I'm fucking weeping rn
Portsmouth Sinfonia vibes and I’m loving every second of it
I love early music gigs because this one amazing poet had my trio play background music for one of his shows and the first thing he asked us was like “can you play…the butt music?”
And the worst thing was that we knew exactly what he was talking about and could, in fact, play the butt music
Some creative attempts at capturing birdsong in musical notation from F. Schuyler Mathews’s Field book of wild birds and their music (1921).
Regarding that last notation, the scream of the Great Horned Owl, the text has this description:
“When that note comes, one will think he hears the ‘crack o’ doom.’ If the Screech Owl’s note is weird, this is horrible; it has the sound of murder in it. No cat on a back-yard fence can produce a yell as hideous!”

Posting more ridiculousness! This is a piece I wrote for a friend’s dance performance
Composer: Francesca Caccini (1587 - after 1641)
Work: Ciaccona (year unknown)
Performer: Luigi Cozzolino, Andrea Benucci, Alfonso Fedi, Francesco Tomei
Caccini wrote some beautiful music and some fabulous bops (look up “Chi desia di saper”) but she didn’t write this ciaccona! It was actually composed by the violinist performing it, Luigi Cozzolino, but was misattributed because it was on an album of Caccini’s music. I believe there is a correction on the YouTube video of this piece but not sure they can correct it anywhere else. The more you know!
