When I first saw Zero I thought he was just a cool edgelord. Now I think he's one of the most self-sacrificing heroes in gaming and a prime example of a character being saved from flimsy writing (cough cough X6 and a bit X4) by actually doing stuff with his implied personality traits and character flaws/limitations. Though he still suffers from Megaman's pervasive issue of having lots of stuff about him only really talked about in external materials, getting his own series actually helped him and I actually liked how it was its own unique story rather than just delving into his past like the X games often did, even if that thread was never quite finished. The Zero games ultimately deal with Zero as a person in his purest state precisely due to his amnesia and being unchained from his past
