Ted relaxed at the sight of Barty stepping into his wandlight. Of all the people to run into, Barty wasnât the worst scenario by far. Ted gave the boy a smirk as he approached. âMandrakes trying to escape?â he cringed at the idea- Ted was generally one for herbology, but mandrakes definitely had taken the spotlight in some of his nightmares. âThatâs a horrifying thought. I suppose your timing is charmed, then.â
His shoulders slumped at Bartyâs question. âRude of you to ask- you know Iâm an awful liar.â He and Barty had worked together enough that the other boy knew his biggest pitfalls: being strict with people and lying. They werenât close enough, however, that Ted wasnât a bit embarrassed when he admitted âI had to write my mum,âÂ

âBrilliant choice.â Charity mused back with a light grin. She was positive Ted knew she would never do something awful - just something bordering on civil disobedience. It wasnât really something worth being written up over. Especially when it was something she would have asked him to join in if it werenât for his prefect status.
âA bedtime isnât the worst. But itâs a curfew, they havenât figured out how to make us all go to bed at the same time just yet.â She winked before taking a quick look over her shoulder. âWell, you could always say you are patrolling. The castle does have a moreâŚunique aspect past dark.â
Ted laughed, maybe a bit too loudly for the time of night. âFair point. Think I just have a harder time with it after coming back from break- readjustment period and all that.â He loved Hogwarts, but he loved being home equally so. It always felt like break had him home just long enough to get used to being there again and then it was back off to school for another week of adjusting. No matter how old he got, he never managed to get used to it.
âPatrolling is a much better excuse than sending a letter to my mum, isnât it?â he laughed at himself. He never was good at thinking of things on the spot like that, not that it mattered. He didnât particularly care if anyone knew why he was out of bed, much less Charity. She wouldnât judge him. Tease him a bit, maybe, but thatâs what friends did.Â
âIs it lame if I admit that this is probably the first time Iâve been out of the common room this late? It is a bit...â he looked around, as if the shadowed walls would give him the adjective. âDifferent,â he settled on.Â
â ye mustâve heard some awfully tame ideas then â she shrugged , compared to a turn down gardner street in a shopping trolley ? this was nothing .  â am good ted , am no hungry â
Ted rolled his eyes. He wasnât a stick in the mud by far, but he was not a fan of intoxicated people. He was a pretty chill person, and most drunk people... werenât that. Like Mary, trying to slide down the bannister in a castle where some of the staircases moved. âYouâre really turning down cookies? Pretty sure thatâs illegal.â he teased. Maybe if he just kept her chatting long enough, sheâd forget about the bannister altogether? âCâmon, Mare, why donât we go for a walk instead? You can tell me all about your holiday.â
Andromeda stared at him, clearly uninterested.  âCharming.â She wrinkled her nose, not wanting him to be given the satisfaction of the inner workings of her mind.  âYouâre sure? Because it would be a real shame if it turned out any of them werenât.â Knowing the girls she roomed with, her dorm was likely to still be abuzz at this late hour. Not that she minded, but she would still rather be there with her friends than here talking to him. Â
âWe both know youâre not going to write me up, so would you rather I just went ahead and did it?â It wasnât that she was afraid of detention, itâs just that she knew Slughorn would probably make her clean out the potions supply closet again.  âOr would you rather come up with some excuse as to why this âletterâ couldnât have waited until morning?âÂ
Eyes narrowing, Ted frowned at Andromeda. âIâm too tired to tell what youâre implying, but I know I donât like the tone of it.â He didnât get why she was even bothering, prodding at him like this when theyâd so rarely spoken prior. He was usually decent at reading people, but he did tend to have a harder time reading Andromeda. It unsettled him a bit, when remarks like that could be anything from a vague comment to rile him up or a threat.
