@terrorsave 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗯!
"hey, kev," she sits on the landing of the staircase, legs swinging to-and-fro either side of the bars of the railing as she peers down at him, leather jacket painted in the colours of the distant sunset far beyond the metal bars of the courtyard, "on the nightshift, huh?" she's waiting for her brother, making the most of the brief overlap before the changeover. the rest of the cops on their smoke break won't talk to her, the little sister of stars finest, but kevin isn't like the rest of them. "or are you done for the day? if you are - chris is gonna be a while and i'm real thirsty. you heading to j's?" she leans forward, the guise of seeing him better that is completely intentional in the way the neckline of her shirt hangs just low enough to catch the attention of a man all-too-eager to waste his time with college girls on the mere suggestion he might get lucky. it works in her favour.
he probably should get his paperwork done. the stack had begun to sag in a way that threatens to topple any moment but out of sight, out of mind. they had stuck him behind the front desk, marvin's idea; the man was always coming up with ways of trying to inspire kevin to rise to the occasion, as if he did not have enough responsibilities and that by adding more, it might trick him into accepting the greatness his direct superior saw in him. just because kevin has the physical strength and the skill of a sharp-eyed shooter, did not mean he wanted to do anything other than coast through life.
" marv thinks i'm better suited for it. " he is leaned as far back in the chair as he can manage, filthy boots propped up on the desk. the massive calendar that rita keeps leaving little notes on about community events and office birthdays has collected whatever is dislodge from the treads. he glances at the clock. he still has four more hours until he is technically off duty but he usually spends most of that time asleep in the rec room at the back. " they do keep those s.t.a.r.s boys real busy. "
kevin eyes her, too oblivious and obvious to not leer at the scoop of flesh her top puts on display or the way her thighs straddle the banister posts. she is off-limits, everyone knows that. an unspoken rule that most every guy here follows: you don't date a co-worker's wife, ex-wife or sister. especially younger sisters. not that he has ever followed the rules.
" yeah i was thinkin' about it. thirsty-thursday, am i right? " he laughs, loud and clear, ringing through the space as quiet as a tomb. the chair swivels as he glances at the calendar. " aw fuck it's wednesday. close enough. "
a spitfire masquerading as downy-feathered angel, target locked on the rpd's most charismatic failure so easily disarmed with a smile and the flutter of lashes. "sounds like you've got the best deal. s.t.a.r.s are all out by the river, or something, chris won't tell me anything about it," her annoyance is genuine, as if her brother has committed a cardinal sin by refusing to gossip. raccoon city is a quiet little town, remarkably unremarkable, painfully average — there's nothing out in the woods to worry about. "everyone else is at the stadium right? go raccoon city sharks!" laughter, mellifluous, spills from her lips.
kevin's a fun guy / an idiot / a pervert. it works in her favour. excitement guides her smile — flirting with an older man a dangerous game she plays eagerly — single finger tapping her cheek, once, twice. she has taken to the cusp of adulthood with wild abandon, any threat deliquesced in the sanctuary provided by the police station. the angel of justice standing, silent, her back to claire's eyes.
"hmm," the pads of her fingers along the post of the bannister, a slow slide to the base, a performance to whet his appetite with the plausible deniability that is the guise of innocence worn on her features as she cants her head. a cascade of red hair around the curve of her shoulders, bare save the feint starshower of freckles, jacket slouched around her elbows . "how about wet wednesday, then?" as the sun's death throes paint the sky in twilight, the fun is to be found out on the streets, inside the bars: the neon-hum of crooked signs above doorways and the music warbled from jukeboxes far beyond their prime. she assumes kevin's locker is filled with booze and cigarettes, the break room always shrouded in the musty haze that has formed a yellow film to the ancient wallpaper — boring, compared to the world outside that deems her competent and quick enough to ride a bike but not to swallow a shot. "saw david in the hallway earlier. i'm sure he'll cover for you. sure you can escape for a quickie, huh?"
her shoulders drops from her ears and visually she deflates, tension along her thin frame melting with a few words, like she was just waiting for things to be smoothed over. a pardon handed over from someone she cares so deeply for. not that she had much of an argument in place, sherry highly doubted she needed it. deep down, she knew that claire would understand. she had already gone through the hardest part of chris finding out. a group of armed men yelling at each other made the inevitable reveal to claire all the easier.
