Huge huge huge splatoon raiders final boss spoilers below the cut
Oh boy
I really really wanted to love this game, and it came so so close to being a solid competitor for one of my favorite splatoon campaigns, everything was perfect, up until the final boss.
For reference I have only played the game on the hardest difficulty (mostly because I have played so much splatoon single player and I wanted a challenge)
The final boss fight just felt so underwhelming, the first bit with the rising water was great, it felt like a fun test of all the new platforming concepts the game had introduced along with a few new ones,
But then we get to the floating rock platform parts and it somehow felt way to hard and way too easy at the same time.
I think Nintendo took the wrong ideas from people praising splatoon 1's ending, it seems to borrow a lot of the stage design at least in its roughest form from there.
I somehow both felt constantly overwhelmed, getting hit with attacks that I can't face because I am having to try to deal with loose floaty physics instead of the tight controls that make most of splatoon good. But then when I do fail, it just teleports me to the next platform. I also multiple times died spamming X and waiting for deepcut to come so I could jump out of the enormous stingray (it felt like splat2 all over again) and they just would not come to my platform.
And then when I got to the actual fighting parts there were no stakes, I could die over and over and just respawn, I had a harder time with my first boss fight than I did with the final boss.
And don't get me started on how the last thing you do is just button mashing but worse. How the actual fuck does moving my thumb stick in a circle have anything to do with any of the skills the game taught me. The whole time that was happening I was just wishing for it to be over.
Overall I would have rather just had a cutscene and cut to credits at the end of floor 19 than had that "boss fight" leave such a bitter taste in my mouth after so much good was in the game up until then.
I love the rest of the game, there is so much amazing lore added to the splatoon world, and a ton of great depth added to deep cut (I finally feel like they have their own distinct personalities) but I really hope Nintendo realizes they messed the ending up and make an update that reworks it to give this game the ending it deserves
(this is all relating to gameplay btw, the story was great just overshadowed by being packed between bad gameplay and worse gameplay)
Also why the fuck doesn't the arcade machine have squid beatz Nintendo,
Give me back my rhythm game, I'm still pissed y'all never put it in splatoon 3
