In countries with universal healthcare, this is a non-issue during a strike. Our access to healthcare isn't tied to working. It's an unconditional right for each and everyone of us.

The US system screws workers over in oh so many ways.

I think The Creeping Man is the closest thing to science fiction ACD allowed himself to get within the Sherlock Holmes range. For him, fantastic plot elements, such as those found in this story, were mainly reserved for the Professor Challenger stories.