" i do-- i want to. i was actually kind of hoping that we could chat a little, i wanted to talk to you about him and, " she inhales deeply through her nose, bright eyes catching a glint from the overhead light as she gives a bittersweet smile, blinking rapidly a few times. " other stuff. you're one of the only people i trust. " she has been nursing the betrayal poorly, despite the fact that she is a grown adult, it still hurts like she is a child. a rawness in her, a wound that had not healed after the days she spent surviving off vending machine junk food and hiding from a monster that called out her name.
" i hope they have something chocolate. i had some amazing twice baked chocolate ganache croissants last time i was in france and i've been craving them lately. " she reaches for the handle and swings the door open. " i am too cool but it's fine. " a dramatic sigh. a fragile, white hand lifts to tuck the fringe of her hair behind her ear. " i've come to accept my fate. i will always be on the back of the bike. " she tosses a smile over her shoulder, " jake drives one too. "
inside her chest — the abscesses formed in retaliation to a life such as theirs : loss a raw wound where something virulent has festered, smothered only by fear. an ever-present weight, the betrayal of the body and she knows now how the other has lived, with eyes on the inside, sins of another etched into her bone — it is a wonder she stands so tall, smiles so bright — anxieties deliquesce as pride swells within her breast, a millefleur over the stains of her heart. sherry birkin is the only good thing to ever come out of umbrella.
"long overdue, huh? told you being an adult was no fun," a valkyrie fettered, the long years have ground her down. she hopes sherry does not hold it against her — has not noticed the fire of her has dulled down. "a chat's long overdue. i meant to call you after i got back from sonido but, you know how it is." nothing is ever simple, ever easy, outside of the rise and set of the sun and the turn of the earth. a wave is given to her colleagues, a quick going for lunch! given before she turns towards the car park. "got some stuff i wanted to talk to you about too, but first, pastries."
summer sun, spilling through the eyes of the office — drenched in light, accompanied by the melody of life outside the building, the heartbeat of the world tapped out in footsteps, in birdsong, in laughter of those passing by. little pleasures that have made the horrors worth it and sherry, ever the sunspot in her vision, has been with her from the first tragedy. delicate fingers achieve little, she's found — joy, feathered and fleeting, must be grasped with both hands and held in a fist. if jake makes her happy, who is she to judge when her love life seems sempiternally poor? already, warmed by a smile, she has made up her mind : jake is not his father, just as sherry's is not hers, just as she is not her brother. her keys knock together, a dulled windchime pulled from her pocket as she heads to her bike — the valkyrie's red chariot, flames and all. "oh, does he now? i like him already."
summertime

if capcom is going to give her bowgun to ada, her leather jackets and motorcycles to leon, the least they could do is let claire have a fun sense of style again instead of trapping her in boring business casual and the same red leather jacket over and over.
post rev-2 claire teppen art you are so special.
man, in the cv intro claire kills at least 22 totally-alive uninfected people until she's stopped by rodrigo. i think she has the highest bodycount of non-infected from a good guy. whoops.
thinking about this again and seeing the kaitai shinsho also confirms it: "the girl was a “crazy” woman who had infiltrated the paris laboratory building by herself, inflicting numerous casualties - mainly due to the fact that the higher-ups, overreacting to the intrusion, even ordered the shooting of a combat helicopter."

