Racism in the Hetalia Fandom
Honestly this has been a long time coming and I’m sorry for not stepping up sooner about it.
I’m glad everyone can collectively stand up to an obvious nazi but there is still a shit ton of casual racism that goes on in this fandom that needs to be addressed. Below are a few that are unfortunately pretty pervasive along with a brief explanation of why it’s bad and a link to a more in depth post on the subject if i could find one.
Making all the Asians related:
It may be tempting to say they’re all related because they’re part of the same “group” but that’s exactly why this is casually racist. Asians already face enough racism in the form of “all Asians look the same” and “aren’t you (a non-Chinese person) Chinese?”. This is basically a form of that. Since the Asians are usually taken to be related as a sibling of China (despite the use of sibling terms NOT always indicating relation in Asian cultures) , it plays into those same stereotypes and takes away the individual agency of those countries and basically boils them down to being related to China, and thus each other, in some way. Look, it’s not inherently bad to make them related, but if you aren’t making similar groups like the Nordics, Germanics, or former British colonies all related, you might want to sit down and examine why that is.
De-masculinization of Asians:
This is particularly a problem with ships involving China and Japan. It’s already a problem to woobify a character in a ship because it plays into gross seme/uke dynamics and fetishization of mlm relationships and is pretty darn homophobic and misogynistic because it implies someone in the relationship needs to be the “woman.” When you do it to the Asians specifically, you play into racist stereotypes of orientalism and exoticism around Asians that objectify them. If you headcanon them having a slighter frame that’s fine, but purposefully exaggerating size difference by making the non-white person of the ship super buff and manly and drawing the Asian super slender and curvy and pale is straight up fetishization. Discussion on this.
“The POC characters get less attention because they have less character development”
I often see this as an excuse when questioning why people never give POC characters attention despite publicly proclaiming how beautiful and awesome Seychelles is and how she deserves more love before they go back to writing headcanons on the Nordics and never mention her again. I apologize because I can’t find the original post (if you have it please link so I can give this person proper credit), but someone crunched the numbers and non-white characters had fewer appearances in fanfics than white characters PROPORTIONAL to their comic appearances. Even corrected for their fewer overall appearances in canon, non-white characters still appear FAR LESS in fan content than you would expect. The excuse that POC characters also have fewer appearances than white characters is also plain incorrect in some instances. China and Japan individually have more appearances than any single Nordic, and together have more appearances than ALL the Nordics combined. Want to guess who gets more attention from the fandom? Basically, your excuse that you can’t get into characters like China and Japan because “they appear less/have less development” is flimsy, casually racist, and simply falls flat because it’s plain NOT TRUE for some of these characters. I get that you like what you like and can’t really help it, but either stop using this as an excuse or stop skipping/skimming their comics when you’re reading and maybe you’ll find a reason to like them.
Replacing China with Canada in the Allies
So I need to tell you why replacing the only POC in a canonly established group with a FIFTH blonde white guy is bad? Apparently so, because when I mention this some person always comes out with “b-buh Canadian contributions to WW2!!” That’s cool, why not include Canada as an addition instead of straight up replacing China because the contributions of a western country apparently outweigh the millions of Chinese deaths and Chinese efforts in holding the Eastern front with Japan? (because who knew WW2 involved...idk, the WORLD instead of just Europe?)
Native America OCs
This isn’t about individual tribe/nation OCs. This is about overarching “Native America” OCs that either attempt to represent all indigenous cultures in America simultaneously or just try to be the “main” representation of the collective tribes (like England as the UK, or Germania, are excuses I’ve seen). Frankly I don’t care what your reasoning is. Like making all the Asians related, trying to represent indigenous cultures with a single personification erases the individuality of the different groups and essential implies they are all similar enough to have a single personification which is incorrect. The Cherokee and the Navajo live very different lifestyles with entirely different languages and cultures. Not to mention, most Native America OCs I see use feathered headdress imagery which is native to the Plains tribes and was only allowed to be worn by specific individuals under very specific circumstances. It wasn’t just a pretty aesthetic thing like a lot of people want to think. Here are two in-depth discussions on this one.
Mexico OCs
Great, you have a Mexico OC! Do you refer to them as a “fence/border hopper”, portray them as a constant annoyance to America begging for money/looking for work, make them do drugs, or portray them as violent and thuggish? If so you are wrong and need to stop, because these stereotypes are all extremely racist in nature!
