I’m planning on teaching government to 12th graders in a rather high SES school... do you have advice on how to teach rich kids about poverty? Specifically, how “why dont they just get a job” isn’t the answer?

We have so many incredible History and/or Social Science edchums on Tumblr, it would be a disservice to even attempt to answer this question as an ELA teacher.

Have students complete a budget as if they were living at/below poverty. Create a scenario where they have multiple jobs and still struggle to make ends meet. Have them go to the grocery store and “shop” for foods that would be able to be purchased using only food stamps. Just a few ideas. You certainly won’t get every student to stop saying “get a job” but you should at least open a few peoples minds.

Okay I lied, I have one more.

What seemingly normal thing in teaching and education can you not get behind or wrap your head around?

For me, it’s the question about attention getters. I do not understand “call and response” stuff and will never do it in my classroom. It creeps me out. No judgement if you incorporate that into your classroom, I just personally don’t get it.

Formalized cooperative learning and grading students “roles”. Why assign roles in the first place? Shouldn’t all students be recorders, encouragers, speakers?

Yes, I understand that students need to learn how to do all these things, but in my experience when roles are assigned (forced) the activity never works as well as when I simply say these are the “roles” you should all be practicing.

Maybe it’s because my school is very CL based and students are already familiar, or they are all high schoolers, or they like the fact that mine are not as structured so the ““pressure to perform” is off?

Teaching AP...they truly do own the content. It’s their responsibility to prepare themselves. I’m just a highlighter. I go and highlight things that they might need to know more in depth. They can also ask questions or suggest topics that they want further ““highlighting” on.

Oh this one is easy, and also a cop out for me...I want Mrs. Frizzle’s Magic School Bus... or Doctor Who’s TARDIS. Take instant field trips back in time BUT it would also need to have a protection shield so we couldn’t mess with the past.

Unpopular Opinion #14

It’s easier to teach math than it is to teach literacy, and that’s why math scores are always higher. Math, at the elementary/middle level, is concrete and does not have any shades of meaning. This is especially in schools with a large English as a Second Language population.

I can’t teach “literacy” in a formulaic, get-the-right-answer-every-time sort of method. It’s complicated and requires a level of engagement and critical thinking that is difficult for students to master.

I’m truly not trying to start a fight, I’m open to a dialogue. But this is something that’s really weighing on me right now as we’re smack dab in the middle of standardized testing, so I needed to post it. Thanks.

It makes me sad that when a student of mine says she wants to be a teacher, my first thought is “don’t do it” or “ don’t do that to yourself.” Don’t get me wrong, I love my job but the increased demands, lack of support and pay, standardized testing and the political decisions made by non-educators is getting to be too much. I hate to think what the profession will be like by the time this student gets a teaching job.

some offense, but non-teachers are not allowed in my classroom.

no CEO’s, no “co-founders,” no “directors of,” no “consultants,” no “evangelists,” no “product managers,” no “reformers.”

This is for two reasons:

1.) I am fiercely protective of my kids, and I refuse to expose them to anyone just trying to make a buck off of the backs of my students.

2.) I am fiercely protective of my career choice, and when people leave teaching, but continue to make money “consulting” to those who have remained in the profession is aggravating.

100% agree!

Unfortunately my school district is attempting to become a school district that makes money consulting. So I have administrators and coaches coming into my classroom, I cannot deny them, AND they get to make LOTS of money off the backs of my students.

If I ever become a history teacher, I’m going to write “gullible” on the ceiling. Then in the middle of class, I’ll announce, “There’s ‘gullible’ written on the ceiling.” After the whole look vs. not look shenanigan occurs, I shall then slam my books on my desk, prop myself up, lean forward and say, “Welcome to history. Your first lesson? Check your facts for yourself.”

The latest Twitter teacher trend of “I’m moving back to paper and pen and it’s so much better for my students!!!!” is absolutely maddening because for a decade these people have been pushing iPads, then Chromebooks and this app and that app…

And now, younger teachers are entering the profession, and technology has become so ubiquitous in school districts and older teachers are taking the plunge and getting familiar with this stuff. Everyone knows how to use a Google Doc.

So, in a desperate bid to stay relevant now they have to pivot away from technology and invent ways to convince teachers that they’re STILL doing it wrong to get blog views and book sales.

Just when teachers start to catch up, the people making money off of teacher’s insecurity immediately turn around and move the finish line.

Sadly, administrators are also guilty of this. I am all for teachers staying on top of their game and continuing to grow, but after a while teachers learn what does and doesn't work for them.

That doesn't mean we aren't afraid to try new things, just hesitant about the new 'fad'.

Like my mentor teacher once told me, education trends are like a pendulum on a clock, it always swings back. You stay in the education game long enough, you'll see it swing multiple times.
