Bada Bing! Wit' a Pipe! | Greg & Jimmy
Greg liked the kitchen, it was always quiet in the morning and there was always coffee and those cute pre-wrapped desserts and sometimes he would catch someone that was decent enough to talk to and have a nice morning away from his demonic employers with, so when he gets to the kitchen at half past 6 on a weekday morning, a few weeks into their strange blackout, he’s both excited and terrified to find that someone is already there. But when he realizes that it’s just the Mockingbird’s young cook-kid, he relaxes just a bit, not because it’s just the kid, but because there’s coffee and coffee makes everything better, really. And he’s still completely ecstatic that this kid can still somehow make the coffee machine work without electricity.
So he pours himself a cup and sips it cautiously, grimacing when it goes down scorching and too bitter. But he’s still too tired to open his mouth and ask for any cream or sugar so he stands there awkwardly for a few minutes, watching the kid finish up the dishes. And he grins when the kid turns around and gives him the most adorable angry-looking scowl that he’s ever seen. Someone really needed to inform the kid that he never looked menacing, ever, he looked like an annoyed stray kitten.Â
“No, not lost, not right now at least,” Greg says, sipping at the scalding coffee with a chuckle, “I’m trying to figure out if I’m awake enough for conversation. Oh well, hi, I’m Greg, it’s 7am, this coffee tastes like burnt tires and regret and I already burnt my tongue on it. I would really like some sugar if you could possibly spare some for a sad middle-aged man?”
He's just about to turn away and continue what he was doing when the man speaks, and it takes him a moment but he finally recalls a faint memory him from a few days ago. And what his luck that it's this guy that he has to deal with this early in the morning.Â
Jimmy scoffs and rolls his eyes, “Yea' I remember you, you were th' guy that ordered his eggs sunny side up a few weeks back 'n then got angry when the yolks weren’t cooked,” and Jimmy's not certain, but he's pretty sure the implied 'you're that idiot' was obvious enough. At least, it was enough for Greg to drop his eyes and chuckle into his coffee. "Also, Canadian bacon is different from sliced ham and it's not bacon and no I will not replace it if you're unhappy with what you ordered. It's in the fine print on the contract when you first book a room, right after the 'we are not liable if you drown'."Â
"Yeah, I'd been meaning to ask how people took their coffee around 'ere, it's always changing depending on who's staying and when. 'S hard to really know how to make it property when you don' drink it, you know," Jimmy says with a small shrug as he turns away from the man to open a cabinet behind him. He rummages around for a moment before he finds what he wants and slides the small packet-filled bowl across the countertop to where Greg stands, “I hope you don’t mind Equal. It’s all we 'ave right now and I don’t feel like going to find more right now. Um, you want something to eat?”
The food at the inn is terrible.
I hate this stupid island.
I think it's pretty good.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Look, if you stay away from my daughter, I’m sure we’ll have no problems.
Oh you're one of those fathers. Mhm, I know you guys well. And I'm not even interested in your daughter, mate, so don't worry.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Well, he is your boss. Sort of. Didn’t you just say that?
Well, yeah, but he didn't actually hire me so he really has no control over me, that's Lucy's job. He's more of a 'watch from a distance' kinda boss.Â

is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Good. Because I could tell my husband you were being rude.
You're going to go running to your husband because a kid was being rude to you? And what exactly could he do about that?Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Are you trying to be smart with me, Mr. Gates?
Not in the slightest.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
That better be the extent of it.
Well yes and no, sometimes she wants whipped cream with her hot chocolate. So you know, sentences.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Well, she is my daughter, and I do hope I raised her well. although I can’t say I’m thrilled that she’s talking to strangers. I’ll have to talk to her about that.
I'm not that strange, besides, you do trust me to cook your food. And it's not like we talk past, "hey would you coffee or hot chocolate?" "oh, hot chocolate please."Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
And are you saying my daughter is nice to talk to?
Nicer than most. I do have to deal with cranky old ladies and weird, preverted men on an almost daily basis so, yeah, she's nice to talk to. Wouldn't you say she's nice to talk to?Â

is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Yes, Amelia is a lovely girl. I didn’t know that you too had been acquainted.
Ah, well, not really. I've talked with most of the guests here, it's part of the job, but some are nicer to talk to than others.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
I don’t think so. Charlie’s mentioned you a few times. That’s all. He said there was a Jimmy who was about our daughter’s age.
Oooohh, yeah? We've only met a couple times. Your daughter, I think I've seen her around before, we've talked, she's a nice kid.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
Oh… You’re that Jimmy?
That Jimmy... um, should I be afraid?Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
[chuckles] Guilty as charged. How do you know Charlie?
He's my boss, sort of.Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
On the mainland. And I think my husband wants to get back more than I do.
The mainland, yeah, I figured that-- you're married? Aw that's nice, wait, you're not Charlie's husband are you?Â

is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
I… see. Well, it would be nice to get off this island and go home.
[nods] yeah, wouldn't it? And where's home for you?Â
is anyone up for stealing a ship and sailing with me back to the mainland?
I’m not sure if I’d like to go with you, Mr…
Gates. Jimmy, and I'm joking by the way. [seriously] He didn't have an accident, it was the war. No, ah, there's no fisherman. Well, I mean, I'm sure there's a fisherman, just the one I'm talking about isn't real.Â