He didnât want to tell her. He wanted to write her up out of spite alone, detention be damned. Itâs not like heâd never had one before, but those times heâd actually deserved it. Tonight, though? âToday was busy and I forgot to reply to my mumâs letter from this morning. I couldnât sleep without sending it off.â Ted shrugged, âSheâs a worrywart. Didnât want her to wake up tomorrow without a letter from me.â He hated playing off his motherâs concern, but the last person he wanted to talk to about his muggle motherâs fears was a member of the Black family.Â
It wasnât unusual for Astrid to be up and about after curfew. She either couldnât sleep and needed to do something to take her mind off of the fact that she couldnât sleep, or she was up to no good. That evening, it was the latter. Astrid never did anything to hurt people but she wanted to pull a prank on some of the slytherin boys.Â
She was on her way back to the common room, her prank laid in place for the morning, when she bumped into Ted. The blonde raised an eyebrow as she saw him and she couldnât help but laugh at the sound of his voice.Â
âAre you sure that you want to know the answer to that?â Astrid asked with a raise of an eyebrow and a laugh. âBecause I think the more interesting question is what are you doing out at this time?â She tilted her head as she looked up at Ted, âI mean - since when have you been so willing to break the rules, huh?âÂ
Ted deflated at Astridâs response- half from relief it was her, and half because it definitely meant she was up to something again. âYouâre right, question retracted. I donât want to be an accomplice.â he chuckled. At least now he had someone to walk back to the common room with. Astrid was probably better at sneaking around than he was, anyway.Â
âCome on, Iâm not that much of a stickler.â he insisted. âThereâs no fascinating reason, though, really. I just had a letter for my mum and some pent up energy, so I figured Iâd take a walk and send it now so itâs there for the morning.â Ted shrugged. He kept no secrets from his parents, including what was going on in the wizarding world and he knew his parents were more worried about him than usual. It wasnât much, but he made sure to send letters as often as he could.Â
âSo, is whatever youâre up to finished? Want to walk back to the common room with me?â

âNone of your bloody business.â Corban shot back, voice aggressive and attitude testy. âIâm..patrolling.â While he didnât enjoy being a prefect in most ways, there were some perks. Like on the job naps, picking up girls by getting them out of write ups, being able to roam without many restrictions. Unless you werenât mildly careful about it, he supposed. âAnd what are you doing out of bed at this hour, tonksy? Have a little nightmare?â He mocked, walking slow ( at his very own pace ) towards the hufflepuff.Â
Ted flinched back a bit at the tone of Corbanâs voice. He rolled his eyes at the older boyâs answer- Ted didnât pay enough attention to the patrol schedule to know if it was a lie or not, but all the same. âI feel like if you were actually just patrolling, you wouldnât snap have to snap at me about it. Just saying.â he shrugged. Ted didnât want to fight with Corban, especially when he could justly write Ted up for being out of bed after hours. And yet.Â
âNo nightmares yet, but Iâm sure Iâll have some later with your face fresh in my mind, Yaxley.âÂ
âDo you actually want to know?â Charity questioned, teasing just a bit to leave a warning for her prefect friend. As someone who was light of foot, getting caught in the night wasnât ever much of a concern for her. There was plenty of practice from being coerced from her room in the middle of the night by friends who wanted to walk the bridge, or take the tubes towards the very edge of the river along the ports. Just previously, she had found herself near the entrance of the Slytherin dungeon and made her way gently up back through the stairs and halls. âWhat are you doing out so late? Youâre usually the good one.â
Ted let out a laugh at Charityâs retort. âNow that you mention it, youâre right. The less I know, the better.â He always liked Charity, and he found their personalities clicked more often than not. But he didnât want to have to write her up for any prefect-unapproved activities she may have been up to before heâd bumped into her.
