Tara’s plastic skirt, 1992
"| used to have a very good friend in the sixties, who was the son of the Irish Guinness family, the son called Tara. He came up to Liverpool on a visit with me, and that’s how we knew each other. He came round to my house in London a lot, and we would sit and talk and get a bit stoned together and he was a really nice friend. It was very sad that he died in a car accident in London. Many people often thought the words to the Beatles song “Day in the Life” — “He blew his mind out in a car” — was about Tara. | don’t think it was, but | have heard that John even thought it was. Since John was half writer of that song, it may be true. So when | was leaving the plastic on, | thought | would leave the sticker on because it had this nice name that | like, the name Tara. So that became a little tribute to him in the top left-hand corner, and | signed it up in the middle so it almost became part of the landscape." - Paul McCartney, Paul McCartney: Paintings 1999
it's really interesting how paul seems to be self-concious about appearing "pretentious" but at the same time he'd of course talk that yes he was the original pretentious beatle. at different times especially years after the beatles and john's death he seems to be start to take these things more lightly and being open about the weird stuff he was interested in. i suppose everything after the sgt. pepper and then him suddenly appearing "straight" in john's eyes when he was with linda caused him to shut this side of him for years, he was happy and not that young anymore to be into this sort of stuff. he loves to joke and be just half-serious about mocking things and himself all the time. i suppose this is what the fear of being looked at wrong does it to you especially when you're so popular and you're paul mccartney. he doesn't talk about it anymore, it's all in the past, but it mattered to him when he was a young man. being so open to all kinds of things made him that artist that he is. and there's so much disinformation on that even now. if you just google anything about paul mccartney and his connection to experimental literature, for example, you find half-assed words taken from the butt about how paul didn't "take it seriously". it wasn't ever meant to be taken seriously. still, it mattered to him and he was very interested, we know this by the accounts of barry miles. paul mccartney is a human being. and there's paul mccartney public figure, we all know that one. paul said that miles is the right person to write that story, he was there. "i had known paul when his interest in the avant garde was at its height, and was able to recount many incidents that were to even the avid fans" said miles. it's so very interesting and mysterous. like, paul mccartney's story as the beatle is the story of a young man still trying to find himself and dealing with all the personal crap too. i personally see myself very much in this, i can really feel all the weirdness and horrors and how overwhelming it all is when you're young. nothing is that one-dimensional. it inspires to live the life to its fullness but be aware of the risks, be open to everything new and confusing, understand human soul and mind. i don't make idols for myself. but we all love what paul mccartney created and what it made us feel and think about, it's really something so really cool and admirable.
i love art and today in the world's dullness i wish to be myself. does anybody else understand?
anybody fw this
