thaos pointed out that the character here is one from dark sector
which reaffirms my suspicion that both this "dark shadow" poster and the "dark score" poster from my other post are likely dark sector easter eggs!

Due to advancements in PokƩCenter technology, manual work is only needed for severe cases or inaccessible areas. As such, Nurse Joy androids have begun to staff the main desks of high traffic PokƩCenters.
Unfortunately the stark fact is that Anakin objectively did treat the clones worse than other jedi did. That he was pretty good with them for three years might make him better than Krell but I doubt other jedi would have been prepared to override their free will entirely to force them to kill little kids. You canāt just⦠ignore that when looking at his relationship with the clones.
At the end of the day he cared about the clones the same way he cared about the jedi. He cared about Rex the same way he cared about Ahsoka and Obi Wan. He cared, just not enough not to betray them and kill them. He valued their lives, but not as much as he valued his needs.
I always found it really interesting that Anakinās fear of losing attachment was never triggered by Rex being in danger. He cares about all his friends deeply, and to a fault, and Rex is a close friend; as evidenced by the fact that he tells Rex about Padme. His attachment struggles come raring to the surface when he thinks Obi Wan is in danger, like when he thinks Obi Wan has been killed, or any time Padme or Ahsoka is in danger, but never once in any of the dangerous circumstances Rex ends up in. The blue shadow virus episode, for example, Anakin is incredibly anxious about Padme and Ahsoka, but Rex is also with them, and is also dying. When he gets shot on Selucamai, when he loses contact because the Rishi moon is overrun⦠not once does Anakin display any overprotectiveness of Rex. Strikes me as a little strange.
Anakin does sort of⦠have a hierarchy of importance he places on people? I donāt want to frame it as who he loves more because I feel thatās not exactly a useful way of looking at it. Itās more like there are certain attachments he has that he relies on as a bedrock of his identity and emotional stability. And a quality of those attachments is that he needs them to be absolute. That is what he ācanāt live without.ā And guess that Rex, despite being his friend, isnāt quite there. He can be more objective about him (but also⦠more indifferent.)
His attachment and fear of losing Obi Wan is more present, but even with Obi Wan he had a yearning for him to be in that role that Obi Wan never fully stepped into, and thatās something Anakin was always aware of. He canāt claim Obi Wan fully, not the way he does Padme, and by rots Anakin has distanced himself and is willing to let him die if it comes to it.
Ahsoka is his padawan and he feels that tie keenly, but when she leaves she also becomes someone whoās⦠well, not his. Out of his control. But even before then, in that blue shadow virus episode- as you say, he seemed a lot less concerned about Rex, but even Ahsoka took a backseat to Padme when he memorably ran to check on her before looking at the child in his care. Maybe if Padme hadnāt been there he would have had more room in his headspace to worry about Rex, too.
But mostly I think itās that his attachment issues arenāt just a matter of loving his friends too much and holding on too tightly. Itās also to do with him being unhealthily psychologically dependent on having this source of unconditional love and loyalty. He does know most people canāt give him that- possibly even that itās an unreasonable expectation to have. He doesnāt expect it from Rex, he doesnāt even expect it from Ahsoka, and heās much more capable of being normal about their friendship as a result. He maybe resented not having it from Obi Wan, who he tried to slot into a father-figure role, he had it from his mother, and then he seemed to have it from Padme.
So heās just. not as afraid to lose Rex. ā¦not attached. which⦠would be a good thing⦠if that didnāt mean in Anakinās mind that he mattered less. To be harsh about it.
#everybody matters less than padme#because padmeās the only one who would actually just turn a blind eye to fucking child murder#and he fucking knows it#up to and including rex#the saddest part is that rex is actually probably MORE loyal to anakin#than anakin ever was to rex#the way rex discusses anakin in rebels#is so fucking unsettling#because we as the audience know that anakin left rex to die#anakin USED rex for his own selfish agenda#anakin threw rex aside like he was nothing#he treated rex like the tool that rex always fought so hard against being seen as#we the audience know that rexās perception of anakin is too kind#too forgiving of his flaws#because rex doesnāt yet know the truth#that anakin never actually cared about rex all that much#and was never actually worth rexās loyalty and friendship
@kanansdume
If you just think about the fact that, in Anakinās mind, Rex is a tier below R2-D2 in terms of his care level⦠I think youāll realize just how bad the implications of that really are. š¬š¬š¬
Iāll need to disagree with you on that last part. droids are sentient beings and functionally people. There are multiple arcs both in legends and canon about droids fighting for their rights. Droids and clones have almost identical rights and are equally disposable. R2-D2 is a childhood friend of anakin, and has long since been by his side. he has shared with him many secrets and never erased his memory. R2 has also been deeply loyal. it makes perfect sense to me that R2 takes priority over rex. heād probably take priority over ahsoka. i dont think Anakin discriminates based on species (clone, droid, etc), he discriminates based on attachment. Rex doesnt serve Anakin, he serves the republic. He happens to do so alongside Anakin and theyāve had time to form a bond, but they are fundamentally members of seperate organisations. meanwhile R2 is Anakinās droid. He belongs to him and thus the loyalty is comfortably secure in Anakinās mind.