( an assortment of dialogue prompts for various crime / mafia / detective / criminal underworld scenarios. trigger warning for dark themes. feel free to change as you seem fit. )
❛ i always get paid in the end, one way or another. ❜
❛ maybe you just need someone to tell you what to do. ❜
❛ i don’t think you fully understand the situation you’re in. ❜
❛ rule one: don’t get caught. ❜
❛ i do what people pay me to do. ❜
❛ consider this a professional courtesy. ❜
❛ i want us to be friends. i want us to trust each other. ❜
❛ you thought you could just fuck with us, and we wouldn’t fuck with you? ❜
❛ can we just exchange three words without you pulling a gun on me? ❜
❛ the detective’s life isn’t an easy one. but it rarely lacks for excitement. ❜
❛ i don’t have time for distractions right now. ❜
❛ tell me, what was life like on the other side? ❜
❛ so, to what do i owe this pleasure? ❜
❛ how many fights have you been in this week? ❜
❛ you want a silencer pistol? sure, if one’s on sale. ❜
❛ go ahead. you might as well finish the job. ❜
❛ can i at least buy you a drink? ❜
❛ you’re gonna get yourself killed if you keep this up. you know that, right? ❜
❛ we’re not all savages here, sweetheart. ❜
❛ the only thing that’s gonna keep you safe in this world is that gun. ❜
❛ i’ll teach you something about punishment. ❜
❛ do we have your allegiance or not? ❜
❛ why is it whenever we see each other, you’re covered in blood? ❜
❛ you wanted the truth. i’ve given it to you. it’s up to you what you do with it. ❜
❛ you’re playing nurse to a killer, you know. ❜
❛ this your idea of laying low? ❜
❛ looks like you could use a bodyguard. ❜
❛ you look great. like a million bucks of real money. ❜
❛ working together again, it’s just like old times. ❜
❛ drink all you want, but we need to stay focused. ❜
❛ you’re like a cockroach i can’t kill. i mean it in a good way. ❜
❛ you eat, or you get eaten. animals call it survival. humans call it business. ❜
❛ i could teach you how to fight, but i wasn’t equipped to take care of you. ❜
❛ i wanted to hurt them for the way they hurt you. ❜
❛ no one’s worth a bullet between the eyes. ❜
❛ may i have my gun back? ❜
❛ who taught you how to do that? ❜
❛ i’m gonna make you an offer. one time only. ❜
❛ i had it under control. you didn’t need to do that. ❜
❛ you still have to keep up appearances. ❜
❛ the bodies he buried laid the foundation of what we are now. ❜
❛ imagine how quickly you can succeed if you just take what you want. ❜
❛ that wasn’t a punch. if i’d punched you, you’d be on the floor. ❜
❛ the choice to live an ordinary life is no longer an option for me. ❜
❛ i need you to focus on this case. not on me. can you do that? ❜
❛ you’re still an honest person. it’s the rest of the world that’s gone crooked. ❜
❛ all you need to do is exactly what i tell you to do. ❜
❛ i’ve done things i’m not proud of. i’ve hurt people and i’m going to hurt more. ❜
❛ blood money buys the best art. ❜
❛ everyone who ever helped me is dead. i don’t want that to happen to you. ❜
❛ i don’t kill people. not even scumbags like you who deserve it. ❜
❛ you treat all your ladies like this? ❜
❛ you’re not very good at retiring. ❜
❛ remember who the real enemy is. ❜
❛ you’re one of us now. nobody ever tell you that? ❜
❛ i’m the lucky one who pulled you out of the garbage. ❜
❛ if it were up to me, you would’ve been dead a long time ago. ❜
❛ everyone in that room has lived far worse than anything you’ve ever done. ❜
❛ if you’re doing it to help someone, doesn’t that make it okay? ❜
❛ you don’t get to be at the top without making enemies looking to tear you down. ❜

once again i am begging fandom / the rpc to realise that top / bottom are not synonymous with dom / sub ( and that domming is not the same as being bossy / dominating ). your cis woman character cannot top a cis man unless there's pegging involved. she can be on top physically. they are not the same.
