can i tell you something just between you and me? when i hear your voice i know iâm finally free ( dimitri + esteri ) ! ( @tangodancerwrites¡ )
âJebanyja prydurki - jany niÄoha nie mohuÄ trymaÄ u sabie,â a ferocity unlike anything Dimitri usually allowed himself to feel seemed to infect his voiceâ a rumbling fury that threatened to overwhelm him until he tossed the newspaper onto the drawing room table and ran his fingers through his hair in a harsh, rough motion that did very little to calm him. His heart gave a hard lurch in his chestâ the irregularity that followed forcing him to take a deep breath as he pressed his fingers to a spot above his heartâ feeling the staccato, not-quite-right beating of the muscle beneath his skin with a mounting anxiety that he tried to soothe with his eyes clenched shut and his jaw tight to the point of grinding his teeth into dust. He was vaguely conscious of the sound of footsteps entering the roomâ far more conscious of the way the anxiety gave way to mounting embarrassment at being caught so openly weak in any capacity.Â
A cold ripple of terror flickered down his spine like lightning as his heartbeat quickened in his chest and Dimitri very nearly opened his mouth to apologize for the state he was in until he took a deep, slow breath and all of the tension seemed to drain out of him at onceâ until he felt nearly boneless at the scent of Esteâs perfume, so familiar to him now he quietly counted it as one of his favorite scents in the worldâ second only to what he could remember of his motherâs perfume or the smell of bread baking in his grandmotherâs kitchen so very long ago.Â
He opened his eyes slowly, blinking against the change in light after having them clenched shut for any length of time and the sight of the Finnish princess was enough to make him smile when he felt very much like he wanted to do anything else in the world than express happiness for anything after the article heâd read.Â
âHow is it you always manage to find me when Iâm not quite feeling like myself?â Dimitri asked by way of greeting, his voice the slightest bit rough from the effort of not outright losing his mind in a particularly public environment. The smile he offered Este was weakâ a wan, diseased little thing in comparison to the bright, effervescent grins he usually greeted her with. He reached for the tea he had on the table in front of him before he patted the empty space on the couch heâd taken a spot on with an inquisitive expression on his face he hoped conveyed that heâd like Este to join him, if even for a moment. âI think itâs gone a bit cold now but would you⌠like to have some tea with me? I could⌠well, a distraction feels too small a word for what seeing you offers me but I could do with thinking about something other thanâŚâ Dimitri trailed off, gesturing to the newspaper article detailing his fight with another lord prior to his leaving for Thailand in the most unkind terms heâd ever seen. A grunt of frustration followed the gesture and he shook his head to clear it, âIâd really just like to chat about anything else if you have time to spare for me, malieĹkaja kamieta.â

There wasnât much that truly shocked Helsingin kirkas rubiini, Esteri Koivisto, anymore. Despite her youthful demeanor, the weight of thirty-two years and her homeland, her people, had exposed her to more than she liked to realize. When one was preparing to rule a country in the shadow of a devastating World War, rebel insurgences, and the like... Life had little it could shock you with. And it had tried. From public scandals to personal ones, bad friends and the whatnot, lifeâs twists and turns did little to thrill the Crown anymore. She would not bat an eye, her smile would not falter, and she would simply move on with her day. But as she stood in the doorway of a certain Belarussian Duke, she was reminded of a rule of life sheâd long forgotten--it was in your best interest to not tempt the fates or think youâre above them.
And sheâd not heard her sweet Dima talk like that before, not once.Â
Unable to untangle the rapid-fire thoughts shooting off in her own mind, the rabbit-like way her own heart began to race as she kept her gaze on the person before her, a perch in the Gulf. Helpless. Confusion, first, and this deep pang of shock that rippled through the waves of her heart to hear someone she adored so dearly filled with such venom. Quickly, that was replaced by tangible fear as their eyes shut, and her feet raced into the room before she could stop herself. The sound of her own heels echoed in the room, only stopping as he observed her, relaxing only slightly as she took him in.
â--Kultaseni.â
It had been far too long since Este had gone to church, properly sat in the pews, but her tone was unmistakable to her own ears--the word was a prayer of sorts. A prayer that they relax before her, that they warm even slightly. She only wished her tone could offer any sort of comfort, and not for the first time, she wished sheâd held her motherâs gentle alto tone, low and reassuring. Instead, even with years of practice, her shrill soprano, excited and vibrant, did little in situations such as this. She held too much... muchness within her being, within the weapon of her voice. Perhaps that was why she, fluid as the waters she was raised beside, moved closer to him, easily sliding atop the table to sit before him. Hand reached for his, stealing it in her grasp, as she watched a ghost of a smile she loved dearly cross his features.
Her eyes turned downward, unable to take in the sight, when she saw the offending paper. A recognizable one. âAh. That.â It wasnât as if she hadnât heard about the fight before sheâd landed in Thailand. She kept close tabs on her loved ones, both in major press and in the tabloids, eager for some scrap of news on how they were doing. Dimitri was no exception. If anything, sheâd used the papers to judge just when she needed to demand time off to see him, to hold his hand and envelop him in the warmth of her adoration and her tight clutch. A soft sigh left her lips, and she moved her free hand to his cheek, leaning over.Â
âNevermind that, kultainen sydän.â Her hand remained, hoping if anything to keep his gaze upon her instead of the paper beside her. Whatever warmth his smile currently lacked, she was sure herâs held, shining back at his as she tried to push the unpleasantness from her mind. A gentle pat on his cheek, and her hand slid down, resting on his shoulder. âIâm sure cold tea will help. Besides, could be a stroke of genius on your part, considering the weather.â Sheâd not been responding well to the sudden change, thankful for plenty of work to keep her inside and sufficiently cooled.Â
âI always have time for you, sweet Dima. But you have to promise me something first--I need a real smile before we move away.â It was a gentle tease, and she leaned a bit closer to them, a cheeky gleam to her eyes. It was easy, for her, to play the role of the distraction, and if thatâs what they needed, she would do it. Her eyes batted for dramatic effect, goofy. âFor me, rakas?â
