that anon needs to fuck off lol drawing a fictional character in a culture's clothing isn't """"appropriating"""" anything smh. if the anon finds it strange or uncomfortable maybe it's a them problem!!! you don't need to be of a culture to draw fictional characters in clothing of that specific culture and tbh i wonder what specifically is so "strange" about laena wearing algerian-inspired clothing. "I am fully willing to take responsibility and remove any work that makes a viewer uncomfortable!" you were incredibly polite to that anon but tbh some viewers will be uncomfortable with art you make and nothing you do can satisfy them + sometimes people just need to deal with being uncomfortable. i say this as another artist btw. anyway laena looks gorgeous and i loved that art
Hello! Thank you for your support :) I was also a bit puzzled by their use of the word 'strange.' In any case, I think this was a good opportunity to share my perspective on drawing inspiration from other cultures and how I approach it in my art!
Itβs strange to be appropriating Alegerian cultural clothing for a character that has nothing to do with Algeria and does not look Algerian.
Many asoiaf characters have long been depicted by artists in clothing inspired by, or directly borrowed from, real-world cultures. This, I think, is normal. Westeros is a fictional world, so to visualize it, artists naturally draw inspiration from the people(s), places, and cultures around them.
That said, Iβve seen criticisms that artists depicting certain charactersβlike the Martellsβin West Asian or South Asian attire could be seen as orientalist. I understand this perspective, and I firmly believe that haphazard or careless borrowing of visual motifs, clothing, or other cultural elements from a specific culture can unintentionally (or even intentionally) exoticize it. In my own work, I do draw heavily from cultures other than my own, but I make a conscious effort to research what Iβm borrowing and always note my references in my posts, so viewers can explore the original pieces and learn more about them.
Regarding Laena, yesβas a fictional character, she isnβt Algerian and has no connection to Algeria. I drew inspiration from the Tlemcen chedda because certain aspects of this dress, like the rows of pearls, aesthetically and thematically aligned with Laena as a character (a member of a house with strong naval power). Of course, if an Algerian viewer felt uncomfortable with the depiction, I would not post the work. In my art, I strive to honour and celebrate the cultures I draw from.
As someone from the West Asian/Caucasus region, Iβve seen some asoiaf characters depicted in clothing from my part of the world, and it has brought me nothing but joy and pride. I hope my own drawings can have the same effect, but if they donβt, I am fully willing to take responsibility and remove any work that makes a viewer uncomfortable!

I would love to draw Daenerys of Dorne in an Egyptian Assuit (tulle-bi-telli) dress (jalabiya). This beautiful textile, traditionally worn as a shawl or a dress, is created by hand-threading thin strips of metal, such as alloy, gold, or copper, into cotton or linen tulle. The metal is then cross-crossed and flattened into intricate geometric patterns, creating the fabricβs signature shimmer.
Iβve read that Assuit was originally part of Egyptian bridal wearβ imagine Prince Maron commissioning a piece like this as a wedding dress for Daenerys!
