I feel like the whole world continues to move backwards socially. Rights are being taken away, people are separating into social classes, Europe is being devastated by war, children are being shot, violent crimes are increasing, and capitalism is just praised by the masses. Our youth glamorizes the next shiny new fad and will trade connections and dignity to get it just to flex on social media. We have the ability to communicate and be exposed to so many different people and things and yet this is the loneliest society that has ever existed. Why is stepping on the next person to get things and clout more important than having a pleasant life? Why is dividing ourselves into groups to tear each other down the go to when we encounter something that is different? Why are we allowed to use religion as an excuse to hurt whole groups of people? Why is it okay for bigots to talk about equality and be praised for their hatred? It feels like all of the grossest and stupidest people are the ones with the spotlight on them. Meanwhile there are whole groups of us trying to help people that need it in every way we possibly can, in our homes, our jobs, and our personal lives. However, we aren't the people that you will see on TV or in the media. So overshadowed by the ugliness out there that I literally watched a person look at my coworker shocked and ask "Why are you helping me? Like, what do you get out of it?" And when my coworker responded with "I help because it's the right thing to do. I just want you to have a better life." The client responded with "I don't believe you. There's always a catch." It shouldn't be this way. We shouldn't have capitalistic transactional connections as the norm. Love and kindness should be fundamental. The meals we hand out in the park on Tuesday nights shouldn't be the only meal that a human has eaten all day. The conversation I had with the girl in the convince store shouldn't be the only time someone has acknowledged her existence this week. We should love each other. It's all we got. We don't get to take gold chains and expensive trinkets with us when we pass.