Making dark skinned characters scary/violent
This particularly applies to 2p America, Cuba, and Turkey, but easily applies to any other dark skinned character that may be portrayed this way. Making 2p America in particular a violent thug reinforces stereotypes of dark-skinned (primarily black) people as being violent and prone to crime. I shouldn’t need to explain to you why this is bad and particularly racist. Please look no further than the BLM movement, which is actively combatting this. I know @basement-prussia has done a post on this but I’m having trouble finding it.
OCs in General
I understand sometimes it’s easier to relate to a character of your own creation than a canon character, and that this is some people’s preferred way of interacting with canon. That is perfectly fine, but I implore you: when making an OC, please do your research. Hetalia is unique in that the characters represent a people or culture. Because of this, you can’t just make a self-insert and slap the name of a place on it and call it good. If your OC represents a place that might be prone to any of the issues mentioned above, you need to do your research and do your best to make your OC accurate to that place and not just a two dimensional, racist stereotype. This here is a good discussion of some do’s and don’t’s with regards to makin OCs and not making them racist.
This is not, by all means, a complete list or even a complete discussion of racist things that go on in this fandom, but they are things I see over and over again. If you feel called out by any of these, instead of arguing and making excuses, question why you do them and try to do better. It’s okay to realize you have done some of these and aim to fix it. It’s not okay to do these and reblog this arguing about why you should be able to do it and making excuses about your specific circumstance. That makes you part of the problem. Don’t be part of the problem.
I know I didn’t even come close to covering everything, so if anyone else has something to add I invite you to reblog with your own comments.
Thank you for your post.
I agree with the point you've made about Non-Caucasian characters not being proportionally represented. The only part I am ambivalent on is the wording of 'excuse' - it feels a little accusatory. Indeed, characters like the Asians and African Nations should get more attention, but we can't demand others to create something for us, or make them feel bad for drawing something they like.
Making others aware of the situation is one way to do this. But in my opinion, it's a method of negative reinforcement. People will draw more of these characters because they feel bad, not because they actually have an interest in the character.
To add positive reinforcement, we can always fall back on flooding the tags with our own work and organising events for these characters, so they'll be attracted to everything the character has to offer. We can give them a chance to reach out to us, and the onus will be on them to take it.
In an ideal world, a person's opinion should be justified by the merit of the opinion itself and not their race. But due to the nature of this post, this being Tumblr, and because we don't live in that world yet, I am Peranakan Chinese.
With your post in mind, I will continue creating content for Asiatalia. Please continue creating content too!

Happy Birthday, America - and Happy Cope Day, UK!
I can't believe I missed Canaday because timezone :"
Still as good a time as ever to remember the Canadians ('leafs') banished from main 4chan boards on Day of the Rake, a 4chan April Fools prank where the flags in username flairs disappeared and users (primarily Americans, or 'burgers'), had to hunt them down.
Some leafs acted along. Others were proud to be Canadian and outed themselves immediately, without care for being shat on - mad respect to those lads.
Some say the leafs are plotting their revenge with 'Day of the Grill' - I wonder if they'll carry it out...
guys one of the local singaporean news outlets posted hws singapore fanart….
In light of posting about Burgundy, I think it’s a great time to explain why France shouldn’t be a singular entity in the 12th-15th centuries.
The Kings of France in that period had about as much control of what we would currently think of as the territory of France as the Holy Roman Emperors had of what is currently Germany. The Capetian kings effectively ruled Paris and the surrounding territories, especially early in the 12th century. They only nominally had some power over the rest of the “French” realm. The individual Duchies had a very significant amount of autonomy, and were able to defy the king with little consequence.
A map is very helpful in understanding how fragmented it really was:
That blue part in the middle is the royal domain. The rest are effectively autonomous states. That includes the Duchies of Burgundy, Brittany, Normandy, and Aquitaine. (Normandy and Aquitaine are heavily connected to England because they were held by the Plantagenets).
The French kings are eventually able to secure control over most of the current French territory. So, the map when the Burgundian-Habsburg union happened looked like this:
(again, the blue is the Capetian holdings)
So, the upshot from all of this when it comes to France is that Francis representing “France” doesn’t really cover it in this period. Much like pre-unification Germany and Italy, there should be a multitude of Duchies and territories that he is eventually able to get under his control.
