PlayStation employee builds a customer controller for gamer with cerebral palsy
Peter Byrne of South Amboy, New Jersey, has been gaming since he was a kid and had no issue with previous PlayStation controllers, but found the manufacturerâs latest edition to be troublesome.
Alex Nawabi, a retail marketer for PlayStation, responded immediately saying he would look into it, and after initially saying that the problem would be impossible to fix, the PlayStation employee mailed Byrne a care package which included a new modified controller and a powerful personal letter.

When able bodied people always act like you having to do a little extra is SUCH a big deal. For example, my bus had to stop a little further back than itâs regular drop off spot. The woman that helps me off is like âomg Iâm soon sorryâ âyouâre getting your exercise today, huh?â or âdo you want to wait until he can pull up farther?â (Keep in mind that this was a a small 20-30 feet, nothing drastic for me). No. I donât want to wait because itâs so insignificant. Everything is not a big deal. God forbid I have to walk a little farther. I walk around school all day. Chill.

One of the most frustrating things is that nobody teaches you how to be disabled.
Everybody teaches you how to try to get better, how to blend in, how to be as normal as possible and âlead a fulfilling life.â
But nobody says the important shit.
There is noÂ
âHey, fuck, youâre in a wheelchair and that just sucks balls, but you know what? You gotta fucking do it so hereâs some things to make life easier.â
Or âHereâs your new cane! Congrats! Hereâs how you use it. Stairs might fuck you up at first but let me show you how to make it easier.â
Or âHey, youâre autistic, thatâs cool. Let me know how I can help as your friend/family. I care.â
No one teaches you, actually teaches you about how to deal with daily life moving forward.Â
Once youâre disabled, once people know or once youâre injured or sick or diagnosed or whatever,Â
itâs all about pushing to get out of the chair, to stop using the cane, to blend in.Â
There is no help to accept your disability and move on with life working with it.Â
Itâs always a push to work against it in every way possible and that makes it even more exhausting.
God, this! Itâs always about trying to ignoring and deny our disability or giving up on us completely.Â
Itâs like disability is the ultimate failure, even if they wonât say it.Â
No one tells you how to make accommodations or what accessibility problems youâll face.
Disabled people can have quality lives.Â
But our lives are going to be different from abled peopleâs.Â
Our health is going to be different. And so should our healthcare.Â
But instead we are given the same treatment tailored to abled people, and that means it is going to fail us in so many ways.
This is also why âcureâ culture bothers me.Â
Because if thereâs no cure, doctors give up. Itâs like no cure = no available treatment, because why try if we canât get you back to abled standards?
[caps removed and spaces added for accessibility]
So. Much. This.
fuck this is so relatable right now
THIS
Hello All
School has once again been overwhelmingly hectic as I finish up my Jr. Year in high school, so thatâs why I havenât been on. Most recent CP update: I got new braces that Iâm excited to start wearing because the plastic is much thinner and the design is more sleek. I haven't gotten a chance to really wear them yet because I need to buy new shoes in a smaller size. Yet the little I have worn them, theyâve been kind of uncomfortable. I hope this is just the typical initial discomfort of new braces. Also, Iâm hoping to begin drivers training with hand controls soon. Iâm very nervous but also excited. I hope all is well on your end.Â
Love always,

'Disabled' beauty standards in an 'able bodied' world
In the same way the body positivity wave tells people to stop aiming to a magazine body type and how they are beautiful at any weight, we disabled people should stop comparing ourselves to able bodied beauty standards. Stop trying to look like/ pass for able bodied. Letâs consider other criteria rather than harmonic features as praised in the western concept of beauty. Uniqueness, oddity and difference are precious too.
Authorâs note: I am my own kind of beauty. I refuse to get frustrated because my legs will never look like Rihannaâs.
THROW ME YOUR THOUGHTS!
@perksofbeingdisabledÂ
Well, I think everyoneâs frustrated cause they donât have legs like Rihannaâs to be fair.
But I understand your point. I can only speak for myself so here we go.
So for the longest of times I would obsess over looking âdollâ like to âcompensateâ for my disability.Â
If I couldnât be normal with the was I walked than I wanted to be âPerfectâ everywhere else, anything that I could physically change I would.Â
But the thing is I could never be âperfectâ or pretty enough cause I couldnât accept my disability as anything other than ugly.Â
It was really unhealthy, not only physically but most importantly it took a tole on my mental health. Â
I think the point that we need to make is not that we need to see groups of disabled people together.Â
Itâs a more universal issue than that, we need the media to accept that there are tons of stunning people out there that donât fit into the beautiful mould but it doesnât make them any less beautiful.Â
I propose âthe beauty of existanceâ. If you exist, youâre beautiful just because of it.
When people think every disabled person is a saint
ability
abled people: can you do the thing??
disabled people: ... technically yes BUT it would hurt like hell/ruin my day/trigger a flare/exhaust me/be a fall risk/make me more sick AND THEN I would have to spend a day in bed/increase my dosage/cancel all my other plans/spend a week recovering afterwards
abled people: ... but you CAN do it

Raise your hand if youâre disabled and youâre still trying to unlearn the internalized ableism that makes you feel ashamed and inadequate for being unable to live up to the neurotypical, ablebodied norms.
When someone tries to make your diagnosis about them
yeah im disabled and my disability causes problems in my life but, for the record my life would be like a million times easier if the world around me and society in general tried at all to accommodate me and accept me and treated me as a human being. not an abled human being, but a human being with a disability and my own unique set of needs and struggles that deserve recognition and acknowledgement and support.
People are not saints for dating disabled people.
It doesnât take a special kind of person to love a disabled person. It just takes someone who treats disabled people like theyâre people (which should be the fucking norm).
Also, the mere fact of treating people like Such Amazing Sainted Human Beings for loving a disabled person and treating them right inherently normalizes treating disabled people badly or at least as âotherâ and unlovable. It sends the message that itâs going above and beyond to do otherwise and that it takes a special kind of person.Â
It doesnât. It takes a person who recognizes that people are people. Basically, it just takes a decent person. And hyping up a story to claim otherwise is absurd and harmful.
If you're able bodied you do not get to decide what accessibility is
In general able bodied people are likely to have their accessibility needs met by default. That doesnât logically entitle anyone to claim that no one else has any possible further accessibility needs, or that someone without specific needs would know what was necessary.
Accessibility hasnât been achieved when something is available to someone, or many people; it is achieved when that something is available to everyone.Â

Could you help me out here? I have cerebral palsy and go to school but no one seems to understand that after one day I am so exhausted and in pain but I'm expected to not miss any days, is it bad that I take so many days off to deal with the pain?
Not bad for your health, but itâs probably bad for your education. Youâre missing days where valuable knowledge can be gained and some schools have a policy where if you miss x amount of days or more, you need to repeat things. Have you talked to your parents/doctors/school about meds, mobility aids, or other accomodations? Iâd start there. ~Mx2
When a commercial uses a disabled actor for an âinspiration factorâ
[Gif of Schmidt from New Girl rolling his eyes and then smacking one hand to his forehead.]
And yet if they didnât use disabled people in their adverts, youâd be whinging about the lack of representation. You obviously donât care, you just want something to play the victim of.
Nope, Iâm still complaining about lack of representation. Inspiration porn doesnât represent the reality of disability. Itâs very much targeted at abled people.
And I think we all know how I feel about being told Iâm playing the victim.
