Bird Behavior, The Deep Time Perspective

The behaviour of long-extinct animals remains an area of major public and scientific interest – the great perennial problem being that we’re always massively constrained, if not crippled, by a frustrating lack of data. Think of all the things we want to know, versus the things that we actually do know. In a paper recently published in Journal of Zoology, I aimed to review what we know about the behaviour of fossil birds (Naish 2014).

Simply knowing about the behaviour of fossil animals is neat and interesting. It allows us to better imagine the daily lives and lifestyles of given species, and thus firm-up hypotheses about their ecology, the timetables of their lives, and the selection pressures that might have acted on their evolution.

But it can also give us hard data on the antiquity or novelty of given bits of behaviour, and indicate which behaviours were inherited from ancestral groups, and which were or are specific to certain groups. It is often astonishing how little we know. Conversely, there are areas where key pieces of evidence, or key analyses, can allow us to make fairly detailed statements.

Where do we start in reviewing a subject as broad as the behaviour of fossil birds? (and keeping in mind that I’m keen not to re-write the paper I’m talking about). To start with, basic indications as to a fossil bird’s ecology and lifestyle can of course be determined by looking at its anatomy, the basic tenet ‘form leads to function’ being an important guiding principle…

"yeees <3" he smiled, staring up at him from his fluffy chest. he tucked his face into his neck again comfortably. he sighed contently and tilted his head. "you're so cute.." he whispered. "i hope you know that.." he added, kissing his chin softly.

"hehehe,so im told~"

"uuugh~!" he giggled and buried his face into his neck, nuzzling into his downy neck. he made a noise, something like a squeak, and brought a hand up to pet along the plush feathers. "ohhhhh my god so soooooft" he reached to take Tengus wings and wrap them around himself, so he could snuggle the other in.. well, relative privacy.

he giggled even more,purring louder "having fun~?"

WHO ARE YOU! the global game jam was this weekend so me and spiolex made a game for it. but we didn’t officially enter. and we took two days longer. the theme was “we don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are” so I think this was the obvious result. in our game you play as a lil masked figure but you don’t know which! their movement keys are assigned to random letters and you have to press them and watch the characters to guess which one you are! also it’s a gameshow and there are prizes! PLAY “WHO ARE YOU!” IN THE BROWSER (you’ll need the newest version of the unity plugin!) game made by pixelatedcowboy (me) and spiolex! music by ghostwater and james roach! (read through dev posts over on my dev blog! if you want!)

he smiled and nodded.. he was well aware of the plush feathers around his neck.. he was just, particularly shy about touching them.. he smiled when he mussed his own feathers, and hugged him tight, tumbling the two back onto the floor. "stooop being so fluffy <3" he nearly squealed. he nuzzled into him playfully, and sighed contently. "so fluffy <3" he added nearly burying himself in the others feathers..

he smiled and nodded, still teasing his feathers and cuddling into him. "well, if thats the case, then i'd give you all the affection i could." and he was already a pretty touchy guy. impulsively he touched anything that looked soft.. so naturally he wound up touching Tengu far too much. he smoothed his feathers down slowly, and let out a little giggle. "y'know.. thats one word i love.." he started.. "Feather... it just.. sounds funny."

he giggled himself and ruffled his feathers,a much fluffier wreath of down and feathers around his neck "prr,if you think about it,its also as pretty as it sounds as well"

Warning: He's so fluffy you're gonna die
