How To Support An Employee Who Is Struggling With A Mental Health Issue
Talking about mental illness isnât easy, especially at work. But itâs essential, as a leader, that youâre prepared to have conversations, particularly with employees who are struggling. Here are several things you can try to make sure youâre a well-equipped mental health ally to an employee whom youâre concerned about.
â Prepare Yourself. Think about any assumptions or preconceptions you may have about mental health conditions and the people who deal with them â then, discard them. Educate yourself on the mental health resources your organization offers. And consider your own history with mental health, and whether you'd be willing to share your experience with others.
â Find A Good Time To Chat. Keep an eye out for signs that the employee is struggling. Watch for lack of concentration, missed deadlines, decreased communication, or repeated, unexplained absences. Try to pick a âgood dayâ when your colleague seems approachable or relaxed. (And remember, some people show no outward signs of struggle or work concerns, so you canât always assume that someone isn't struggling merely based on their appearance or work performance.)
â Start Gently. Talking about mental health should feel normal. Simply asking, âHow are you feeling today?â or âHow was your weekend?â or âHowâs that assignment going?â can create space for the discussion. Of course, donât force the conversation â follow the employeeâs lead. Strike an open, genuine, and empathic tone. A casual, non-confrontational approach can facilitate a more open dialogue.
â Reassure. Remind them of how they were able to overcome challenging tasks in the past, reassuring them that things will be OK, and making them feel valued and needed. Many people with mental illness fear being disliked, abandoned, or rejected once others learn of their issue. So continue to have regular conversations while gently checking in.

Chip Away At Your Long-Term Career Goals
Most of us would prefer to think long-term about our careers,  rather than just veering randomly from the opportunity to opportunity. But how can you be strategic if youâre not entirely sure where you ultimately want to end up? Try these four strategies:
1. Figure  Out What You Donât Want. For instance, you might decide you never want to work for a micromanaging boss again, or youâre done with your current industry, or you no longer want to work hands-on and only want to take on advisory roles. Those are useful pieces of data that can help you form a more realistic picture of what you do want.
2. Pick A âProvisional Hypothesis.â Itâs hard to think about narrowing your options permanently, so pick one direction as a  hypothesis for where you want your career to go. This should be an informed choice, and you can always change your mind later, but itâll help you to work strategically toward a plausible goal.
3. Make Progress  On The Basics. Double down on foundational, transferable skills and knowledge that will make you better, no matter what direction you ultimately decide to pursue.
4. Take Stock  Of Your Emotional And Mental Energy. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your long-term career success is to take a well-deserved break, whether itâs a more formal sabbatical or simply recognizing that itâs  OK to pause on ambitious new goals right now. Thereâs no need to beat yourself up for a smart choice.

Make AAPI Safety a Managerial Priority Because of an increase in racism, xenophobia, and hate crimes targeted at the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, many members donât feel safe coming to work. Supporting your AAPI colleagues and employees requires more than just words. Here are three steps you can take. - Make Personal Safety A Priority. Look at offering shuttles that pick up employees at certain locations, minimizing the time they have to spend on public transportation. Consider increasing security, including offering security escorts to walk employees to their cars in the parking lot. You might also provide a reimbursement benefit for a safety kit, personal alarms, and portable phone chargers, or self-defense classes. - Make Personal Safety A Priority. Many people donât know what to do if and when a member of the AAPI community is being targeted. Give allies the information and education they need to intervene, including training on how they can insert themselves indirectly and directly into violent and nonviolent situations. - Make Personal Safety A Priority. Deciding On A Job Offer When Youâre Still Interviewing Elsewhere
Therefore, you have gotten a job offer â but you are still waiting on another. You do not want to pass up the opportunity that you know is a sure thing. However, you also want to see how the hiring process plays out at the other company. What should you do? First, express excitement to the company that has made you an offer. Then ask for a week to make a final decision, and gauge the hiring managerâs reaction. If they seem chilly, ask them what a reasonable period would be â without providing more detail. You can even try to extend the timeline by asking to meet a few potential colleagues or to take a tour of the office. At the same time, contact the recruiter or hiring manager from the other company to reiterate your excitement for the job.
Let them know that you have an offer from another company. Mention that you would not want to lose the offer if you are not a viable candidate for the job, ask if you are truly in the running, and listen carefully to the energy in the response. If they say you are a viable candidate, there is great enthusiasm, and you are far along in the interview process, you can ask if there is anything else you can answer for them to make an offer. If it is early in the interview process, you can see if they can expedite the rest of the process to determine if you are the best candidate for the job. If they can speed things up, great! If they cannot, you will need to decide whether you want to take the risk of rejecting the offer you already have. #ZKhan #HR #Management #JobOffer #Candidate

The earlier you start, the better off you will be because education can be the key to success when it comes to money. A strong foundation of financial literacy can help support various life goals, such as saving for education or retirement, using debt responsibly, and running a business.
Basic steps to improve your personal finances include creating a budget, keeping track of expenses, being diligent about timely payments, being prudent about saving money, periodically checking your credit report, and investing for your future.

No One Wants To Work For A Passive-Aggressive Manager
Working for a passive-aggressive manager can be extremely frustrating and demoralizing. Maybe your boss passes you off to someone else when you approach them with a problem, continuously finds gentle ways to shut down your ideas without a thoughtful explanation, or even ignores you when you speak. How can you navigate this kind of tricky relationship?
- Build A Supportive Network. Because a passive-aggressive manager doesnât confront you directly, itâs easy to second-guess yourself and believe youâre inventing slights. People outside your organization will be able to offer you a fresh, unbiased perspective, emotional support, and sage advice on how to deal with your boss.
- Don't Stoop To Their Level. You donât want to earn a negative reputation with your other colleagues, so avoid gossiping. But itâs ok to reach out to others if youâre actively and constructively looking for solutions.
- Network Internally. Should you want to switch teams or departments at some point, itâs a good idea to make connections in other parts of the company.
- Know When It's Time To Leave. Once youâve exhausted all of your options, it might be time to look for greener pastures. Prioritize your well-being and career above all else.