↪ ᵀᴴᴱ 𝑀𝐼𝐶𝐾 , ꮲꭲ 2 . ( a series of sentence starters from season 1 of fox's sitcom , “ the mick ” adjust phrasing as necessary . )
damn , [ name ] , how many cars can one person crash ?
i can't help it — when i'm behind the wheel , i'm a slave to the power of the machine .
other people worked very hard to buy those cars , and now they're mine .
why you gotta put me in a cage ?
i'm not a rat , okay ?
shut up , you don't know what you're talking about .
i am NOT joking , i don't wanna do this .
guys , we don't snitch . that's it , end of story .
will you listen to yourself ?? "jUsT tElL tHe tRuTh"
[ name ] , you snitch you die !
pretty sure that was already there when i walked up .
how is this good news ?
everyone's gonna call me a traitor , like you .
don't worry about it , it was worth it .
what are you doing tomorrow night ?
just say the words , and it can be yours .
oh , it's like that , huh ? fine .
what was that ? i can't hear you ... you can't breathe ?
you better figure something out , 'cause if you don't — i'll have to go public with this .
that's called extortion , stupid !
those guys are just covering their own asses , they don't even like you .
as easily as i can save you in this world , i can destroy you .
if anybody messes with you , let us know - okay ?
with a dong like that , you'd think he'd be happier .
do i look like i'm playing , [ last name ] ?
oh , your breath reeks of booze .
i hope you have a plan .
i was up all night watching prep school movies in preparation .
there are some real evil illuminati-type vibes in here , right ?
there was a time i could see , and i have seen .
oh , i'm just getting warmed up .
we are but food for worms , gentlemen .
whose burrito did i just step in ?
get out of here , the tv's mine .
what did you do to my shirt ??
how would you feel if i ran around stealing your clothes ?
we had to kill him cause he wasn't a team player .
no more special treatment for you .
i grew up in squalor , i am perfectly comfortable in it .
[ name ] , don't you dare !
didn't know you were gonna be so weird about it .
if you decide that you don't want me around , just tell me and i will go .
you're not the only game in town , buddy , okay ?
you don't know who i hang out with .
jealousy is the reason people hate us .
you don't have to worry about labels , just like who you like .
i hope this is some sort of emergency .
you kept me waiting , so i'm gonna get right to it .
don't make this your thing , this is [ name's ] thing .
suing is how rich white people solve their problems .
i wanted to sing and show you there's nothing to be afraid of .
i'm so nervous for you ... i want to throw up and run away .
you could have me escorted out , but you have no security .
ooh , dark scary room ! you know what they call that in prison ? they call that a blind spot . great place to catch a shiv .
what kind of operation are you running here ?
you didn't do anything wrong . i was the problem , not you .
where i'm from , the guest gets the good seat .
i drink , smoke , lie , steal ... i'm drunk right now .
i will ruin him . please don't let me do that .
i'm not the one doing whatever you guys are doing ... what are you doing ?
i'm not judging , at least he's a hot mess .
it's the wolf's job to eat the sheep , so y'know ... this was bound to happen .
i will RUIN you when we get home .
i'll give it back to you in a minute , you're gonna get it back .
the suit you destroyed cost a grand !
come on , [ name ] . i'll help you get settled .
he can't know it was my idea .
she made her mean bed and she can sleep in those scratchy sheets .
woah , tough day at the office ?
what the hell did you just say to me ?
you are right ... no matter what you say about anything .
we do this all the time , but usually there's some art to it .
this is not nearly as fun as i thought it was gonna be .
you're letting a bunch of nerds pick on you with their computers ?
why don't you just systematically destroy her ?
i can see where this is headed , so i'm just gonna hit the road .
she ripped me open , stuffed me full of devastation and then sewed me back up again .
leave me alone , this is all your fault .
why are they yelling ? are they angry cause they're bad musicians ?
i will never understand your generation .
let me have it . how bad is it ?
do you have any idea what i saw in there ?
you should come and check out what's going on outside , cause i think you'll be pleasantly surprised .
i just want us to be friends again .
it would be such a silly waste of time for someone like me to be mad at someone as insignificant as you .
the truth is , i pity you .
when the universe gives you a sign , it's not up to you to ignore it .
