Keep calm and carry on.

Matthew really needed this hug, he leaned into his father figure’s touch and let out a soft sigh. 

Matthew felt a little bit weird asking this, but it’s been bothering him for a long time. “This might sounds stupid but… are you proud of me?”

A soft smile broke across his face as he felt Matthew melt into his touch.

Oh, how he had missed the days when he was surrounded by his adorable children.

He felt Matthew’s words before he heard it, with his attention focused on the Canadian and his voice sent little vibrations through their touching bodies.

“Hmm...?” The question caught him off guard, but he could detect the hesitation in Matthew’s timid voice; he seemed anxious.

“Of course I do, love. You are my pride and joy. We have been through thick and thin, dreams and nightmares, blood and tears. I can’t be more blessed to have you by my side, Matthew.”

Ena’s grin was down right mischievous. Just based on his reaction to her statement she had a good idea what happened.

“Oh come on, you can’t hide anything from me, I know something happened and I’ll keep pestering you until you tell me.”

It’s hard to see how she’s the older sibling when she does stuff like this and act like she’s a little sibling trying to blackmail an older sibling.

She would never let him live this down if she caught wind of what transpired the night before. 

Knowing how persistent Ena was, he regretted not going into hiding before she spotted him. It was times like this when he wondered if he was supposed to be the mature older sibling. 

“Stop right there! I-I have nothing to tell and that’s final! Nothing you do will work...” Eyes wide, he had unknowingly put up an imploring look in front of his sister. 

He would never admit it aloud, but he was scared of the world knowing it.

“W-What details?” He jumped as he heard his sister’s tease. He tried to stop the blush that was creeping upon his cheeks, but he knew he failed as soon as he felt the heat on his face.

“What’s wrong, lad?” Matthew might have already stood on his own on the international stage, but Arthur would never allow himself not to come to his children’s side when they needed him. 

Pulling Matthew closer, he started to pet the Canadian’s hair as he tightened the embrace. “Please, can I be of any help to you, Matthew? I hate to see you sad, poppet.”

The fact he thought she hated him and wanted him God made her sob harder. She never wanted him to think she hated him, she wanted him to know she was tough because she cared about him and didn’t want him to be defenseless against anyone.

“I never wanted you gone. I almost never let you out of my sight because I worried someone would hurt you when you couldn’t defend yourself.” There was many times she was attacked while traveling by herself and she worried all the time that Arthur would suffer the same fate.

“I understand if you hate me, I should have actually showed you I cared instead of continuing to be tough on you. If…” She took a shuddering breath. “If you never want to see me again I understand. But please know I’ll always care about you…”

Nothing could be further from the truth regarding his perception of Ireland. 

“I... I didn’t know...” His voice was soft and hesitant, no longer sure of how to act around his sister. “I thought you wanted me gone forever, so I detached myself from your life. I... I didn’t know you were trying to look out for me.” Did the same apply to Scotland and Wales? He swallowed a lump down his throat. Did he pushed his own family away unwittingly?

Hate. 

Hate had ran rampant in their bonds and ties over the years, bringing them centuries of woes and sorrows, blood and tears. 

It had been blocking their path towards reconciliation for long. Too long

“I was... scared. Terrified, even... I thought you have abandoned me and seen me as nothing more than a nuisance.” Taking a deep breath, he used all his courage to stare at Ena’s tear-filled eyes as he made his admission as honest and sincere he could ever be. “If anything, you should be the one to hold hatred and contempt over me. I have never hated you, Ena.” It had been long since he had said her name, but it was uttered out with tenderness.

Arthur slowly rested his left hand upon Ena’s back as he started rubbing small, soothing circles. It was a peculiar feeling to be so close to the sister that he had been fearing for his entire life; instead of fighting, he was drying her tears like he had done so many times with his colonies. Between the pets and hugs, his gestures were gentle. The younger nation had allowed room for Ena to shrug him off, but he had expressed his only goal was to offer her comfort as he enveloped her in a tentative hug. 

“It does not excuse what I have done, no?” He whispered as he held Ena loosely. “If it can ever make you feel better, if I can ever make amends in some way... berate me in any way you want. Treat me in the way I deserve, but please stay... I want to see you safe and sound.” 

“And who are you to say that?” Arthur snorted. It wasn’t the first time he had been scathingly patronised, and he wasn’t fazed by it. He knew he was far from being a saint, and he had long come to term with that fact.
