This Starlet's L.A. Loft Is Every Millennial's Dream Apartment
The downtown L.A. loft Carlson Young shares with her fiancĂ©, musician Isom Innis of Foster the People, is a mirror into the coupleâs artful temperament and winsome Southern charm. Together, Young and Innis call their DTLA roost home between sporadic bouts of travel, with Young filming Scream in New Orleans for months at a time and Innis touring on the road with his band.
âIt was the first time I had ever even had a roommate,â Young confides of moving into the loft space last November. âEverything has sentimental value,â she tells us of the dĂ©cor. Young's imaginative mix of spirited vintage and modern details makes for an entirely grown-up and alluring abode. The charismatic, laid-back aesthetic proves a fitting echo of the dynamic couple's singular taste and distinctive personalities. He cooks. She Postmates.Theyâre keeping it real. Together, theyâve mastered color-blocking paint and gallery walls. Step inside.
âItâs not really that interesting of a story. We met through mutual friends,â Young says of her introduction to Innis, quickly adding the romance itself was more atypical. âThe first night that we met, we fell in love. It was love at first sight. Literally, the next day we were planning our wedding and talking about what we were going to name our children. It was not one of those, texting for a week, then we go away, and now weâre dating sort of things. It wasnât like that.â
Three years later, the pair is engaged and settled into their colorfully curated downtown digs. âOur place is relatively all stuff we acquired together. Most of it is vintage,â says Young.
Young designed the loft with a little help from her professional friends, hiring interior design tastemakers Joyce Pickens and Caroline Walkup to style the place out in a matter of months. âCaroline dates one of the band members. Iâve always been a huge fan of her work. She was a no-brainer. Joyce is one of my dearest friends from Texas,â says Young, a native of Fort Worth. âIâm the luckiest lady in the land to have had the help of these amazing friends.â
âWe had about three months to get everything they way I wanted it before leaving to shoot Scream in New Orleans for six months,â she tells us of the impressive design timeline. âIt was really important for me to get the loft in order. I wanted Isom to have this dream workspace while I was away. It was such a load off to get it all designed, then go to work and not have to worry about it from a distance.â
The space is peppered with bold modern art, collected antiques, and thoughtful personal accents from coupleâs travels. âThe color-blocking in the green was something weâd been playing around with,â she tells us. âWe thought about a few different shades of green and ended up going with two. Itâs so elegant, and I love the way both shades play off the Eastern Building out the window,â she says, pointing out the iconic skyline view.
âIsom is practically always in the studio,â says Young. Citing their home as their favorite place to work. âHe is hyper-focused. He sits down at the computer and doesn't look up for eight hours. That leaves a lot of time for me in the apartment.â
âI usually just get my laptop and write next to him in the couch,â she adds. âI love the space because we can both work all day. Itâs the greatest spot for that.â
âMy decorators definitely pointed me in the right direction,â Young says of the design process. âThey wanted the loft to feel grown-up. My last place was in West Hollywood and a completely different vibe. I moved in there when I was 18. It was sort of a mix of everything you love when youâre 18. I had a lot of Lucite.â she says. âWhen youâre growing up, youâre like, Lucite is the coolest thing ever! Â We were steering away from that more adolescent direction to create something elevated that still had my edge and our eclectic taste.â
Young opted for mostly vintage furnishings and accessories with a playful mix of modern art and clean contemporary accents. âThereâs lots of good vintage around L.A. I love The Hunt and Sunbeam Vintage,â she says.
âAll of the art in the house has kind of a weird story,â says Young, walking us through the impressive gallery wall.
âThe painting above the piano is by Isomâs sister, Isabella Innis. We commissioned it. Isom wanted something black and white,â says Young. âItâs a little more bold than what she usually does. She works a lot with color.â
âThe big white painting in our bedroom is something I made myself.â Young printed the lyrics of a favorite song on an oversize canvas, creating the subdued, stark white counterpoint to matte black walls and bold metallic hardware. âI kind of did my own thing on it and white-ed it out,â she says of the work. âI wanted it to have a lot of texture.â
âI love to read. I have a serious collection of coffee table books. Iâve been acquiring over years,â says Young.
