Tonight, there was an odd lightness to her step. Her fiery footsteps nearly skipped over the sandy tile. Her posture was loose, relaxed, and her expression held. . .

Could that be joy?

She hid it well. Her damnable teacher had trained her effectively to control herself, and on the surface she displayed only the same determined fierceness as ever.

But Chronos was eternal. He had seen, had recognized, had experienced every emotion known to gods or men, every nuance of what a heart could feel. He had watched every iteration of every lie or deception that could ever be told play out before him, again and again, on mortals and on the fickle gods alike.

She could not hope to conceal her moods from him. Especially not after he had come to know her so well, in these near-nightly encounters . One's behavior in conflict and death revealed a great deal about them, and he had seen her fight and die many, many times.

"Y'know, the older I get, the more I realize Mac was right," Richie replied, planting his hands on his hips and affecting a world-weary tone. He gazed out at the Calluna like he'd been the one to spend months working on restoring her.

"You're barely fifty," Connor pointed out, drumming his pen against the top edge of the clipboard.

"Right," Riche agreed readily enough, "Just about time for a midlife crisis, if I was mortal."

Connor snorted a laugh. "So you thought you'd invite yourself along on my new vessel's maiden voyage, is that it?"

Ingold had been worried from the start about Denton's drive to find answers about Oscar's disappearance. He'd been concerned about how far Denton would go, to discover the truth, and worried about his beliefs of what that truth might be. Even now that they knew what had happened, and that Denton had not been wrong about the nature of Hollow Elk, Ingold might still see Denton's reminiscing over the letters as a sign he still wasn't willing to let go.

Perhaps in some ways that was true. Regardless of what his companions might have to say about it, Denton would carry some level of guilt about Oscar's death for the rest of his life.

"You would have liked him a great deal, I think," Denton said quietly, reaching over to rest his fingertips on the paper, not quite touching Ingold's hand. "I regret very deeply that you will never meet." He was silent a moment, then pulled his hand back with a sigh and bowed his head. "You see the world the same way. You see the. . . the wonder in things."

That particular wording had not been strictly intentional, and his throat tightened slightly at his own phrasing. He hadn't forgotten Ingold's own words back in that mine, when Denton had been at perhaps his bleakest, darkest point.
