Makati CityÂ
Makati City belongs to the seventeen urban centers that define Metro Manila, one of the most highly populated Metro regions anywhere. Having a population of over half a million people, Makati is rated as the 42nd most densely populated city in the world, with roughly 7,200 residents per square mile. Makati is notable for its exceptionally multicultural lifestyle, and for it’s reputation as a major entertainment center in the Manila area. Expatriates often choose to live in Makati, which has caused a large expatriate community to grow in the area with citizens from all over the world. Makati is well known also for its top notch shopping and department stores, found in the Greenbelt, Rockwell Center, Glorietta Mall, and Ayala Center.Â
The city also also boasts the tallest building in the Philippines with the PBCom Tower. Housing a variety of diverse national embassies, Makati is known as a significant center for intercontinental matters. But most of all, Makati stands out as the economic heart of the Philippines as well as one of several key financial, professional and commercial centers within all the Asian countries. And for this reason, and for the fact that it also houses the influential Makati Business Club and the Philippine Stock Exchange, Makati has rightfully earned the nickname and status of the Financial Capital of the Philippines.Â
The name “Makati” emerged via the Tagalog word kati, which stands for tide, referring to the tide of the Pasig River located to the North of Makati City. Currently the city of Makati is among the most contemporary metropolitan areas within the country of the Philippines, and is a major international competitor in Asia.

SM Makati
Built in September 1975, SM Makati is the flagship store of Shoe Mart, a small shoe retail store that had its roots in the 1950s. The first retail store was founded by Henry Sy Senior right in the heart of Carriedo, Manila’s commercial district in the 1950s up to mid 70s. In the 1950s Sy traveled back and forth to New York to buy shoes to sell in his store and get ideas on how to be successful in the retail industry. His diligence paid off and by 1972 he built his first department store in Quiapo, a stone’s throw away from his humble Carriedo store. The move to Makati was a clever one.Â
Manila was slowly deteriorating due to congestion and maybe its proximity to Malacanang and the University belt where demonstrations and rallies were evident prior to the and because of the declaration of Martial Law. Makati was slowly being groomed into the new commercial district and any company who can afford the move to Makati slowly but surely packed their corporations and settled in Makati. Henry Sy Sr. saw that and built his first flagship department store in Makati. The idea of one store selling all that one could possibly need was a success! Though the initial items sold at SM were inferior in quality as compared with the then Class A smaller-scale department store Rustan’s, SM was still a hit because it was selling very affordable items.Â
The store eventually upgraded its services and quality of items sold. Today, shopping at SM has come a long way. The SM Makati branch was revamped a few years back and has now walkways to neighboring Glorietta 1 and a direct access to the MRT station. One can literally shop for everything one needs at SM Makati. It is a department store and not a mall, although the department store itself carries numerous local and imported named-brands of clothes and shoes. Items sold at SM are quite affordable and of good quality too. There are no cinemas at SM Makati since it is solely a big department store.
Century City Mall

Greenbelt
The Greenbelt Mall has a hodgepodge of clienteles. Though middle income can easily afford fine dining and some branded items at the mall, only the rich and moneyed can afford to buy the upper scale store merchandise, like $1000 handbags, without batting an eyelash.Â
Hours: The mall is open every day. Shops open at 10:00 A.M. and close at 10:00 P.M. Coffee shops at the courtyard are open most days 24/7. Parking is not a problem.
wandering around Burgos Street.
Burgos Street
P Burgos Street is the most tourist friendly and easiest to navigate red light district in Manila. It’s a 200m long street in the modern business district of Makati (although the surrounding area is not really the most developed part of Makati). Bikini bars, sports bars, western restaurants, massage salons and even plenty of freelancers on the street (both girls and ladyboys) offering “massages” in your hotel room. Plus, the nicest shopping mall in Manila (Greenbelt) is just a 5-10 minute taxi ride away.Â
You can even walk there in 20-30 minutes. The two best and longest established girly bars on P Burgos Street are Bottoms and High Heels. Bottoms has the most attractive girls on the strip but they can be a little sketchy asking for drinks even before sitting down and “getting warm” with you.

The view between Glorietta and Landmark connecting bridge.
Glorietta
Glorietta used to be a park surrounded by retails shops and restaurants. The only big building in the park’s perimeter was the QUAD, a 1970’s building comprised of four cinemas. The Glorietta park was a refreshing space to sit and rest in between window shopping and bar hopping around the perimeter. In the 1990s Ayala Land Corporation decided to renovate QUAD and Glorietta Park.Â
The concept was to out in one roof all the establishments in the park’s perimeter and more. Phase by phase Glorietta was built. Glorietta 1 to 4 are anchored by the former QUAD theatres. Glorietta 5 is a separate building across Rustan’s and the Manila Intercon. However, mall hopping has never been easier because there are series of interconnected bridgeways and walkways that make traversing from SM Makati to G 1 to 4 (as popularly called) to Rustan’s , Landmark and Greenbelt a “breeze”.Â
All you have to do is park in the multi-level underground parking area and from there, you can walk to all the malls within the commercial complex. Glorietta is “almost” a one-stop shopping center. “Almost” because the complex does not have a supermarket area. This shortcoming is more than compensated by the neighboring supermarkets of Rustan’s, SM Makati and Landmark.Â
The retail stores and restaurants in Glorietta are diverse enough that many different people from all walks of life enjoy shopping and window shopping at Glorietta. Easily accessible by both public and private transport, the mall is always teeming with people. The Mall has fully air-conditioned atrium with children’s play area and an activity center that is a venue for numerous trade shows and concerts, for the benefit of its shoppers. The fourth floor of Glorietta 4 is where the six cinemas are located.