The actress credits her designers with the adept blend of youthful exuberance and grounded soulful detail executed throughout the space.
âI loved working with them in tandem since they have such different points of view,â says Young. âAesthetically, they were able to find a cohesion that I think is amazing. I love to look around and see both of their styles working together.â
When asked after her impressions of moving into the thick of downtown L.A.âs burgeoning art culture, Young says, âI would be lying if I said it wasnât a shock at first. Itâs super grimy, but it has the most creative vibrant energy. Itâs beyond up-and-coming.â
âYou walk out the door itâs full-on city living,â says the Texan. âI think thatâs kind of hard to find in L.A. You go to New York for that lifestyle. I always thought I would be living in New York, yet Iâm happily settled in L.A. I feel like downtown has kind of bridged the gap for me.â
At first glance, one wouldnât guess the most challenging detail of the space is an innocuous suspended antique chair. âI think it looks pretty nice now, but putting up that hanging chair up was a beyotch!â laughs Young.
âIt literally took five men and five days,â she says of the arduous process. âThey had to drill into the ceiling of the Orpheum Theatre. I think it was 20 feet up or something insane like that. Itâs a very heavy vintage chair that we painted. It was super old, and the whole process was vv expensive and vv time-consuming. Iâm glad it looks good now.â
Dramatic, architectural statement lighting from Edison bulb sconces to exposed wire chandeliers pepper the space with sophisticated verve.
âLighting is something I always notice in other peoplesâ homes,â Young confesses. âWe wanted to make bold statements with lighting.â
Young is unabashedly candid when we inquire after her favorite meals to cook at home. âItâs more of a Postmates situation downtown,â she laughs. "I would really love to say that Iâm this amazing cook. Maybe one day I will be. As of now, I am absolutely worthless in the kitchen.â
âLuckily Isom is a fantastic cook,â she adds. âHe makes me really delicious avocado toast on the regular.â
The crowning jewel of the kitchen space is a massive marble island ideal for entertaining.
âWe chose the island before we had made any bigger decisions about the space,â says Young. âI couldn't find anything that was the right size. Itâs such a generous amount of space. I eventually landed on an industrial, stainless steel restaurant island. We installed a slab of white marble on top and wallpapered the side of it,â she tells us of the striking DIY moment.
âYou canât always do much with wallpaper when youâre renting,â she adds. âWallpaper is the greatest thing in the world!â
Young majored in creative writing and poetry at USC. Isom studied at Berkeley College of Music in Boston. Both landed in L.A. in pursuit of their perspective artistic careers. âIsom gave me a vintage typewriter for my birthday,â says Young. The antique is proudly displayed among art books and the lasting remnants of her aforementioned Lucite fixation. âI write a lot of poetry,â she says, âI love to write on a typewriter. The sound is so calming.â
Considering Innisâs musical prowess, we were keen to comb through the couple's vintage record collection.
âWe listen to a lot of Prince, a lot of Radiohead,â offers Young. âWe saw The Police the other night, so weâve been on a big Police kick. We sort of go in and out of retro vibes at home and super-modern stuff like Panda Bear.â
Retro-meets-super-modern vibes appear to be the perfect frequency for the duo on the rise. Stay tuned.
Catch Young in episodes of Scream streaming this month on Netflix.

Carlson Young for www.mademoisellerobot.com.
When she isnât studying Creative Writing at USC, Carlson Young is mostly getting covered in fake blood on the set of Scream, the MTV show where she plays high-school queen Brooke Maddox. I met Carlson on a sunny morning in Los Feliz to talk about her style, beauty tips and of course cats!
If I was to describe your style today, I would say preppy, cool school girl vibes. Is this your usual attire?
Yeah, totally!
