I hate how much meaning is lost every time you try to translate something into another language. There’s no way to translate the line “Og når i morgen får øjne / Og natten hviler sig / Skal vi for evigt måske samme vej” The direct translation would be “And when tomorrow opens its eyes / And the night rests / We shall go the same way, forever maybe”
But in that translation you completely miss that “får øjne” is a phrasing only used in the context of newborn animals opening their eyes for the first time and that “for evigt måske” is a child’s way of expressing uncertainty and hope.
And it reminds me of this quote by Ken Liu: “The best translations into English do not, in fact, read as if they were originally written in English. The English words are arranged in such a way that the reader sees a glimpse of another culture’s patterns of thinking, hears an echo of another language’s rhythms and cadences, and feels a tremor of another people’s gestures and movements.”
Hej alle! Hi everyone!
Today, I made some Danish pancakes. 🥞 It's interesting how different they are from American pancakes. I think I like them best with a little bit of sugar sprinkled on top. It just works. Also, this might be weird, but I love how they make the kitchen smell!
My fiance and I have been speaking Danish to each other more often, lately. I've definitely gotten a lot better at pronunciation and understanding written Danish, but my listening comprehension still needs a lot of work. It's probably my weakest skill at the moment.
Anyways, I'm thinking about what to draw next for this blog. I kind of want to make some short, illustrated stories! They could be just a few sentences long or something. Let's see what happens!
Vi ses! See you!

Jeg vil bruge denne blog igen! I will use this blog again!
I want to use this blog sort of like a diary to track my process with learning Danish. I will try to write an update every week.
My goal is to become fluent in Danish. Right now, I'm mainly learning through apps like Duolingo, Memrise, Drops, and also some books and YouTube channels. My fiance is a native Dane who also helps me, too. Speaking to natives is the most helpful.
In a few months from now, I’m planning on visiting Denmark for the first time! I’m so excited!
Vi ses! See you! 🧡
The Big List of Resources for Learning Danish
I plan on updating this as often as I come across something worthy of being added to this list. I’ll make a post to let you know that something new has been added so you don’t need to check back all the time.
