saw a Certain cc say that xiao should have died at the end of perilous trail recently and i've been thinking about how a take like that must have been fuelled not by an actual understanding of the themes that his character is driven by (guilt and seeking freedom from it being the central one here imo) but by a vaguer, more aimless want for genshin as a whole to be grittier and darker (whatever that might mean) because what do you mean you wanted the character whose whole narrative purpose in that quest is to communucate that running away from your guilt and grief does nothing to truly fix it to succeed in killing himself. what do you mean you wanted the guy whose dynamics with the other characters in that quest revolve largely around an exploration of how self-sacrifice oftentimes hurts those around you far more than it helps them to do just that. what do you mean you wanted the character whose whole thing is that you can't always get to run away to be able to run away. and yeah, it's very easy to argue that depictions of the worst outcomes are often effective methods of communicating the importance of certain messages through the use of bad examples, but then i would argue that genshin as a whole has, at its core, always been about hope. so. yknow. if you want dead playables go play a fucking honkai game. i hear they have those in droves over there

we cannot let saying 'i love you' or kissing onscreen be the standard for correctly making a character canonically gay because some characters would never do that but are gay

more games with romance mechanics should have equivalent friendship mechanics and should stop hiding character lore behind specifically romance

Game where you max out affection or whatever but if you then make a pass at them they're like "WHAT" and you lose 30 points and they become deeply distrustful of all further gifts