[ name ] gave it to me . it means i'm in charge .
i'm not comfortable with the whole arrangement . where's [ name ] ?
this is outrageous ! i'm getting passed over again ?
i don't have a problem , i'm just blowing off some steam .
you wanna get in on this ?
you deserve to take a time out as much as anybody else .
sorry , i didn't realize you were the fun police .
having money has reaaally changed you .
i've lost control ?! oh no , you dumb , dumb idiot . YOU'VE lost control .
that's a gross overreaction .
i will show myself the door in a ... graceful and classy manner .
thanks for sticking around .
look , i realize i did some questionable things in there .
i just felt like the universe was giving me a sign .
i'm the only one worthy of its power !
keep it in your pants and follow my lead .
it's no offense , i just don't know you very well .
let's go over this one more time , just so we're clear .
we've already been over the terms .
what's in it for you ?
i like the element of surprise .
wasn't expecting that . are you okay ?
i saw a burglar , i didn't know what to do ... so i SMOKED his ass !
you SHOT me ! what the hell's the matter with you ?
that gunpowder's like a hundred years old , it probably just broke the skin .
what about the police ? they're expecting a gunshot victim .
guys , we've gotta move this along , okay ?
you got it , i'll get you a pillow .
you're lucky no one was killed .
here's the thing about the bordeaux ... i drank it .
i'm so sorry that you had to keep our mansion warm .
how do you think the police found them ?
if you're done criticizing me , i think i'll head on up to bed .
you want me to do the jobs no one else wants ?
can we pick this up tomorrow ? i was shot , so ... i'm very tired .
it has nothing to do with that . okay ? now please leave .
i wanted to thank you for having my back earlier .
that had nothing to do with you . i was just trying to hurt them .
it's chloroform . i found a recipe online .
[ name ] , don't come at me with that .
i was gonna do whatever it takes . i'm not a quitter.
i wanna tell you , i really do . but first there's something i need .
oh my god , you're bailing again .
innocent people don't sneak in and out of their own home .
'cause i don't like you , that's why .
i'd rather get mowed down in a hellfire of bullets than listen to you screech .
you don't have to lie . i heard you guys .
how was i supposed to know you were gonna hug me ? i didn't even know you knew how to hug .

favourite moment of code veronica is claire's "so there never was an alexia!" because like, girl, you watched the video. twice. you read the newspaper article. you know alexia is real.
"oh, i'd love to but unfortunately," he's a poor shot with that rifle - thank god - but at this range, it wouldn't matter. it's been days since she's eaten and what brief somnolent dips she's been afforded have come at the cost of blows to the head from the pistol edge of umbrella's grunts. what confidence she has, dwindling by the hour, is owed to the redfield spirit. still, her bowgun remaining pointed at @myrmecitis, "some freak in the middle of an identity crisis keeps getting in my way."
he won't kill her - she's seen the dungeons below the infirmary, flicked through the pages of the anatomist. no, this lunatic likes to toy with people, pull them apart. the madness of the nest pales in comparison to this island. "i'll be out of your hair as soon as you give me that last proof so we can get the hell out of here. we both get what we want, right? so just hand it over." her head pounds - the scent of gas still lingers on her jacket, in her hair, a noxious passenger that confidence can't remove. god, she hopes it wasn't poisonous.
"go crawl back into whatever hole you came out of." : arcane starters.

Soon as he finishes, he already knows her mind is whirring, running wildly trying to sort everything out even in it's freshness into something that makes some coherent sense. But he gets it. He's been there as much as he hates to admit it. The scrambled state of your mind in the aftermath especially once adrenaline fades along with the chaos, that thrumming state of fight or flight, alertness that begs you to stay focused, to process later - it's a lot to come down from. In some ways, fucked as it was to say, he preferred to not have to think on the incidents in question, especially so soon after they'd happened if only because of that petrifying vulnerability that came with it.
The feeling of reality crumbling down, at trying to sort it all out into neat piles to even begin to make sense of things to others is nothing short of impossible. A nightmare. He waits patiently for her to try, knowing if anyone could do it, it'd be Claire. Though he can't explain it, there is a pang of something nervous, fearful in it's chilled touch as he realizes that her whole journey definitely began way before her capture in Rockfort. That he isn't sure he wants to know the full extent of what she'd gone through before then. It already sounds bad . . .
