Now that is how this game is supposed to be played! Fushiguro Megumi, top player of this year’s high school season, puts it up—Bang!
The crowd roared, jumping to their feet as the ball fell through the rim of the hoop. Fans, dressed in deep blues and blacks, screamed as their hands uncontrollably reached out to friends and strangers alike, cheering on the Tokyo Jujutsu team. You rose to your feet in unison, clapping your hands together in excitement. The ball dropped gracefully to the floor, bounding its way courtside, directly to you.
“That’s my boy!” A white-haired man yelled from beside you, hands cupped around his mouth.
“Fu-shi-gu-ro!” The team’s manager, Nobara, yelled as well, clapping her hands.
You covered your giggle with a manicured hand, playfully rolling your eyes at your brother’s enthusiasm and Nobara’s excitement. Megumi had always been your brother’s favourite player, just as he was yours; but Gojo would never let anyone else on the team know about that.
Just before the basketball season started, Gojo dragged you along to one of his training sessions, telling you that he needed to do something before being able to take the both of you home.
“Wait here, I won’t be long,” he had said to you, leading you towards the bleachers. He sat you beside Nobara before dusting your skirt. “Don’t talk to anyone except for Kugisaki.”
“I’ll be fine, just go.” You laughed, settling into your seat.
“Everyone already knows the rules, idiot.” Nobara scoffed.
He turned around to the others in the gymnasium and lifted his sunglasses, eyeing a pink-haired boy. Quickly, he raised his finger and pointed.
“Yuji!” He yelled. “Did you hear me?”
“What was that coach?” The pink-haired boy said, raising a curious brow. His eyes turned to you almost immediately, widening only a fraction. “You look good today (y/n), I love the bows!”
“Itadori!” Nobara scolded, letting her face fall into the palm of her hand.
“Hey!” Your brother yelled again. “Eyes away brat.”
Yuji quickly turned his eyes away from you, nodding once. Gojo looked back at you with a cheeky smile, carefully placing your purse on the seat beside you; “I won’t be long,” he repeated.
So, you waited. You watched as the boys in your brother’s team initiated the drills themselves, running from one end of the court to the other. Several basketballs were played at once, bounced or passed from one person to another. Sneakers squeaked against the floors as the players sprinted, sweat gleaning across their bodies. Even watching from afar, disconnected from the players, you couldn’t take your eyes away from them. Your friends never expected you to be so intrigued by the game, always curious eyed whenever you would bring up leaderboard scores and thoughts on plays. They told you it was the way you dressed, the way you presented yourself. The bows, the skirts, the lavender and pink hues. But you were way past the stereotypes. Gojo had made sure of it. However many bows you more, however many purses he had to carry to and from his games, he wanted you with him. He wanted you to love what he loved because you were his sister, the most precious thing to him.
Gojo’s voice rang inside your mind as his team learned to perfect the movement of the ball with a simple wrist flick.
‘Keep the dribble lower!’
‘Yuji! Shoot now, flirt later’
Growing up with a former basketball player, and now a coach to a team, you learned to understand a different part of the game; the intellect required for plays, the way each player should use their unique height and wingspan to their advantage, or the intricate flow of the ball being tossed, dribbled and passed from one hand to another, from one player to another. You weren’t an expert at the game, of course; but you knew your brother. You knew the game through the statistical eyes of your role model. And that, in itself, was also entertaining enough for you.
It was enough to keep your eyes on the game. And definitely enough when your brother walked back into the gymnasium, a raven-haired boy in tow.
“Boys!” He yelled. “Get over here.”
The team dropped their basketballs where they stood and sauntered over to Gojo, eyeing the boy behind him. Gojo stood with his signature grin on his face, sunglasses pushed up his forehead.
The boy behind him was not smiling, but he wasn’t frowning either. His lips were thinned, staring out at the team with a heavy-lidded gaze. Even wearing a jacket, you could see his figure beneath the material. You trailed your gaze up his body. From his legs to his shoulders, this boy was broad, sculpted, and firm. Just as you reached his face, you noticed his eyes, dark and alluring, staring right back at you. He tilted his head, only slightly, raising a careful brow at you. You felt the heat of his stare puncture your chest, warming your body with a simple glint.
