”can it wait until tomorrow? we’re both pretty tired right now.” her voice comes out weak. he takes a seat beside her, the mattress springs creaking under the additional weight.

”i think it’s best if we discuss it now.” he said lightly, but knowingly. 

knowing that these unsaid things would pile up into resentment,

knowing that prolonging it would end up in never talking about it. 

that was all that happened to conversations lately, they just never happened.

she took a deep breath and met his eyes with a sad smile of her own.

”okay, shoot.” but she knew what he was going to say. his hand reached for hers, interfacing their fingers. 

they’d tried recreating their favorite date earlier that week, but there was much less laughter. more awkward smiles and dreadful understanding of what this had become. 

a beer and her vodka cranberry,

his unbuttoned henley and her doc martins,

a bar booth wasn’t supposed to be that quiet. 

their love hadn’t gone stagnant, it simply wasn’t enough to overcome all the changes that had occurred and people they had become.

“babe,” he paused, inhaling deeply. “i think…..this is the end.”

his red eyes shone with tears. hers streamed down her face immediately. 

his thumb reflexively reached out to wipe them away but stopped midway. 

her own fingers reached up to to swipe under her eyes, his arm dropped down to his side.
