Main steps in population epigenomic analysis

a | DNA is tightly packaged in cells and is functionally modified by a variety of epigenetic marks, such as cytosine methylation (5mC) or post-translational changes in histone proteins.

b | The genome-wide distribution of different epigenetic marks can be measured using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies.

c | The computational challenge is to infer distinct chromatin states for each genomic position.

d | Shown are the chromatin state maps of M diploid individuals. Individuals differ in their chromatin states in three genomic regions.
