I'm sorry to bother you but I need to talk foor a bit. I LARP on a regular basis, and it's probably the only thing that's keeping me relatively sane, but on the way out there I have trouble breathing and it feels like I'm about to panic. I told my mother about it, and now she thinks that LARP is bad for me and wants me to stop. I feel like I need to keep LARPing to stay functioning in everyday life, and it's the best thing that happens in my month, but I don't want to bother my mother. -Zisle
Hello, Zisle. You are certainly not a bother, you are welcome to write to us about whatever you like. We are happy to hear from you.
I must finally admit that I am old, I'm afraid. I had to ask to find out what a "LARP" is. (My only comfort is that Sigrid didn't know, either. That's one less child to tease me, I suppose.) We didn't do anything so organized when I was a young boy in Laketown. I almost wish that we had--It sounds far more exciting than our childish games of pretend were back then. I certainly see why you find it so enjoyable.
It sounds like you may indeed be having an attack of panic, or anxiety, from what you described in your letter. They are not always easy to recognize, but feeling panic and your breath coming short are two indications one is happening. If you have not done so already, i think it would be helpful to you to practice ways to control these attacks when they come. I have found that my breathing and my emotions go hand and hand, and getting a handle on one will allow me to control the other. Simply being able to identify these attacks when they come allows you a measure of mental control over the situation as well.
It also sounds as though you do not yet know what causes these feelings. If they happen regularly while you are on your way to LARP, but LARPing is a wholly enjoyable activity to you, it may be worthwhile to work out the underlying cause. Perhaps you could keep a record of when these attacks happen, and write down the details, to see if there are any common links between them? It might also do you well to see a doctor. Sometimes they are caused by unwellness in the body. Whatever the cause, they are treatable.
In the meanwhile, Zisle, I think you should explain to your mother how much you enjoy the LARPing and that you wish to continue. If the experience is ultimately a positive one for you despite the attacks, I think you should attend (with caution). It may be reassuring to your mother to know that you are otherwise working on handling any anxiety that you may feel, and she can help you in an active way (taking you to be seen by a doctor, for example) rather than a passive one (keeping you home rather than LARPing). This allows you to go after the cause, not the symptom, so to speak.
Peace to you and kind regards,
Bard of Dale
