The Problem with ‘Absolute Boyfriend’: A K-Drama Rant
The best thing about Yeo Jin-Goo aside from his stunning good looks, is his ability to emote -- And that’s the main problem with ‘Absolute Boyfriend.’
Listen, this show isn’t the best. It’s got a LOT of plot holes and is a bit of a mess but I love Yeo Jin Goo so I’m watching anyways. First of all, the premise is a tad creepy: a dedicated love robot activated by a kiss. This means the leading lady could literally be anyone, which makes their relationship not super romantic and a bit weird. There’s no tension - he’s programmed to love her and just will so...meh? Give me a robot who bypasses his programming you guys! It makes me think we are supposed to root for Wang Joon, but they made him really unlikeable so I’m just confused.
BUT the biggest problem with ‘Absolute Boyfriend’ is Zero-Nine, a love robot designed to be completely dedicated and the perfect boyfriend to whomever owns him, played by Yeo Jin Goo. But Yeo Jin Goo is literally the least robotic robot I’ve ever seen. His conversations with the lead are nuanced and expressive, and even when he’s alone he emotes happiness, confusion, sadness and concern. He specializes in meaningful puppy love gazes; the polar opposite of a robot. He does surface robot-y things like fixing stuff and controlling electrical circuits but his personality is inherently human.
If they want us to believe he’s an AI, there should be some uncanny valley stuff written in where he responds oddly to certain things like our favorite robot Nam Shin III from ‘Are You Human too?’ (a flawed k-drama who got robots right!) I can ignore a few missteps, after all this is a silly rom com robot k-drama, but I’m baffled by the choice to make Zero-Nine basically a human call boy.
okay, i may be the only one that feels this way, but i want da da to end up with ma wang joon. i know he messed up and broke up with her without telling her the reason for the distance was because someone was threatening to hurt her. and he was in pain, same as her. i’m not condoning the shitty way he went about it, but he truly believed he was doing what was best to protect the woman he loves. he was about to propose on stage during a televised awards ceremony.
he didn’t start missing her because she was “dating” zero nine. he was hurt because she had “moved on” so quickly and he started to think that she wasn’t upset or missed him at all.
i LOVE zero nine. he’s a sweetie and i have no ill will towards his character. but as much as i want to want da da to end up with zero nine, i can’t bring myself to.
all i can think about is that he’s a robot programmed to be everything and more for someone. he’s made to be perfect. and she deserves to be treated with such kindness and love. but that’s just it. he’s perfect. it’s not REAL. he’s not a real person. (no shade on him i swear)
i feel like this show is (so far at least- i’m on episode 10) teaching our ma wang joon about what he lacked in his love for her and what he needs to do differently. it’s showing da da to embrace being taken care of and thought of by the person that chooses to love her.
and personally (again, probably just me), i want ma wang joon and da da to grow as people and eventually get to the point where they can be together.
my heart aches for them both and i want them to be happy. i just don’t think ma wang joon deserves to be thrown to the wolves.
that’s my take.
Bye. See you soon 💜
