...
The planets revolve around the sun-
but the sun was never responsible for the planets' progression.
Venus ran too hot, Saturn grew its rings and Pluto moved too far away. It was never the sun's fault for the planets to become what they are. Venus was too hot from the very beginning, it was never meant to be a thriving planet in its environment. Saturn simply grew rings from every projectile that tried to come near it. And Pluto?
He could've been here for longer too, if they had more time.
Levi only wished that his sun burned stronger than she did.
What's worse- he knew she was struggling in the suffocating darkness.
but not the extent
Her light was dimmed, but never snuffed-out. Regardless, he failed to lead her in that darkness because the clouds were communication, distance, duties, responsibilities- and meetings with people of varying needs of the sun. Why?
The Military needed her for this, the Marleyans for that, the new recruits for this, the engineers for that, the tax-payers for this and so on. Why? Why must she hide behind these clouds during the dark of night?
There were no other stars to rely on-
the moon only reflects from the sun.
"Let me go" and so he did.
Every day the sun goes down to let the moon breathe, but they never ask-
Would the moon rise if there would be no sun to bring the morrow?
From where would the moon reflect?
There could be no night in the end of the world, there could only be darkness.
He studied under that sun- learning how to read and write in the way of those who dwelled above ground, casting aside the remnants of what can hardly be referred to as an Underground education. He grew for that sun- his tolerance, his understanding, his patience pulled taut until everlasting. He fought with that sun- trying techniques unique only to himself based off of her suggestions, like going for the ankle, how insane of an idea to risk getting flattened just to bring a titan down to size.
He loves that sun, in a way that he should've stopped squinting at her brightness long ago. He should've appreciated her warmth more, never turned her away, never dismissed her. And he should've tried harder to touch the sun- he could've hid her in an eclipse of that love.
The sun was tired.
And the moon was only able to watch.
For it had none of it's own light to give, and only its rocky exterior to share.