Anakin doesnt care about losing Rex because losing him was always part of the deal, and Anakin doesnt attach himself to people if he knows theyāll leave him. Its how heās learned to prevent himself from getting hurt emotionally.
So sorry for the late response. For some reason tumblr didnāt notify me of this reblog. Found it when someone liked my post from a while back. š
Anyways, Iām not saying droids are non-sentient/LESS than people. SW clearly has a moral line, and usually, if a character is treating a droid like shit (I mean like the REALLY bad stuff. Not just being mildly annoyed/indifferent like Obi-Wan gets sometimes), itās usually a hint to the audience that this SW character is a bad person.
So, yesādroids are sentient and deserve to be treated with respect.
But, as politely as I can think to say this: droids are NOT humans. They will never BE humans. Whereas a droid can ādieā like R2 did in that one episode when he saved a bunch of livesāR2 can also (unless heās completely blown to smithereens) be REPAIRED. Humans (like Rex) CANNOT be ārepairedā after death/āshutdownā. When a human dies⦠theyāre dead. And I know this might seem harsh: because I LOVE R2. I do! But all of the facts I just stated shouldāve automatically put Rex in terms of importance over R2-D2 for Anakin (who is ALSO supposed to be his friend).
Now, do I mean to say that I donāt UNDERSTAND why Anakin is so unhealthily attached to R2? No! I understand perfectly why heās that way with him.
But the point Iām making is this: understandable or not, in the end, it still doesnāt make it right.
To me, humans will always take priority over droids (in the event there is no other option to save both of them) because humans are organic beings who can PERMANENTLY die, whereas droids cannot.
This is where I am coming from when I say Anakinās thought process on R2 being above Rex in terms of his care level is chilling. Becauseāas messed up as Anakinās mind is from his childhoodāit doesnāt make it okay. There comes a point where your past doesnāt excuse your actions anymore. šš¤·āāļø Anakin had SO many opportunities and people to reach out to over the years. But the truth is that he didnāt WANT help. He wanted to be told āyesā all the time. Itās why he was so drawn to Palpatine; because the man stroked his ego. And itās also why he attacked Obi-Wan and PadmĆ© when they didnāt immediately agree to follow Anakin into his Sithy, darksider overlorderness.
Anyway, I kinda went off on a tangent (I love meta about SW š), but those are my thoughts on it.
will need to disagree with you again. droids can permanently die, as organic characters do. just because their brains are easier to repair doesnt mean their minds are. when R2-D2 "died", only his body was damaged. his memory and mind remained intact. it was more like a coma. in contrast, if you fix a droid who's memory is destroyed and no backups are made, that original droid is dead. even if the new mind runs on the same systems and behaves the same, the sentient being that was originally in that body is gone. its alive, its sentient, it might even identify as the same person, but its a new person in a dead person's shell. its why anakin refused to memorywipe R2, because it would functionally kill his oldest friend and put a new blank slate in his body. and then there's the body horror when you do make backups. that backup isnt the original droid, its a copy. even if it has all the memories, the original still died. (its even worse if there is a copy but the original is still alive). i recommend the game SOMA for a more detailed exploration of this topic. it handles these topics quite well. it highlights the existential dread and body horror of existing as a backup, or as the original that was left behind.
droid death is so normalized that its common and barely taken serious by most characters. their rights are such a non-topic to the inhabitants of star wars that its standard procedure to murder them. yes its funny to see the silly lanky robots get chopped to bits by lightsabers in the prequel era but every single one of those battle droids is a sentient being that displays empathy and understanding of its mortality. droids are so disposeable you can just shove in a new brain and forget they died. sentient, living beings with a mind and empathy and an understanding of life and death have their brains disposed of and replaced so their corpses can continue serving their masters.