And that is where characters like Burgundy and Brittany should come in. They existed independently of France and they really should have their own personifications. Burgundy is particularly interesting, because as you can see from the map he also straddled the line between France and the Holy Roman Empire and also held Flanders, which would eventually become the Benelux.
I don’t frequent the French history part of the fandom enough to know if anyone else has done this. But Francis’ wars to pacify his composite parts (and to drive the English back to England) are incredibly interesting, and would be well worth exploring with a full cast of separate Duchies and Counties.
>tfw france was just several gremlins stacked in a trenchcoat all along
England: Oh god. There's more of them.

mini guide to common singaporean/singlish terms when writing dialogue for hws singapore!
hope this might help for fic writers/comic creators! x-posted from twt and inspired by twt user spiltrosetea
lah/leh/lor three of the most common suffixes used in singlish, often used in different contexts. ‘lah’ is more neutral, ‘leh’ has a more questioning tone, ‘lor’ has a resigned/annoyed tone to it eg. “I’m busy lah, so I can’t come. I didn’t know it was compulsory leh.”
jio/bojio jio = to invite someone out, bojio = often used as an annoyed expression for when friends forget to invite you to plans eg. “I’m going to jio Malaysia for dinner - wait you guys had dinner already? Bojio!”
sian/shiok sian = when you’re sick and tired of something. shiok = the opposite of sian, for when something is extremely pleasing (especially for food) eg. “The meeting overran for like an hour, damn sian.”/“The food is expensive, but it’s really shiok.”
shag shag = no, it doesn’t mean anything of a sexual nature like it does in english (though you could use this as a potential humorous misunderstanding if you’d like) - it means to be tired/exhausted eg. “I’m feeling damn shag from that run earlier.”
pon pon = to skip/play truant for something eg. “I’m really not feeling up to it, you wanna pon the meeting with me?”
alamak/suay alamak = exclamation of shock/surprise when something unpleasant happens out of the blue. suay = unlucky/unfortunate eg. “Alamak! I forgot my files at home, and I have to present later! Ugh, today damn suay.”
bo pian/tahan bo pian = usually said as an expression of resignation when you have no choice but to do something, or when something can’t be helped. tahan = to bear with something unpleasant eg. “Boss said I have to finish this by today, so I have to tahan lor. Bo pian lah.”
wah lau eh/cheebai/siam lah! wah lau eh = used interchangeably with ‘what the fuck’. cheebai = cunt (often paired with other terms to curse at people, like “chao cheebai” which is more vulgar.) siam = get out of the way eg. “Wah lau eh! Cheebai, learn to drive! Siam lah!”
kaypoh/kiasu kaypoh = busybody. kiasu = literally means ‘scared to lose’ - often in terms of a fear of missing out, or wanting to be better than everybody else eg. “Don’t be such a kaypoh lah. Everyone got the same amount, why are you being so kiasu?”
limpeh this one is a fun one. limpeh = smug way of referring to oneself in third person, insinuating that one is of a higher position than the other. eg. “Who are you calling short? Limpeh has a higher GDP than you!”

✨Angst time ✨
fun fact: the meeting to decide the surrender of Singapore to Japan took 15 minutes
So with the help of some friends on the rusame server I’m in, and idea credit goes to “coolestemil” on Instagram, the number of possible ships in hetalia (mono & poly) is just another reason to be slightly terrified of the fandom lol
So basically we started with a base number of characters (63 excluding micronations and some other obscure characters, but including the ancients plus Prussia).
So the number of possible monogamous ships in hetalia is:
Pretty big right?
You don’t even know, man
Then we thought, “well what about the 2ps and nyos?”
(Big brain moment ^^ )
So doubling the 63 each time, we got
Including 2ps:
Including 2ps and Nyos:
Including 2ps, Nyos, and 2p Nyos:
I n s a n e
But wait
Cause what about trios 👀
So using three (3) instead of two (2):
With the 2ps:
With the 2ps and Nyos:
And with 2ps, Nyos, and 2p Nyos:
Yeah, so in short, what the fuck lmao
so this is why I've never been able to leave

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…
Listen, this is serious.
Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.
nooo don’t use sites that make academic papers accessible to everyone, why would you do such a terrible thing
oh and in case none of those HORRIBLE sites dont have the article you need, DON’T email the author of the paper. They aren’t paid by the publishing company, and will give you the paper for FREE. HOW HORRIBLE
seize the means of education, comrades.