“This is Fushiguro Megumi,” Gojo introduced. “He’s our new player. His height will be a new turning point for our team, won’t it Megumi?”
Megumi looked away from you, towards your brother. He grunted in response, frowning. “I guess…”
“Have you met him before, (y/n)?” Nobara asked, leaning her shoulder against you. “Itadori and I have been friends with him for a while—you wouldn’t believe the look on Gojo’s face when he met him. Started gawking about his height, begging him to come and play.”
“Really?” You laughed. “Satoru is always like that. If he sees something that will be good for the team, he won’t stop till he gets it.”
“Now, Megumi, there is only one rule I have when you join the team.” Gojo landed a hard pat on Megumi’s back and pointed directly at you. “What is it boys?”
“Ugh…” Nobara grimaced. “Not again.”
“Stay away from (y/n),” they answered in chorus.
“Yuji,” Gojo said, gesturing his hand for the boy to repeat it once more. Alone.
Yuji gave your brother an incredulous look. “Stay away from (y/n).”
“That’s my boy,” Gojo said smugly.
“That’s obnoxious,” Megumi said, crossing his arms. He looked back at you. Gojo turned away, back facing Megumi. And, so slowly, the raven-haired boy smiled.
And he was so, so indescribably handsome.
The commentators voice started up again, echoing in your ears as you readjusted the volume of your earphones.
“Fushiguro Megumi, taking the lead for the Tokyo Jujutsus on the buzzer. A rookie he may be, but a star player of this team nonetheless.”
Your lip quirked upwards, eyes searching for the raven-haired boy. He stood across the court, swiping his forehead with the hem of his singlet. Beside him, a Yuji grabbed his shoulders and jumped. They both turned in your direction at the call of their coach.
You looked over at the white-haired man once again and tugged your earphones from your ears, “Satoru!”
He looked over at you, grinning. “How was that, (y/n)?”
“It was so good!” You cheerfully said. “I’m going to wait by the lockers for you.”
“Want me to come?” Nobara offered.
Nobara nodded once, as did Gojo, giving you your cue to head off. After rolling the wire of your earphones around your hands, you tucked them into your purse and stood. The team was nearing now, their chatter getting louder and louder. Low, baritone notes caught your ear, turning your head on instinct. Megumi was only a few feet away, head turned to his friend, but his eyes were on you.
Quiet and alluring, the deep midnight hues of his gaze trailed down your figure. In the corner of his lips, you saw the ghost of an imperceptible smile. Your cheeks warmed at the sight and your body suddenly ran hot. Tearing your gaze away from him, you started on your way, manoeuvring around Gojo.
“(y/n),” Gojo suddenly said, tugging at the hem of your skirt.
“Why is my star player eyeing you up?” He asked, a hint of amusement and teasing in his tone.
“Maybe I’m just too irresistible.” You shrugged.
Gojo barked out a laugh, letting go of your skirt and waving you off. “Go away.”
The locker room was quiet, filled intermittently by the distant echoes of the team only a couple hallways down. You could still feel the rush of the game thrumming throughout your body—could still feel the heat of Megumi’s gaze on you as you left the gymnasium.
A gentle buzz from your phone broke the silence, followed a second later by two ‘ding’ sounds. You looked down at your phone, lit up by the text notification:
‘Neptune?’
You laughed, swiping up on the screen; ‘Negative’, you replied.
Just then, you heard the familiar pattern of footsteps approaching the open door. Megumi appeared seconds later, turning his head around the corner, towards your usual spot.
“Hey beautiful.” He smiled, grabbing your hand and pulling you up.
Your chest fell into his, the residual sweat from his game dampening your blouse just slightly. You scrunched your nose in feigned annoyance before placing your hands around the back of his neck.
“You’re all sweaty,” you whispered, pulling him deeper into a hug.
“Don’t you think I deserve this after that win?” He teased, burying his nose into the crook of your neck.