Swallowing thickly, he can't help but laugh roughly at her comment, bittersweet, a recognized attempt to keep things floating out of an unspoken fear they'd sink & drown. Too bad it's a trial to pretend it's not as serious a thing as they try to pretend it isn't - the sight of stiff shoulders, the tired look keeping her eyes clouded a shade darker - the way a smile can barely even twitch at her lips despite her earlier attempt at being light-hearted. Claire's exhausted in more ways then one, though he's barely much better.
Strained silence stretches thin over the pair, pulled taut but bearing a fragility any wrong move or word could break it - but it needs to be done, sooner or later, & with how things ended up? How they'd escalated, now was as good a time as any to clear it all out & bandage the 'wound' as best they could. Peering into conflicted eyes, he presses his lips together with a quiet strain of his jaw as she struggles to start, all before she trudges through with a tired sound. No fight, seemingly determined to rip the band-aid off now over tip-toeing around whatever it is she'd been dancing around.
Right she was to do so - soon as he hears she'd come looking for him, he visibly recoils with a sharp twitch, a draw of his shoulders, a duck of his head, the pinched wince that twists along his features tinged in regret. Guilt. But he keeps a hold of her hand all through it, giving it another squeeze as he breaks his stare to peer off to the side.
Claire doesn't even need to say it for him to know - the quake he feels under his fingers more than gives it away. She thought she'd lost him. That he'd died, left her all alone. Just like their parents - & she didn't even have a chance to say good-bye. It'd have been an old wound reopened, torn wide in the uncertainty of everything. Now it's his turn to flounder, sputtering mentally, teetering between the urge to explain himself, lunge into defensiveness in a way he tries to soften, before he deflates with a sag of his shoulders, focusing instead on smoothing small circular patterns into the meat of her hand, an attempt to ease away the shaking.
Processing everything that's shared, it's all clipped, a shaky staccato of information slid his way with an unsteady care, jerky. "Shit . . . that explains why things went dark with Jill. I couldn't tell the others what I was doing - had to cover it up in that stupid letter so Irons or whoever else was on Umbrella's payroll didn't get suspicious." He pauses, wetting along the seam of his lips with a pinched frown. All he can taste is blood. "We had a mission before things went to hell - also got caught up in an outbreak with Umbrella in one of their labs in Arklay. We tried to take it to Irons but that went nowhere, so . . . I went to Europe to try gathering more info."
He says nothing when she moves, shuffling a bit closer despite the aches & pains that echo through his own bruised & battered limbs. He can feel the beat of her heart where it rests, a sigh leaving him as he brings his other arm around to loosely keep the younger close. Shit . . . she was caught right in the heart of it. For fuck's sake . . . If she'd died there, he wouldn't have known. There wouldn't have been a way to - he'd still think she'd been back at college, goofing around, being a normal teen far from everything. He'd have been in her shoes, he thinks with another twitch of his nose, his hand curling into the worn leather of her jacket.
"You had to get it from somewhere. I never was the best rolemodel."
It explained how that Leon guy'd known her, how he'd found him so fast when Claire was in danger. He's thankful, but the simmering bubble of something fearful won't leave. He doesn't miss the way she clings tighter, a faint gesture, but one he returns with a gentle nudge of his head against hers.
"I'm sorry. I know it doesn't do much to make everything you went through go away . . . but I didn't . . . want you to get caught up in all of this." A sigh, one that bleeds off into a bitter, sad laugh. "I figured if I told you anything, you'd get put on their shitlist too." Or she'd come to help drag his ass out of whatever he'd gotten himself into. She was so headstrong sometimes - a trait they seemed to share. "Didn't help much, though . . . did it? Shit."
