For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. 

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. 

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. 

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever. 

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

hey taylor! you are absolutely killlling it on the reputation stadium tour and i am so proud of you✨ i wanted to show you my tour outfits! they are nothing tooo exciting; i just took some of the lyrics from reputation that mean the most to me and put them on tshirts! i can’t believe i will be seeing you SO SOON in august for 3 shows🎉 I will be attending both Toronto shows and… drum roll please….. I will also be at your show in Nashville!!! My dad and I have always wanted to do a road trip down there so we will be driving almost 16 hours from Canada🇨🇦 I will be attending the Nashville show by myself but man am I going to have the time of my life!

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to see you again😊 I started listening to you when I was just 9 years old and I’m 21 now which is so wild to me! i am mostly known as the Taylor Swift Girl and I wear the title proudly😎 you and your music have been one of my biggest supports for over a decade. i have struggled with mental illness for most of my life and you are the reason why i keep pushing through. each album release, concert, media event, etc. have been motivators to help me get through my dark times. you are the reason i found such an important escape in music and you inspired me to cope using my own guitar and song writing. i can honestly say i have no idea what i would do with you! although i still have a road of recovery, you give me hope. you mean the world to me and i really hope i can tell you in person some day💖 

 also, i met your mom at the 1989 tour in Toronto! she is the sweetest person and i am so happy i had the opportunity to talk to her! I’m not sure if she remembers, but I gave her a deck of cards and each had a reason why i love you on it (i know i’m sappy trash). although you have never noticed me on social media, you have brought me a happiness that no one can take away from me. i wouldn’t change anything about the past 12 years because i know it’s leading up to a moment that is going to be so special!
