As a creator of musical productions and works, Michael Park knows that when you listen to music, there always exists the opportunity to make it yours. From identifying with a certain tune to declaring a song "yours", there is a certain ownership and connection we make with the notes that surround us.   

As a composer with a keen interest in speech, humour, and collaboration, Michael is co-founder of Art Song Lab and has written for choirs, singers, pianists, and chamber ensembles. Chuck Hamilton is a member of IBM’s Center For Advanced Learning team, in the role of Global Mentoring, Social Learning and Smart Play Program Leader.  His work focuses on the intersections of Learning, People and Technology with a particular emphasis on organizational effectiveness, sharing and change.

Chuck is also an Associate Professor for the Masters of Digital Media Program at the Center for Digital Media in Vancouver Canada.

Conducting a blind taste test each week, Chris ensures that only the best beans are being served to Revolver's customers for maximum flavour exploration. The extraordinary Dr. Shelley Gruendler is a typographer, designer, and educator who teaches, lectures, and publishes internationally on typography and design. She holds a PhD and an MA in The History and Theory of Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading, England and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University, United States.

Shelley has presented at TypoBerlin, ATypI, TypeCon, and How; has published articles in /Communication Arts, How, Slanted,/ and /Step/; and has judged international typography for /Communication Arts/ and Canadian book design for the Alcuin Society. When she is not traveling the world as the founding director of Type Camp International, she is proud to live in the Canadian Typographic Archipelago. As an entrepreneur, actor, writer, and producer, Kahlil Ashanti has mastered the Vancouverite skill of balance.  Best known for his critically acclaimed solo show, Basic Training, his multi-lingual work in theatre has earned him several awards including the NY Times Critics Pick and a Broadway Drama League nomination for Distinguished Performance. Basic Training has been optioned for television development by Barry Josephson (Bones, Enchanted, Men In Black) and Lowell Mate (Everybody Loves Raymond, Roseanne) and will be green-lit as a series this summer.

Recently selected for Cirque Du Soleil as a character actor, Kahlil is constantly searching for opportunities to be a part of life giving projects that are bigger than all of us. As co-founder of VC funded ReceiptNest.com, he found himself knee deep in the tech world, surrounded by people who wanted to tell their stories in compelling ways.

Those who peruse the hip-and-happening sidewalks of Main Street may recognize our next speaker. Stephanie is the founder and designer of Devil May Wear where she endeavours to make clothing better for our bodies, our world, and our wallets without sacrificing self expression.

Exploring the conflicts of sustainability and the challenges of running a local business has led her to realize that just making eco-friendly products isn't good enough. She believes that in order to have the option to buy sustainable goods, we must take care of our local economy or else we will exclusively be faced with the challenge of survival. Amal Graafstra does just that as one of the first and most well-known “do-it-yourself" RFID (radio-frequency identification) implantees in the world. Enthusiastic about unlocking new ideas and ways of interacting with the world, TEDxSFU is extremely excited to announce that Amal Graafstra, technologist, author, and double RFID implantee as well as Founder of Dangerous Things, will be speaking at this year’s conference!

Pioneer of the DIY RFID implantation movement, Amal has been helping hobbyists and biohackers explore RFID technology since implanting his first tag in 2005. Since then, he has authored the book RFID Toys, spoken at various venues including hacker clubs and universities, and has co-authored a peer reviewed research paper on the subject of DIY RFID implantee subculture for the ISTAS 2012 symposium on technology and society. Knowing first-hand the personal impact a good manicure, new haircut, or the perfect shade of lipstick can have on one's self-esteem, we at TEDxSFU are ecstatic to introduce Leigh Boyle as our next speaker!

Leigh is a pre-med student and a triathlete by day. She has also been on an incredible journey – while working with an NGO in Ethiopia, she saw the profound impact of providing aesthetic services to hospice patients. And so she began the Lipstick Project Society, an organization bringing light and love to patients in hospices and hospitals through professional-grade spa services. Any Vancouverite knows that a top destination in this city is our aquarium - our own little nautical Disneyland if you will. That's why we are extremely excited to announce that Dr. John Nightingale, President and CEO of the Vancouver Aquarium, is speaking at this year's conference!

A professional biologist and public educator, John has developed and operated some of the world’s best aquariums. He has guided the expansion of the Vancouver Aquarium's leadership in conservation and sustainability operations for twenty years, and as a result, the Aquarium is the greenest civic institution in Canada as well as the only one that operates without an annual subsidy from the Government. Jane Langton is an adult sexual health educator aiming to transform the views and conversations on healthy sexuality. Jane is committed to educating people about how general health and sexual health are intertwined, because according to the World Health Organization, people have "the right to sexual information and the right to pleasure". She embraces her inner awkwardness and slightly left-of-center sense of humour, and is currently working on her first book which she will complete sometime before she moves on to her next lifetime. We are pleased to begin this series with Igor, the CEO & co-founder of Mobify, a technology company focusing on enabling the adaptive web. Mobify provides developer APIs and cloud services for rapidly creating fast, responsive websites that work on all mobile devices. The platform is used by thousands of developers and customers like Starbucks, Threadless, Wired, Toyota and Beyond the Rack.
