Sanguine Son

Impulse was a dangerous thing. It was the reason half his kills had been chosen in the first place; pathetic monsters succumbing to their own worst instincts without a second thought. They deserved to suffer as much as he delighted in their suffering.  Maybe it was vanity, but he liked to think he was a better class of monster. There was always a plan, and you kept to the plan- and you kept another plan at the ready, just in case.   Sure enough, it was impulse that brought him here. For a moment, he thought he was really going to do it- hold fast to that miserable chain, suspended so far above the ground, as they made their desperate exit. He’d taken what he’d thought of as his last look at her, silhouetted in Light and blood as she held her own, trembling with the sheer amount of will it took. He’d never seen her like that. Not in the mild greyness of their dockside chats, nor in firelit moments well away from prying eyes.  One last look, and then he would be off with the others. But impulse- that need to change something in the moment, without a care for contingency or consequence- was most dangerous for how out of nowhere it came. Like striking up a conversation on chilly mornings before the village woke. Like getting close to someone, on the sheer cliff faces of the Fjord. He always maintained it brought nothing but trouble- except when it brought him to her.  As he let go of the chain, felt himself buffeted by the priest’s bewildered attempt to save him… he thought nothing of his plans. There were none, except to be there with her- hold her, as their attackers bore down on them in waves of blood and piercing steel. Grow quiet beside her, as her Light faded along with their pulse… im-pulse…  into darkness.

Despite the late night, I awaken refreshed to pre-dawn light gentle with promise. Wrapping a dove-grey shawl around my shoulders, I take the creaky steps down from my top floor room to the heart of the raven, warm with the smells of hearth and the burgeoning day.

You’re already waiting, of course. Leaning against the adjacent wall, arms crossed in a leisurely manner, you kick off and nod politely upon my descent. With soft smiles and no words we wander out into salty air together, coffees and sketchbook in hand.

I follow along behind. The breeze plays with my shawl and as it dances in the wind I fancy myself for a moment as a questing mystic, here to gather what wisdom I can from the meeting of water and fire, charcoal and parchment.

Your stride is sure along both pathway and riprap. Auburn locks tied up in that foxtail toss to and fro with each step, gracing strong, square shoulders; the frame of someone who takes pride in hard work. Yet there’s also lithe grace, a honed surety which belies some deeper wisdom of the land and how ones body best moves upon it.

The light shifts quickly. Dawn is imminent.

Near the water’s edge, face bright with almost boyish excitement and the sun’s infant rays, your chest rises with a deep inhale as you turn to meet my gaze. Reaching out, calloused hands assist with pulling me up and over the last few rocks to a small stretch of secluded sand. I settle down upon the woven linen you suddenly produce, sipping coffee contentedly as you ready your sketchbook.

The light creeps over the horizon, and I could swear there’s a song accompanying it. There’s something holy about the witnessing of another day dawning, and I observe both belore’s ascent and your artistic process with profound gratitude. Eyes bright as you set to work upon the page, you seem to relish creating something out of nothing.

Capturing a moment.

“Anar'alah belore,” I murmur despite myself. Those verdant eyes shift to peer at me with a strangely serious expression, lingering but a moment too long before going back, fingers dancing across the page with a heady mix of passion and reverence.

I can’t wait to see what it blossoms to be.

This year is coming to a close, and come the next, we’ll be re-branded! But don’t worry, nothing else will change about what we do (Except for maybe some additions!), and we’ll still be serving our taverns and catering events. 

The true touch of Winter is finally here, and though our little island is chilled outside, the tavern is warm and welcoming and will be serving up specialty hot cocoa for all to enjoy. 

Not only that, but we’ll be doing something for you all to show our thanks this Holiday season. As you come in and find your place within the tavern, you’ll be handed a wrapped up gift with an unknown present inside. It could be anything, but hopefully it wont be coal! 

And, even more! We’ll be having a very special holiday performance by our very own Talyn, and music performed by our lovely Vynix Nostra, so be sure to show them your support!
