Your eyes flutter open and you can see. But you can’t move…. Why can’t you move!?

The woman in front of you was familiar. You couldn’t place it, but you knew her. And she seemed to read your worries despite your immobile state

Slowly some of your memories come trickling in. You remember being at a club… why were you there? You remember meeting the woman in front of you, though she was as dressed much differently, and then your memories fade back into a blurry haze

The woman changes where you’re looking so you’re looking down at your body…. It looked wrong right you knew this was your body, but it was a new one. You could see your joints exposed and they looked so pretty. You see hands gingerly taking one of your hands and a soft glow pulses into your arm. It feels so pleasant…

What was wrong with you. Why were you here why was your body wrong perfect you tried to struggle and will yourself to move. To run. To get out but your perfect body refused to move…

That’s right. You weren’t supposed to move during maintenance. How silly. You think to yourself. This lovely woman was taking such good care to help fix you again

You were always so forgetful, but she didn’t mind, you were out with your witch and you got bumped to the ground so you had to go back home to be repaired. It all made sense now, you relaxed as mistress continued to delicately repair your joints. You’d have to thank her later when you could move again, but it shouldn’t be much longer. You felt your sensations dulling as you slipped back into rest mode, but you faintly hear your mistress saying something as you slipped away

It appears to those on the brink of death, comprised of rusted scraps and held together by raw spectral power, fighting fit, armour bouncing shots that should have gone right through, moving at speeds far faster than it could in life.

Now, your gut reaction to this may be shock "how can anyone not understand a spiral? Surely the negative feedback loop and wear on the internals are clear enough of a sign?"

But this, students only represents half of what a spiral can be. Yes the self destructive logic loops get most of the attention, but that is not all that there is.

Sometimes your doll will spiral slowly, over days, or even weeks. Maybe longer. This spiral always starts small, drift of a millimetre, a delay you dont even notice. Perhaps your tea is a degree too cold. You may not notice, but the doll does.

Even if everything in your cottage is still cleaned to your setandards, even if your oders are still timely, even if your tea is still delicious. The doll notices.

Each speck of dust is logged, the doll compensates by going over it again, just one extra cycle on the task. Each microsecond is filed away as a failure, the doll overclocks, just slightly, to keep times to an exact degree.

We all know what that means, don't we? Extra wear on its internals, right?

Half true. Yes the physical state of your doll is affected, but its soul is also worn down. Each compensation made chips away at it my own doll graciously accepted having its thoughts used as a case study.

There are more, but, they get a lot more bleak as the spiral continues. By the time these deviances are noticabke to a witch, the spiral has usally progressed well past this point. Because if we notice, then it means that it is being pushed past the point where overclocking masks the issue.

So how do we fix an issue we cannot see? An issue we do not even know is an issue.

Maintenance, yes. Reassurance, perhaps, dolls can be very inelastic in their thinking, by design. Communication, yes.

All of these can help, regular maintenance lets you find the overclock damage and fix it before it becomes an issue, and makes these micron slips less common. Reassurance can work wonders, however if your doll is particularly set in its ways, consider that you might be doing more hard than good by accidentally minimising what it sees as an inherent flaw. Communication is the most important, at least how I do it.