Do you change based on your mood? How do you decide how to get dressed in the morning?
I never try to go for the school girl style, but I always somehow end up dressed like that. I think it is because I wore a uniform from age 5 to 18 so it sort of imprinted on my mind! I wear a lot of black and white. I am not so into brights.
Do you think your style changed when you moved to L.A.?
Yes, definitely. When I moved here I was 19 and I was still in that high school mood of wearing what your friends are wearing. I have always been attracted towards classic pieces, but sometimes I just want to be trendy, you know! Thatâs why I like Opening Ceremony, they have great brands there and I always find something I like when I visit.
Name three favourite stores in Los Angeles
Opening Ceremony, Acne, A.P.C.
Online?
NeedSupply â I am always on there. ASOS â they have a petite section⊠Over the course of my life Iâve spent way too much money on alterations because I am so small! Then of course I also like Net-a-Porter, Shopbop and all the usual suspects.
Does your character (ndlr â Brooke Maddox in Scream) influence at all the way you dress in your day to day life?
Absolutely not! On the show, Brooke is a suburban high school girl. I donât know where she shops, but I am not shopping there (laughs)! The costume designer is really awesome and asks my opinion on Brookeâs outfits, I get a say in what she wears. It is really cool to see how things translate on screen. I wouldnât wear anything Brooke wears in the show, but I love how it makes her look on screen.
Whatâs your beauty regime?
I need my sunscreen, I am a pale, pale flower! I burn so easily and I am really afraid of the sun. It is a new thing though, when I was growing up I was always pretty tanned, but not anymore. I always also need mascara⊠and eyeliner⊠and brows⊠and concealer⊠and everything!!! I love make-up!
Whatâs the craziest make-up style youâve ever tried?
Well⊠Most peopleâs adventurous make-up routine is my everyday! I just like to make my eyes look like a raccoonâs, the smokier the better.
A good smokey eye is the one thing Iâve never mastered, are you really good at it?
I got you girl! I was the girl growing up who would do all my friendsâ make-up. I love doing make-up.
What do you never leave the house without, make-up wise?
My Clé de Peau Concealer Stick. It is the best concealer on the planet. I think even if you look horribly tired, it makes you look amazing. I also use theirfoundation.
Whatâs your skincare routine in the evening?
I do Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, a little bit of moisturiser. I also LOVE Coconut Oil.
What about your hair, what do you use?
Oribe Texturising Spray.
Are you a natural blonde?
I had white hair until I was about 12, then it turned mousey. So now I get it highlighted every 4 months or so. I have a great girl here in L.A. who makes maintenance really minimal and it just grows to an ombré style. My hair has been growing like a weed since I stopped colouring it because it is so much healthier.
Do you have a favourite nail salon? Or do you do your nails at home?
I just go to the little hole in the wall near my apartment, in DTLA⊠They do a great job. I am a nail biter, so I have to have my nails done all the time.
When did you get your first cat?
I got my cat Frances when he was a little kitten. I was 19. Iâd been here for about a year and I decided to treat myself to a little buddy, so I got Frances. I found him on Craigslist. He was in Bakersville, CA so I drove over there, looked at him and he was so precious I snagged him right away.
Then we had a little addition to the cat family a couple of months ago. While we were shooting in New Orleans, I woke up one morning and I got a cat! She was with me in NOLA while I was shooting for three weeks, then my fiancé took her back home. Her name is Arwen and she is an elf princess. She is a dream, she is so sweet.
Are you going to get another one?
I would, but I canât.
I swear I will end up with 55 cats if I stay in L.A. for a while!
In high school, my senior prediction was that I was going to become a crazy cat lady. I swear, it is even in the yearbook!!
Did you have pets growing up? Did you already have a cat obsession?
No, my parents hate cats⊠Iâve always loved cats though. My high school sweetheart bought me a really cute white cat. My mum wouldnât let me keep him. His name was Christopher, he was so cute.
