Hey I've been thinking of doing voice acting for awhile. What do you think I should do to get started?
First off, the best thing you can do for yourself is taking acting classes. No voice actor ever started out just voice acting. They all have some kind of acting background.
Next, a decent quality microphone and if you can spare the money, a pop filter. The mic can run you anywhere from $20-$50, and the filter usually goes for about $20. Recording on your own is an investment but its money well spent.
And finally, you need some kind of audio program. Audacity seems to be the favorite free program of those getting into voice acting so I recommend that. I personally own a Mac so it came preloaded with Garageband, an all around recording program that does pretty well with editing. So I wouldn’t exactly be the one to ask about editing programs, being that I have an all-in-one system. So maybe a few google searches can help you on that.
But that’s basically all you really need. But also, don’t just limit your self to voice acting online. If you’re really interested in this field, then go out to your local colleges and studios and study up on acting and take improv classes. Maybe in the future even get a voice coach and hone your ability. All of the greatest voice actors are all even better actors and constantly are taking classes and going to acting and voice coaches to keep up what they got. So don’t expect it to just be something that will happen right away. Trust me, I made the mistake of just going headfirst into this and now there are some audio files that world never hear because of it. Seriously, they’re awful.
But just like any art form, voice acting takes practice and perseverance. Just keep doing it and trust me you’ll get better. Just keep recording and you’ll find it get easier and easier.
Also, lastly, just talk. As much as you can. Just talk. Listen to your own voice, learn it, know it. That way you can better use it how you want. Since most impressions are pretty worhtless when it comes to the professional acting biz, knowing your own voice is the way to go.
Well, that’s all I got. I hope this helped. Now go out there and act!!