Some older brother. Every step taken to try keep things under control ended in something going wrong. Since the mansion, everything constantly felt like it'd been teetering on unstable ground. Nothing but a waking nightmare no amount of pinching or trying to wake from would help with. Combing a hand through dirtied hair, it's an effort meant to try soothing something down, unease, justified anger, anxiety - either for her or himself, at this point, exhaustion clouds it.
The only issue is he isn't sure he can promise she won't. Like it or not, he's locked into this, until the bitter end, whenever it comes.

“irons?” an involuntary shudder racks her - the butchery behind his office, the dead girl splayed against his table, the way he’d leered and spat at her the moment she identified herself “yeah, i - i ran into him. he’s dead, too.” an addendum she realises is unnecessary and somewhat infelicitous after the confession that she had watched raccoon city take its final breath before the death rattle. the glow of it stained her eyelids for a week. "sick bastard was on umbrella's paycheck." the racoon city police station had become a death trap, floors slick with the red of viscera and mangled flesh - she's glad he left before then, so he didn't have to see his friends - or the pieces of them. eyes shut tight, the warmth of him beside her does little in staving off the chill that has been with her since raccoon: "i didn't find jill, or barry - i don't know if they made it out before -" a breath, slow and steady, to buy her time to parse out all the rambling thoughts attempting to vocalise themselves. every day since that fateful september night had been spent looking for her brother - she has not had time to process it, much less talk to someone about it. "it's all gone, chris. raccoon's nothing but ash."
the worst thing to ever happen to her, aside from that late-night phonecall that had left her orphaned, had been the result of overconfidence when she was learning to drive. her skin was scaled with road rash, bike scuffed, a few sprains but nothing broken, a lecture from her brother. it seems childish now, after all she’s been through, and so, so long ago. nothing will ever fix the hole in her heart where raccoon once sat or the gnawing doubt that sherry will be okay after all she's been through. she will never forget the blood-stained barracks and dungeons of rockfort that spoke of cruelty long before the dead climbed out their graves that had once been unfathomable. worse than that, the promise she had failed to keep and the boy she’d told it to repeatedly, like a vow, a sacred oath : we’ll escape, together. it is a weight that she’ll carry within her forever alongside the knowledge that now, she’ll remember him longer than she ever knew him. this is the worst thing that has ever happened to her and no amount of late-night parties, no movie nights at burton's, no bandages and lotion or new, thicker leathers will soothe the wound.
there is so much to tell chris, but how can she? not without adding to his grief - the burden of the older brother one he’s spent half his life carrying already. part of her wants to, the bruised organ inside of her that wants to hurt him because this is all his fault, but like he taught her - like when she got up from her bike with skin sheared off - she has to soldier on. irregardless of emotions overlaid and tangled with one another, his presence is a comfort she has sorely missed. "oh, i'm definitely on their shitlist. maybe even higher than you. i blew up two of their facilities - no, three. does rockfort count? i'm counting it." her smile falters, ersatz chuckle drawn into a single, heavy sigh before she lifts her head - there it is, the redfield stubbornness.
"i don't know what happened between you and wesker, but -" there's an air of judgement in her tone, the curve of questions she wants to ask but they are lost in the recollection of those minutes in the hangar. they had felt like years, the blaring of the alarm penetrating through to her bones but her shaking - that had been the worry, the fear, that chris wouldn't make it in time. fighting wesker had been a stupid, selfish thing, masquerading as justice. "you picked him over me. over me!" despite her efforts, there's something acidic in her throat. if wesker had beaten him, if he had been too slow, then what? she can't fly a plane, and even if she could, she would have kept waiting. hoping. until the facility burned out, white on white, another nameless grave in the middle of the antarctic. the few times prior she'd seen wesker around the station when she'd stay at chris' place over the weekend, she hadn't liked him - what kind of weirdo wears sunglasses indoors? still, she hadn't expected him to throw her like a ragdoll in the middle of some fucked-up-torture island. she hadn't expected umbrella to be making monsters, either, though. it all feels so obvious, so suspicious in hindsight. "you promised! whatever you're going to do, you're not leaving me alone again. i'm coming with you. that's that."
