Jane: “Beautiful isn’t it?” Lisbon: “For a crime scene? Yeah.”

And in admitting that he has no idea what the gift is, Jane also opens up a bit more to Lisbon, lets her know that he can be at a loss when trying to read her, that his psychic skills don’t work with her and that she disempowers him and, what is very important, it’s okay for him. He likes being surprised by her, he enjoys the thrill of waiting, he doesn’t want to know what’s next or have a rational plan or know what lies ten moves ahead. And he values her sincerity. His “thank you” embraces everything, the times he wanted to tell Teresa how grateful he was but couldn’t or didn’t, a simple expression of something profound and overwhelming and also something that gives them both confidence.

Jane: “Fascinating, but not what you really want to talk about.” Lisbon: “I cannot believe my brother is a bounty hunter.” Jane: “There we go.”

Fire and Brimstone

It’s wonderful to see the change Jane is going through in S7. He’s closer to ‘normal’ but he’s still non-conventional, too. And there is no contradiction for that matter between the Jane we saw in seasons 1-6 and the image we get in season 7. He’s still himself but he’s better, sincerer. He feels comfortable to recognize his weaknesses, his lack of self-confidence and mistakes, to say ‘thank you’ and ‘I’m sorry’ to Lisbon. He is learning about life again, being happy again with the woman he loves, taking every step together and with her knowing about his feelings now. And Lisbon doesn’t need perfect or normal, because it’s not who she fell in love with in the first place, she only needs him to be open with her, which he’s striving to be, and their relationship is not about trying to change the other but change themselves for the other, protecting what they have.

“Huh? See? You called it, Lisbon. You called it!”

Lisbon: “It’s time.” Jane: “For what?” Lisbon: “We need to talk about Red John.”

“I love late night conversations, late night drives, late night snacks, late night kisses. Everything is better at night”.

Lisbon: “Would you want that? To hear what people say about you when you’re dead?” Jane: “When I’m dead, they can burn me in effigy or build a statue or forget about me completely. I couldn’t care less.” Lisbon: “You don’t mean that. Everybody wants to be remembered.” Jane: “Childish vanity.” Lisbon: “I want to be remembered.” Jane: “And you shall be, fondly, but you won’t care about it because when you’re dead, you’re dead, and until then… there’s ice cream.”

Jane: “I’m happy now. Just… Just let me be happy.” Lisbon: “Fair enough. Look, I’ll miss you, but I’ll leave you alone, okay?

Some things were there between them from the start. Jane needs to secretly make sure that Lisbon is alright or that he’s made her smile. It lets him understand he’s still alive because he still cares about someone’s opinion and reaction to him, and it’s obvious he enjoys Lisbon’s approval, the fact that she can’t resist his charm even when she’s grumpy, and that they can be so much in sync. He gradually recognizes to himself that she matters, and what she thinks of him does too. And it genuinely pleases him to be the one who makes her day brighter or settles things for her, to let her know that she means so much through tiny things.