He breathed a deep sigh into the hollow of your collarbone, sending chills throughout your body.
“I was going to come to you tonight,” you said.
“Can you convince Gojo your friends are picking you up tonight?” Megumi asked, pulling his face away from your neck. “And then just hide in my car.”
“Satoru always drives me home.” You frowned, shaking your head.
Megumi sighed, “Just this once? Please.”
You bit your lower lip, peering over his shoulder before looking back up into his eyes. His eyebrows were downturned at the ends, pleading.
“Okay, fine,” you relented, smiling. “But you’re buying me dinner.”
“I always buy you dinner,” Megumi chuckled. “Now… I thought we had a tradition.”
You placed a single, manicured finger over his lips. “You’re going to have to wait. Satoru bought me these clothes this morning and now I’m going to have to explain why they’re kind of wet.”
“Tell him there was a problem at the water fountain.” Megumi shrugged, hands moving slowly from your waist to your hips.
“Satoru buys me water bottles, why would I need to be drinking from a fountain?” You teased, pulling him down by his neck.
His lips were coming down to yours. You could feel his hot breath against your nose and the steady beat of his heart against your chest. Closing in, your eyes fluttered closed, shivering at the closeness, the intimacy. His lips were soft as they landed on yours, molded to the shape of your mouth. He was always so gentle, moving along with you, never pushing too far, never going too fast. And, every time, you could feel his smile against your own. It told you he wanted it as much as you did; wanted you as much as you did him.
Which is why you always wondered why he hadn’t asked you to be his girlfriend yet. Why were you always sneaking around your brother? Why was he always dancing around the topic?
Yet, like always, whenever he had his lips on yours, grabbed you the way he did, looked at you in those quiet, captivating ways… all those questions and ‘why’s left your mind. And all you could think about was him.
“Fushiguro!” A voice yelled from the hallway.
Almost immediately, Megumi’s hands came away from your waist and you unravelled your hands from his neck, instinctively pushing gently at his chest. He took one step away from you, eyes frantically searching the locker rooms. You took your usual seat on the bench, planting your face into the screen of your phone.
A moment later, Yuji walked in, followed by Nobara. Their eyes scanned the locker room before their heads turned to the left, landing on you and Megumi. Alone.
“Oh,” Yuji said. Then, less than a second later. “Oh~”
“You are so lucky we are not Gojo right now,” Nobara crossed her eyes, but a smirk flickered in the corner of her lips. Mischief ran rampant in the glint of her eyes.
“Do you guys mind?” Megumi scowled, shoving Yuji away when he idled up to him.
“(y/n), my sweet girl,” Nobara placed a solemn hand over her heart. “Your phone is off.”
You looked down at the device and saw your reflection in the dark, unlit screen. Your cheeks warmed at the sight.
“I thought I told you the safe zones,” Yuji shook his head at his friend sincerely. “Your bedroom. Safe. Her bedroom. Not safe. Outside the gym when Gojo isn’t around. Kind of safe. Locker room? Number one not a safe zone.”
“I’m pretty sure Gojo has a tracker on his sister so maybe Megumi’s bedroom is not a safe zone,” Nobara added.
“He does not have a tracker on me,” you laughed, rolling your eyes.
“That guy sure spends a lot of money on you though.” Yuji grinned, eyeing your outfit. “This one, I like.”
Megumi raised his hand and swatted his friend’s head, moving him away from you. “Keep your distance.”
“I picked this one out,” you smiled brightly, dusting off your skirt. “Matching bow, too!”
“You look gorgeous,” Nobara smiled, sitting down beside you. She toyed with the ruffles on your skirt, rolling the lace through her fingers. “Might want to figure out a way to excuse the wet patch on your chest.”
“Water fountain drink gone wrong,” Yuji pitched in.
“She has a water bottle,” Megumi said, sighing.
“Megumi! Yuji!” Your brother’s voice suddenly erupted from around the corner. “Why did you guys run off in the middle of a—”
“Gojo!” Nobara smiled brightly. “Was wondering where you were.”
