Idk it looks smooth as hell from where I’m standing
Another successful week of our new screen time agreement and I’ve discovered another unexpected perk:
Because the kids like to spend their iPad hour playing Minecraft TOGETHER, they are working together and communicating well and problem solving as a team during that hour, and those cooperation skills have carried over into the rest of the day. It’s not perfect and there’s still a lot of bickering and chaos, but there’s also been a lot more peaceful, happy playing together. They’ve been turning the living room into a Lego village all week and I don’t even care that there are legos literally on every surface in the room because they’ve just been having such a nice time.
And now that they’re doing more chores, I can spend my own chore time doing the things I’ve been meaning to get to for ages but haven’t had time, because they’ve helped stay on top of the daily laundry / tidying / vacuuming stuff.
The children have negotiated a new screen time arrangement and they THINK they got a better deal but in fact ‘twas I who benefitted.
Instead of tv every afternoon and iPads on Fridays for two hours only, they’ve elected for 1 hour of screen time per day. They can choose whether that hour is spent on the iPad or watching tv. And they each have to do one chore, selected by mom, before it can begin.
What has happened as a result is that my house is cleaner. Because now that they’re doing more chores, they’re more aware of what needs to be done and are getting better at preventing messes from happening (wiping their feet before they come in and putting their shoes away neatly, rinsing their toothpaste down the sink instead of leaving globs, putting toys and books in their correct places instead of shoving them in a cabinet to deal with later).
AND there’s not as much nagging and begging for screens. AND they tend to spend their hour per day playing Minecraft together rather than mindless junk games full of ads. AND they’re getting better at turning them off when the timer goes off. AND they’re reading or listening to audiobooks in the afternoon instead of watching tv. TV is SO dysregulating for N and affects his mood really dramatically, but he generally will choose the iPad instead so my TV has not even been turned on in five days.
The arrangement will not work during the school year, but for the rest of summer, it’s made our days so much more peaceful.
The kids and I are reading Redwall and we just got to the part with Chickenhound and Methuselah, so. My kids are inconsolable.

i saw this somewhere else but reply / tag what you did today so everyone can see that we all did something different today
Do me a favour and reblog this with a show you like that was cancelled after only one season. I don't mean shows that were always meant to be miniseries or shows that work perfectly well as a standalone story, or shows that might still get renewed. I mean shows that are and will forever remain unfinished. The more obscure the better.
N has stopped saying “bro” all the time and started saying “dude” instead, and it’s still annoying, but it’s somehow less annoying.
In the spring I spent $500 on a sturdy, simple “big kid” swing set and let me tell you, for a household with neurodivergent kids, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. It is SO regulating for G, it resets his mood like you wouldn’t believe. Sometimes the kids both go out there, swing on the swings while separately listening to music on their mp3 players with headphones on, and it’s the closest I get to peace all day.
As soon as I posted about the black walnut tree, I went out and cut down the biggest sapling that was blocking the light from my Susans and within six hours they started to open up!

What an absolute joy to confirm that what I worried was tree of heaven all over my yard is in fact black walnut saplings and soooo much easier to kill!
I had originally assumed black walnut because there’s a massive one nearby, but when we cut it down last year the stump respawned so much and so quickly that I feared I had made an error and unleashed a tree of heaven beast. But no! The gardening pro at the library told me how to tell definitively and it looks like I just need to be more aggressive about cutting it back (which is the opposite of what you want with tree of heaven)
And now I can hack it away and it won’t crowd out my Susans which are juuuust about to open 🙌
I’m the parent who will always buy every single thing on the school supply list, including extras if there’s a good sale, and all the cleaning supplies and tissues the teacher might request throughout the year. So it doesn’t really affect me, but when I got the email this morning from the district saying that ALL local elementary schools will be providing ALL supplies for ALL kids, I know parents (and teachers) all over the city were feeling a burden lifted off their shoulders and I’m so glad the city made room for this in the budget.
Probably still going to send extra tissues when my kids have their months-long frequent nosebleeds in the winter, though.
There isn’t a feeling quite like watching my extremely talented child practice the things he’s good at. I can’t take any credit for it - I got him an electric piano, sure, I pay for his lessons, but I don’t make him practice, I don’t request that he learn certain things. I don’t make him take the lessons, I’m not a stage mom at all - he showed an interest and I followed his lead. He’s genuinely amazing all on his own. It’s just crazy that he’s my kid, I made this little person, and he’s playing In The Hall of the Mountain King with his eyes closed.
Anyone have any advice for how to properly and safely clean 100+ year old stained glass windows?

Lost the ticket war three times, barely scraped by with a win on the 4th attempt.
Raced to the merch line to get a hat right before they sold out.
Blessed in this life because I was at the Noah Kahan night 1 rain show at Fenway.
Aaaaalright I spent way too much money on concert merch the last month so I am officially putting myself on a spending ban.
I hope Noah buys his mom something nice with my money.
