that one scene where james takes off his helmet and makes eye contact with keith is the second time he sees keith.

when the lions arrived on earth, keith’s eyes search for james among the cadets. but when he finally spots james, james turns his head and looks away. he couldn’t meet keith’s eyes. how could he? keith left without so much of a word and only left behind his dog tags, almost as if it was a promise of returning(james wanted to assume)

however he didn’t return, when james came to his senses, he clung onto the dog tags and had to accept the fact that keith is never coming back, keith never cared, keith never sent any messages back—until he received a recording addressed to his name

anyways, this is such a good headcanon, would James ever pick up the recording/tape to watch it, who knows many in some universe he watched it when he got it in others it gathers dust

i think after their second meeting, keith would have to take the initiative to try to talk to james in order for them to be together again

when james tries to meet new people after keith left, he soon realizes anything he does is futile because nothing can fill the spaces that keith left. every touch felt foreign and and an insult to what he had with keith.

Keith fighting back against the head thingy when the paladins are trying to bound so it won't them any of his time with James, and keith being haunted in his sleep by visions of James.

then the space whale happens and it shows Krollia soke of Keith's memories and Jamss is in those memories and Keith and James are laughing and being soft and chaotic

and then Keith does get back to earth and he does see James again.

he hears a voice that sounds familiar but also older and different, and they get in the car he doesn't know its James not until the other takes off his helmet and they make eye contact and James just walks off

before they cry and cuddle together, keith knocks on the door of james’ room. after james opens the door, they just stare at each other, eyes locking in on one another. they stare in silence before one of them breaksl the tension

they have a long conversation and keith catches up james with what he experienced in space. as they talk for hours, they soon fall asleep in each others arms

Keith ends up staying in James room basically all the time since they talk and James holds onto him a little tighter then before because he's scared Keith is going disappear.

i do want to mention that maybe keith and james are both especially touch-starved before their reunion. although keith is close w the paladins, he was away for quite some time and he does feel a bit of disconnect from the rest of them. on the other hand, james doesn’t allow people to get close to him like keith did(he’s close w his friends but it’s a different connection than he had with keith)

i think even if keith and james are aware of how they both feel towards each other, they wouldn’t establish an official relationship because of the situation with the war, there’s just too much at stake and not enough time to settle

also in the war room like If they are both so tired then just imagine Keith grabbing a spare chair and like forcing James to sit down so he won't fall asleep on his feet

i would like to change that their first interaction would probably be very emotionally charged and james storms out. keith would probably take a while to reach out to knock on the door to james’ living quarters