“Why are you here with (y/n)? Who said you could be here with (y/n)?” Gojo narrowed his eyes on the boys. He then turned to Nobara with a pout, “Kugisaki! I thought we had a plan!”
“Plan A doesn’t work if you keep bringing your sister to every game,” she argued. “We’ve already established this.”
“Plan A?” Yuji questioned.
“Answer yourselves boys,” Gojo crossed his arms, giving a pointed look to Yuji in particular.
“Me?” He asked incredulously. “It’s not even me that—”
Megumi landed a harsh smack on his friend’s back, widening his eyes at the boy with a crazed smile. “We didn’t know she was in here. We needed to get some water from the fountain.”
Gojo frowned, raising a brow. Slowly, his gaze trailed over to you. You peered up at your brother, an innocent smile playing on your lips.
“What happened to your blouse?”
“Trouble at the water fountain.” Your shrugged.
“You have a water bottle for a reason.” Your brother squinted his eyes, flickering them over to Megumi.
“I was drinking water and then Itadori accidentally covered the pipe,” Megumi said. “It just started spraying everywhere. Must have gotten it on her clothes.”
“Right,” Gojo said. He looked at Megumi for a moment. Silent. Then, he turned to Yuji. “Why aren’t you wet?”
Your eyes caught onto Megumi’s hand twisted into the back of Yuji’s singlet. His knuckles turned white as his grip of Yuji’s shirt tightened. Megumi slowly turned to his friend, the same smile plastered on his face, the same wide-eyed gaze.
“I was… I did it on purpose to spray Fushiguro,” Yuji said, bringing his hand up behind him and pushing Megumi’s arm away.
Gojo looked at Nobara and raised an eyebrow.
“I saw it all happen. I ran to protect (y/n) but I was too late… the damage was done… near death experience by water fountain.” Nobara looked down at her nails, bored.
“Satoru,” you whined. “Go be a coach or whatever it is you do. I’m fine. Just send this to the dry cleaners tomorrow.”
“Yeah, just tell me which one.” Gojo sighed and gestured towards the door. “Yuji, Megumi, Kugisaki, let’s go. My sister has had enough of you guys.”
One by one, they all filed out the door. Your brother went first, leading the way. Nobara followed after him after winking at you. Yuji went next, finally freeing his hand from Megumi’s grasp.
And Megumi, finding any reason to stay back just a moment longer, called out that he needed to tie his shoes and grab his towel. After hearing Gojo say he would give him thirty seconds, Megumi let out a long, deep exhale. He looked up at you with a shy smile, placing a hand along your cheek.
“If Gojo insists on driving you home, I’ll come get you tonight. I’ll be parked down the street,” Megumi whispered, rubbing circles on your cheek with the pad of his thumb.
“Megumi…” You licked your lips, toying with the fabric of your skirt. “What are we?”
Megumi paused. He looked down at you. Quiet, deliberating.
“I don’t like lying to my brother… I just…”
Quickly, he leaned down and placed another kiss on your lips. Just a peck. So soft, so gentle. And yet, all so warm, all so intimate.
“Come to mine. I’ll give you your answer tonight. I want to do it when I’m not covered in sweat and ruining your outfits.” He whispered against your lips.
“Okay,” you said, nodding.
He placed another kiss on your lips. Deeper this time, pushing your head into his, moving his mouth in synchronicity with yours. And then he pulled away, just for a second, and kissed you again. A peck.
“See you later.” He grinned.
Megumi left the room not long after, his shoes tied and towel in his hand. You took a deep breath and sighed, leaning your head against the tiles of the wall. Quiet, you thought, peaceful. Just a moment alone again to think. To calm down from the thrill of the game; and from the thrill of seeing Megumi again.
But just as you closed your eyes, listening to the sounds echoing down the hallways and reverberating off the walls. You heard your brother’s voice in the room. You opened your eyes, seeing his white-hair peeking just around the corner from the door.
“(y/n),” he said, smiling to himself.
“Might want to re-do your lipgloss.” He nodded. “Save yourself the shame of wearing the same sparkled lips as my top player.”
