Recorded in 1977 for Kentucky television, this is New Grass Revival with a rare treat â Sam Bush on fiddle (He won more than one Junior Fiddle Championship as a kid). The song is one they got from Peter Rowan, who would go on to record it with both Old and In the Way and The Nashville Bluegrass Band. This is âThat High Lonesome Soundâ.

No instagram filters will turn this into a good photo but the instrument itself was quite unusual - a 4ft wooden pole tucked into an old sailor's boot, decorated with jingling metal bottle tops. Played not only by stamping it on the floor but also hit with a notched stick to make guiro type sounds. Seen in action at Looe folk club this evening. A riff inspired by an encounter with the lydian mode during a fiddle workshop led by Neil McMahon. With the sharpened 4th, the lydian mode is bright but complex in character, apparently it is not used much in Cornish music but is associated with some Christmas tunes.
Soon after writing the riff I was driving past the Fal estaury in the dark light of the early dawn and noticed the mist hanging over the water. I associated both with the creation story - the spirit hovering over the face of the deep.
The song is not quite like anything I've written before and is unfolding very slowly but watch this space!
