The right clothes for the job...
In Oracle, we see Morse arrive to meet Dr. Naomi Benford at the Oxford Women's Conference.
Intending to head directly to a concert afterwards, he's wearing a tux. Benford and Morse have never met and so when he wanders in, it's natural for her to assume that he's just another "chap" at the conference.
On my last rewatch, however, it struck me that the following exchange is rather more odd than I first realized.
BENFORD: (Walking up to Morse) The creche is just along the hall.
MORSE: I’m sorry? The creche?
BENFORD: The creche. The chaps are running it today, if that's what you're looking for.
I'd never cottoned on before—so she's obviously not the only one who missed the vital clue—but does she think a man who's going to be working the creche for a day is going to be wearing a tux for the job?
