Here to feed my obsession with Jonathan Groff

Original Merrily We Roll Along cast member Ann Morrison (Mary Flynn) talks about meeting Jonathan at her cabaret show and the new cast recording.

Ann: I got to meet Jonathan Groff because he came to see my show. He was just delightful and he just got cast playing Franklin Shepard. So we had a nice little bond there...

We went to see the opening night (off-Broadway). I was relieved knowing we could leave in the hands of three people who really loved each other and really understood Frank, Mary and Charley. That felt really good and we got a chance to tell them afterwards.

It was fun to watch Jonathan Groff crying because he is so sweet, and so connected emotionally. And it felt like he really understood Franklin Shepard...

But it's open now and I guess it got rave reviews, especially because of the three of them, which is lovely, and I'm really touched by that.

The London premiere appears to have been cancelled, potentially due to Covid, so there may be only be premieres in Toronto (potentially not all cast) and San Francisco. 

It’s likely that not all of the TV interviews will be available online, so if anybody can record or summarise the appearances that would be great (we’re not based in the US).

THROWBACK THURSDAY. Jonathan Groff was such a great co-host this past Sunday night for the fundraiser for Ossoff and Warnock in Georgia when the original cast of Hamilton got together to create a Holiday Special. We talked a bit about it this week when I thanked him for being of service in such an important and joyous way.

We joke that I didn’t “stalk” him after seeing him in Spring Awakening but instead “cultivated” our friendship. He is a sweetheart and has often woven in and out of my life on a personal and professional way. It got me to thinking about his saying yes to one of my onstage interviews at the Curran when I was its Editor at Large. It was a fun night. I miss doing those interviews. Maybe I’ll try to find another venue and way to do them once the world re-orders itself and we are all more hopeful and joyous and decency gives us its cue to reenter our lives to heal the social fabric. It feels a lot like we are all waiting in our dressing rooms right now and half hour has been called. The audience is buzzing in anticipation. A new show is opening. Everyone is anticipating a hit.

Jon is not on social media so he won’t be embarrassed by this.
