The black areas represent the remaining natural dark skies in the United States
Iβve been in the middle of the ocean at night and now live in texas and it is so hard to explain to people that no, they have not ever seen the night sky. It is so hard to explain to people that what they think is a proper night sky is fucking pathetic. A disgrace.
People talk about how you canβt see stars in the city and yeah, thatβs true, but their concept of βseeing starsβ is being able to make out orionβs belt.
So, so few people have see the sky in all its glory and itβs not sad. Itβs a fucking crime. Seeing a perfectly dark night, no clouds, not a hint of light pollution? Thatβs a fucking religious experience.
The sky the vast vast majority of us grew up with is not the sky that inspired us to look up. It is not the sky that inspired constellations. You canβt even see most constellations.
Your ancestors looked at the night sky and said βsurely, that is where the gods must live.β And you might be lucky if you can see hardly more than a handful of stars.
The sky is full, fucking FULL, of stars, and youβve never seen them.
I remember the first time I saw a properly dark sky and was like βoh thatβs why itβs called the milky wayβ and promptly started to cry
When we were on a field trip to the middle of the red sea, I remember us all crowding at the end of the boat that didnβt have lights and just lying on our backs and staring
When you see a properly dark starscape
You understand why people wrote poems and made up legends and built rockets and said heavenβs in the sky
The universe is infinite. So are the stars
Iβm trying to find a picture on google images to show you what I mean and I canβt find any
You think of the night sky like fairy lights on black velvet, but itβs not itβs not itβs like, like, dust in sunlight, like - I canβt find the words.
The stars are everywhere, like sugar, like glitter, like dust. You canβt find the constellations at first, not because you canβt recognise them, but because thereβs so many stars you canβt pick out the familiar line of Orionβs belt. The North star has gone from bright familiarity to almost vanishing among a thousand, a hundred thousand, a million other lights. The milky way is a line of light arcing across the sky like a moon-trail on water only infinitely, infinitely bigger.
And for the first time in your life youβll understand why people call it a dome, because it is, itβs three dimensional in exactly the way a city skyscape isnβt.
Youβll understand why Luthien TinΓΊviel danced under starlight, not moonlight, why people in a time before we knew the earth was round still looked up and wondered and built telescopes and dreamed about the stars.
The stars are endless and ancient and infinite and you will stand with your head craned back and your rucksack forgotten at your feet and youβll feel like youβre falling upwards into that great bright sky like itβs calling you home and youβll wonder how you ever thought the stars were beautiful before tonight when all youβd ever seen were the naked empty skyscapes of your home. And youβll cry and youβll spend the rest of your time there gazing up and wondering and imagining what it would be like to stand among those bright silver flecks
And then youβll come home, and look up, and fall in a different kind of love with that handful of blazing stars to stubborn to be outdone by the whole of human invention, leading you home despite the light pollution and the clouds and the endless bustle of this shrinking planet.
this is not a shot from a space telescope overlayed behind a woods, or anything. thatβs not the sky as kepler or hubble or james webb see it. thatβs the sky from a dark sky park in michigan. thatβs the view you are missing out on from right here on earth. thatβs the view that has been stolen from you.

DuckDuckGo's new search feature comes as the internet is being flooded with AI-generated slop.
The filter relies on manually curated open-source blocklists, including the βnuclearβ list, provided by uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist,β DuckDuckGo said in a post on X. βWhile it wonβt catch 100% of AI-generated results, it will greatly reduce the number of AI-generated images you see.
Left: AI filter is off Right: AI filter is on
Another tip for DDG - if you want to permanently get rid of DDG's AI features (which you can turn off in settings, but only temporarily) - for now you can just use noai.duckduckgo.com as your search engine. Works as advertised in the name.

There's another post on here where this woman talks about dating a rich guy and she was like "oh you can't drink alcohol on a public sidewalk here" and he was like "Sure you can -- it's $500." Like he'd done it often enough that he had the "price" memorized.
the word "privilege" comes from the Latin privilegium, meaning "private law," or law granting one person or group benefits others don't enjoy
I remember reading an article about Koch Industries that said they just budget in fines for violating environmental regulations and lawsuit settlements for damage and accidents caused by broken pipelines -- itβs cheaper than installing cleaner, safer equipment.
Fines that arenβt adjusted to the means of the violator are worse than useless.
Punishable by fine = legal for the rich
FUCK YES
Thereβs βblack comedyβ and then thereβs M*A*S*H.

