gunnthra’s constant sleepiness is a symptom of her depression. feelings of guilt, worthlessness and general emptiness are the other big symptoms, but she’s forced herself to smile through it. she’s the future queen of nifl, and her people need her to be strong, even if she doesn’t feel like she is. her real smile is a lot wider and her eyes light up- hrid and fjorm are able to tell best when gunnthra’s faking a smile.

gunnthra became so motherly towards her siblings because their mother was so busy in her role as queen. she never had any ill feelings towards her mother because of this, but she saw a role that needed to be filled and stepped up. she does quietly promise herself that she’ll be better than her mother when it comes to her own children. 

ylgr’s running leap knocks all the air out of gunnthra, but she’s able to recover enough to catch her, and she’s quick on her feet enough to turn her stumble backwards into a spin. gunnthra blows a raspberry on ylgr’s cheek when she comes to a stop, the noise loud and very unbecoming of nifl’s future queen. but around ylgr, gunnthra didn’t have to be a princess- or a queen. around her, she was something between a sister and a mother, but either way, she wasn’t a queen, and gunnthra treasured that.

gunnthra goes into hiding, yes, but she also stays in nifl with her people. she bides her time, is strategic - good qualities in a queen. when she dies, it’s sad because we’ve come to know her through summoning her and in the story, because she’s fjorm sister, and because nifl has just lost a pillar of strength. we didn’t even know hrid existed at this point!