âOi, Iâm still the good one. I just maybe donât approve with giving sixteen year olds a ruddy bedtime as much as I agree with all the other rules I uphold.â Ted said indignantly- all seriousness lost when he chuckled again. Maybe he was just a garbage prefect, when it came down to it. âI just had a letter home to send. Figured since I was awake, I might as well mail it so it could be there by morning.âÂ
Hestia had really been wanting it. She couldnât sleep, couldnât get her thoughts off of it. Thatâs when she decided to risk it. Coming out of the kitchens with an small basket full of blueberry muffins, she thought she was in the clear. Then a light was on her and she froze in fear, clutching the muffins to her chest and wincing. When she realized it at least wasnât a professor, she let out a puff of air. Keeping her voice low as well. âMe? Youâre the one with the light.â Then she saw it was Ted and groaned a little, a small look of please have mercy on me, crossed her eyes. âI really wanted these. I got too full at dinner, and yes i realize, âis this something you should be sneaking out for, tia?â well, my answer is yes. I needed one. It was haunting my dreams.âÂ
Moving closer and batting her lashes a few times, she playfully offered a muffin. âA muffin in exchange for not writing me up? Plus, youâre up too buddy. I could ask you the same thing!â
Ted lowered his wand, recognizing Hestiaâs voice. âI trip over my own feet in the daylight, you think Iâd get on well in the dark?â he half-joked. His eyes widened at the basket of muffins he saw her holding as his light lowered. Ted didnât have much of a sweet tooth, at least not like many of his classmates - but muffins were another thing.Â
He chucked at Hestiaâs explanation. Muffins were a valid reason to be out of bed if there ever was one. Maybe more valid than his own reason. âWell, if they were haunting you, perhaps I should write them up instead.â he teased.Â
âHow about a muffin and you not ask me that and weâll call it even?â
Andromeda was heading back to the Slytherin common room after one of her many late night âmeetingsâ, if one could even call them that. It was not unusual for her to be out of bed at this late hour, she had become rather adept at sneaking around over the last few years. As she saw a light coming from the opposite end of the hall, she jumped back, crashing into a rather old set of armor. Pulling her dressing gown tighter around her to hide any trace of what she had been doing, she squinted in the direction of the voice. Â
âI suppose I could be asking you the same question, Tonks. Donât your little first years need a bedtime story?â Andromeda snarked at the boy. This was not the first time the two had run into each other in the halls, and she was certain it wouldnât be the last. She knew that they could each easily send the other to detention for a week for a late night offense, but she also knew that he preferred to stay away from punishment.  âWell?â The look on her face was easily read, even in the dimly lit hall. Â
Heartbeat regulating, Ted lowered his wand at the sound of the familiar voice. âAndromeda?â he asked, maybe a bit redundantly. It was late and he was tired, sue him. âMy first years are all in bed, Iâm sure. Sweet of you to ask, though.â everyone knew how passionate Ted was about looking out for his younger housemates and, despite the amount of people who teased him, it wasnât something he found any shame in.
He wanted to say something witty, or just write her up and be done with it so he could go to bed. But Ted was always better with words on paper, and he knew even if he could gather the courage to write her up heâd only end up in detention right beside her. âIf you really want to know, I was sending a letter.â Ted admitted, shrugging.Â
â a mean you sayin' a shouldnât try sliding down the bannisters after three firewhiskys just makes me wanna try it even more , â
Ted, eyes wide, shook his head furiously. âThat is possibly the worst idea Iâve ever heard.â Sure, it would probably be hilarious- but she could also easily fall to her death. The stairs in this castle were nothing to fool around with.Â
âWe could go have some cookies instead? My mum sent me back with a whole batch and Iâm willing to share as long as you promise you wonât slide down the bannister.â

Ted knew it was too late to be out of bed, especially for a generally rule-abiding fellow like him. But he couldnât help it, and it wouldnât take long to get to the owlery and back to his dormitory. Students snuck out of bed often enough - he should know, he caught enough of them on his prefect rounds - it didnât have to be a big deal.Â
Getting to the owlery and mailing his letter went off without a hitch, much to his relief. It wasnât until he was headed back to the Hufflepuff common room that he heard something from behind him. Ted jumped, clutching his wand tightly, pointing the light at the end in the direction of where the sound had come from.Â
âBlimey, you scared me half to death!â he whispered urgently, âWhat are you doing out and about at this hour?â
( cis male | he/him/his | jordan fisher ) ââ isnât that EDWARD âTEDâ TONKS? yeah that is him, sitting there at the HUFFLEPUFF table with those other SIXTH YEARS. when sybill looks into that crystal ball of hers, she sees dog-eared muggle poetry books, a broken watch, a bouquet of daisies, unruly dark curls, hands with crooked fingers, bloody knuckles, and pastel painted nails, & an unwavering broad smile. anyway iâve heard heâs pretty CARING, OPENMINDED, and DETERMINED. apparently heâs âFOR THE LIGHTâ and MUGGLE-BORN, but iâm sure thatâs not related.
that some people are bornÂ
On the morning of April 23rd, 1960 Edward was born to Ainsley and Duncan Tonks in a small town in Scotland. It was there that they lived as Edward, swiftly nicknamed Ted, grew up.