Fun fact, the DVD box sets have an option turn off the laugh track and it makes it a much more somber and enlightening social commentary. Cause it may be set in the Korean War, but itβs really about the Vietnam War.
Waking up from your decade long enchanted sleep to learn that, not only is sharing your True Name with the fae okay now, but there's actually a rule against using a false name when entering the faerie market.
Your friends admit that this causes some problemsβ it's way easier to fall victim to a false deal, or get stolen away nowβ but everyone goes to the fae market to buy their goods so what are you gonna do? Not see your friends? Go out of your way to buy more expensive stuff from the human market? Yeah right.
Also yes they still perform their light-footed fluttering dances under the silvery light of the full moon, but in order to get in you have to first watch the dancers perform two short plays about why you should shop at certain local businesses. Also if you want to talk about the performance afterwards then you need to trade them your True Name, your home address, your date of birth and your personal interests.
You do this so that the fae can this information on a scroll and give it to local business owners.
Another part of the deal they broke is that nobody may talk negatively about those businesses within the market walls. In fact, your friends say, the enchantment is so effective that it's very difficult to talk negatively about anything at all.
βI know it sounds un-good,β your friend admits. βBut there are loopholes.β
βIn retrospect,β another friend says, βI wish the town had voted un-yes to teaching the fae about money.β
βOn the plus side,β the first friend says, βI hear the market is investing in one of those enchanted statues that responds to questions with deliberately ambiguous riddles, so long as you trade it your memories of secondary school.β
βOh, cool. Is that why they're burning down the library?β
You wonder if it's too late to go back to sleep.

Worldcat is my bestie and my one true love!! Not only does it tell you what library a book is at, but it also price compares different used book sites against each other for easy view! It's how I got Tarot For the Master for $10!!
Oh, and since I have your attention: z-library (books and textbooks) and sci-hub (gatekept scientific journal articles.) I just ripped a textbook for class off z-library and snatched a required reading from sci-hub. Life is good and education should be accessible at every stage and station of life.

the construction workers have something to say
Do you ever wonder what on earth possesses people like this? Like, to be clear, I do not mean that as an insult. I mean this woman put together like at least three completely different, unrelated forms of craftwork, all three of which require significant amounts of time to master, and went "yeah I'm just gonna throw these in a blender now" and then this came out. Like. You understand how insane it is to do just mirrorwork? To do just color-tinting? To do just bas-relief sculpture? And none of that touches on the preparatory sketching or the finishing resin or the glitter. Like. I want to know how this woman thinks. How did she come up with this. What made her want to do this. Where she got this idea. I can't imagine being able to think in enough dimensions to do this successfully with a shape as simple as an apple, much less fur or feathers or all those tiny flower ruffles. Hell, I can't imagine being able to think in enough dimensions to do it unsuccessfully. How did she come up with this???

So I just had a realization that kind of helped me with my dark thoughts and mental health, and ofc it's linked to Terry Pratchett's Discworld.
Because sometimes, around 2:17 AM, my mind turns into the Ankh river: grim, swirling, toxic, and full of god-knows-what floating past. The usual thoughts, such as: you're a failure, everyone hates you, and you forgot to send that one important email back in 2019.
And then I often feel like I'm broken and I don't deserve anything, and I'm being a burden for everyone I know.
But then I thought about Vimes, and how he would just light a cigar and grunt that the river's always been like that - and the real point isn't to clean it, it's to keep building the city around it anyway.
And about Vetinari, who would raise an eyebrow and remind me that the river is essential - and irrelevant all at once.
Because the citizens of Ankh-Morpork don't waste their lives waiting for the river to run clean. They build bridges over it, while trying not to fall in, and live their rich and difficult lives anyway.
And I'm not just the river, I'm the whole bloody city of Ankh-Morpork. And I fucking love that city.
