I have two more questions: 1. Do you think Rachel knew/knows about Taub's suicide attempt in med school/residency? And 2. What kind of music do you think Taub listens to?

I am gnawing on your questions... 🤔

1. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Taub never told Rachel about his history of self harm. He just feels too much shame. It also kinda seems symptomatic of their relationship as a whole, where they do love each other, but it's a version of themselves that they've built specifically for each other (just like how Taub said he was toootally fine not having kids but that was just because he knew Rachel didn't want them). Ough, someone write a fic where she finds out and is devastated he never told her...

2. Oh wow, I could answer this one a few different ways...

A) Ok so first of all, canonically Taub uses the piña colada song as his ring tone for Rachel, which I think is more or less a little joke to himself. But if this indicates something about his taste in music, maybe he's just a radio guy. Like he might have music on in the background sometimes, and he likes whatever's on, but he isn't really *into* music all that much.

B) Secondly, I could assign Peter Jacobson's musical tastes to Taub purely because I think he's cute. Peter is admittedly not a big music guy, which he seems a little self-deprecating about, but he has mentioned liking REM in college, and really enjoying a Bruce Springsteen concert, and putting on Ella Fitzgerald when he wants to listen to some tunes. Sounds relatively "mainstream" in the sense that these are big name artists, but sort of diverse genres, pretty good taste, overall energetic but perhaps a little moody here and there. It's the slightly "elevated" version of option A.

C) Given Taub's canon history of not being particularly devout but taking pride in other Jewish folks who have achieved mainstream success (eg. he jumps to Sandy Koufax when House makes a stupid joke about how he can't be athletic because he's Jewish), I could see him going out of his way to listen to Jewish musicians who are performing in more "mainstream" genres but considered distinctive artists of a high caliber... my first thought is Leonard Cohen, and I think he'd fit right in with the artists mentioned in Option B as well.

I haven't engaged much with fic for this fandom, but I do remember coming across the this Taub/Kutner fic that was just... *chef's kiss*

Even if you're not particularly into Taubner as a concept, it's worth reading (provided you enjoy some nsfw as well). I really like how it gets into Taub's incessant self-loathing monologue and inherent patheticness 😭