His mother taught literature at the local college, and his father ran the flower shop in town. Ted spent most days in the shop with his father or reading with his mother.
Despite his love for books, reading did not come easy for Ted. His parents dedicated most of their free time working with him to sound out words and spell. It was hard work, but once he got the hang of it he fell in love. His favorite thing was going on adventures with exciting characters, much more fantastic than he could ever dream of being.
The Tonks family lived a quiet, happy life. They didnât have much money, but they didnât struggle either - a happy medium.Â
Tedâs social life, however, left much to be desired. He never quite fit in at school or with the neighboring children. They always found something to pick on him for, be it his books, his quiet nature, or his sometimes painted nails. Sometimes they even teased him because his father was a florist. Ted didnât quite get it, but he had never been the judgmental type. Some of the meaner boys threw choice words at him, ones he had never come across in the books he read.Â
The teasing got to him at first, but his mother explained it as ignorance- a word he did understand. He was different, she said, but that didnât mean he was less than. She gave him books about heroes overcoming adversity and small-mindedness, and he knew he could, too.Â
to give more loveÂ
Ted wasnât at home when he showed his first sign of magic. He was ten and out playing with one of the few boys from school who was kind to him, Oliver. They got on so well because, like Ted, Oliver was different. He enjoyed playing pretend and reading poetry more than football, and let Ted tangle flowers in his hair. Sometimes Oliver even kissed him on the cheek when Ted gave him flowers or let him borrow books.Â
One day, some of the older boys from their school watched one of these exchanges- Ted handing over some flowers he had picked, and Oliver giving him a peck on the cheek. The other boys apparently did not get butterflies in their stomachs when this happened like Ted did. They thought it was funny, or bad, or maybe both - Ted didnât exactly have time to analyze as the older boys came over and shoved them to the ground, proceeding to pick on them. Ted and Oliver didnât make fun targets for bullying, though, not ones to fight back but instead wait for it to be over.Â
When they left, Ted hugged Oliver as he cried for a little, then helped him to his feet. âOh, no.â Oliver frowned, looking down at the forgotten flowers Ted had given him. They were crushed, petals torn and sad. Ted picked them up, wondering if he could save them. They didnât deserve this- none of them did.Â
âIâm sorry, Oliver.â Ted told him. He was going to suggest picking more from his mumâs garden on their walk home when Oliver gasped, eyes widening. Ted followed his friendâs gaze to his hand where the limp flowers were... coming back to life?Â
The boys stared at the flowers for a few moments, then blinked at each other. Ted held the flower out to him, but Oliver backed up. His eyes were less curiosity and more fear.Â
That was the last time he and Oliver played together, and the first time Ted truly felt like a freak. Needless to say, he and his magic didnât get off on the right foot.
Hogwarts was different. It was better. He wasnât a freak, at least not in the way he had been ashamed of since that day with Oliver. But the Wizarding World had a whole new set of prejudices against him, and Ted was done taking the docile approach.Â
Ted was muggle-born and proud of it, and no one could take that pride away from him. Being muggle-born just meant it was easier to tell who his real friends were, because they stood by him through the bullying and sneers. As Ted got older, he began sticking up for himself and others, no longer cowering at the feet of the small-minded and ignorant.Â
He was as kind and gentle as ever, but he was working more each day to add brave to that list, as well. With the situation getting worse each day, Hogwarts was beginning to feel like a boiling pot. Ted knew the time was approaching for him to step into the shoes of the heroes heâd always read about.Â
